Resogun’s Dev: “Unlocking full power of PS3 CPU" was difficult; prefers "compute shaders over SPUs"

GearNuke: The PlayStation 3 was notorious for sporting a powerful cell processor paired with a weak GPU. This is opposite of what we are getting on PlayStation 4 with a stronger GPU and a weaker CPU. Housemarque's Engine Architect gives us his insight on this difference in power between the two consoles.

Games next year for PS4 are going to be insane. We're already off to a great start.

TheHybrid4247d ago (Edited 4247d ago )

Why is a guy making a side scrolling, 2-D game that could run on a PS2 talking about getting the most out of hardware? Resogun? Yea...that screams next gen...pass

ps- more games like killzone please

MadLad4247d ago

In the article it shows that his lowly side-scroller is actually very resource heavy what with every element of the environment being broken apart into its own separate element, viewed in real time.

PS4OUR4247d ago (Edited 4247d ago )

@TheHybrid:

Is that a joke? Please tell me posted a joke because if you were serious i'd be really worried for your mental health.

PinkFunk4247d ago

Weeeell, to be fair, I feel like this game doesn't necessarily show off its true beauty through compressed YouTube footage... Knowing that all those individual cubes are bits and pieces broken up in real time is something you can only really comprehend while playing the game on your hdtv in 1080p, IMO.

At first sight, knowing little about this game, it doesn't show off its true potential. So uh, like, don't question his mental health brah.

Ravenor4247d ago

" According to the developers, it is heavily utilizing the GPU compute capabilities of the PlayStation 4 hardware to generate thousands of dynamic physical cubes. "

200,000+ Cubes could not be rendered on the PS2, in fact that couldn't be done on the PS3 without seriously impacting performance. Maybe learn what Resogun is before spouting bullshite, it's not a 2-D game.

PinkFunk4247d ago

Damn, that's pretty insane! I did love Stardust. Looking forward to this like crazy.

Sometimes I feel like 2D shit is the absolute best way to show off new tech. PixelJunk Eden on PS3 for me was a hell of an experience. So crisp, clean, and beautiful. I lost myself in that.

PS4OUR4246d ago (Edited 4246d ago )

@Ravenor

Don't provide them with info on this game. They're trolling. A simple google search couldn've told them the game is heavily GPU compute intensive and would melt a PS2 and PS3.

strickers4246d ago

And the engine can run to 500000.

strickers4246d ago

You are not very bright. Resogun is running upto 200000 voxels and using GPU Compute. Cerby said it would be awhile before anyone used it.

It looks very fun, and visually fantastic.

CaulkSlap4247d ago

Yeah the Cell was sort of an interesting experiment that just didn't pan out. With GPU technology taking a different turn in multi-purpose compute processors there really wasn't a reason for the rest of the games industry to design around the Cell. Just made sense to go with PC industry standards this time around. Works out better for developers to have one standard across all major platforms.

blahblah1234247d ago (Edited 4247d ago )

You'd have to dig up something online with one of the Cell wizards like Vassily Filippov, but I think the parallel processing of the Cell was such a struggle because it depended largely on assembly-language. I don't know anybody who would prefer CPU assembly-language over shader programming on a GPU for a video game.

Housemarque Reveals It Has No Plans For Live Service Or Free-To-Play Title

Ilari Kuittinen and Gregory Louden of Returnal developer Housemarque have revealed during an interview with Eurogamer at the studio’s 30th anniversary event last week that it has no plans to develop live-service or free-to-play games, “as long as people are buying premium games.”

kpgs25d ago (Edited 25d ago )

Why would they change? That's not where their expertise is.

Redgrave25d ago (Edited 25d ago )

Didn't stop Sony after acquiring Bluepoint, taking them from renowned remaster and remake quality and sticking them on a GoW live service title that never even went anywhere.

I can't speak to what gives Housemarque the ability to be different, but let's be thankful that they are able to do so in wake of current Sony.

Cellblock1125d ago

Well whats different about Housemarque which Sony also owns that they can tell Sony what they will and wont do but the others couldn't?

derek25d ago

That GoW live service game was the dumbest idea ever. I thought they were remaking Bloodbourne or a Demons souls expansion (covering that broken arch stone). Sony was really panicked after that abk/Microsoft news hit. I hope it was a side project for Bluepoint and that there's another one in the pipeline. That GoW game apparently never got off the ground.

Eonjay25d ago (Edited 25d ago )

Blaming Sony for pursuing Live Service when the top 5 games every month by spend and engagement are live service games is illogical. Gamers are telling Sony where to invest so there is a real disconnect between what is said online and what people actually play. Who should Sony listen to? Clearly the logical decision is to listen to people actually playing games and whether we like it or not Sony would be in vioulation of it duty to its investors if it didn't try to pursue LS. People taking out their fustrations on Live Service games by attacking Sony and using it as the industry whipping boy does not fix the industry. You are just telling the rest of the industry that they can keep doing what they are doing because they aren't called Sony. All I hear people say is that they hate live service but every single month the top games are live service. You are all either lying or you don't know what you are talking about. Sony should pursue both SP and live service games.

Wonder who the rival buyer was 🤔

@raven: “ Wonder who the rival buyer was 🤔 “
.
One guess start with a micro and end in a box 🤣

thejigisup89d ago

Thought you were going to say it ends in enis

Michiel198990d ago

all so caught up in your little war that you forget Tencent would even be a possibility, how cute

pwnmaster300090d ago

So is Ms not a possibility?
If people say Ms does that bother you?

Michiel198989d ago

what of my answer implies that? there is a reason i used the word possibility and didn't say: "it was tencent"
but i guess nuance is not a console war veteran's strong point.

1Victor89d ago

@michael: “ all so caught up in your little war that you forget Tencent would even be a possibility, how cute”

Psychologically speaking the key word is RIVAL think about it and take out your I’m better than you glasses he is speaking as a Sony employee and we all know there’s little to no rivalry between Sony and and any other company besides Microsoft Xbox and at the time the latter was on a acquisition binge rage.

Kid the only war I got going on is against ignorance, next time think before you write otherwise you’ll end up an obscured character without any trust on your words.
Do not expect any response after this.

Michiel198989d ago

nah if it was a rival there would be mutual respect.
This is shameless slandering, double standard and no integrity all over an imaginary war for a company who doesn't know you or care about you so ofc im gonna call that bs out.

Talking like a sony employee is exactly what is so disturbing, you should only do that if you get actually paid for it, like an actual employee.

and don't call me kid when you can't even spell microsoft and instead turn it into microbox, psychologically speaking ofc

Fishy Fingers90d ago (Edited 90d ago )

It was probably more than likely Tencent or Embracer. They're the ones gobbling up smaller studios during that time.

Bathyj89d ago

This is the way you buy studios.
You work with them for years. New collaborate and have a mutually beneficial arrangement. And then you buy them. You don't simply gobble them up like.locusts just because your dad gave you $100b.

It's gow Sony got blue point. It's how Sony got insomniac.. I can see Arrowhead being the next acquisition if this trend continuous.

gold_drake89d ago (Edited 89d ago )

this is the difference between sony and ms

sony has long standing relationships with these companies before they talk purchasing

ms just waves the dollar signs and lets them die.

Michiel198989d ago

yeah lets just forget the bungie purchase and how quickly they bought and closed the concord studio

gold_drake89d ago (Edited 89d ago )

bungie has been in close relationship with sony for a long time and they remained independent, so u are proving my point.

and yeh, firewalk studios was closed due to concord. but i never said that ms does that. i said they leave them to die after purchasing.

reading is a learnable skill

Michiel198989d ago

sure they had a super tight knit relationship with sony, gimme a break. Then ms must have been basically bff's with bethesda and activision. Bungie remained independent? they've been hopping to get bought by or financially supported by companies like a cheap hooker and they keep messing up. They've barely been independent in their lifespan.

You say the difference is they build up relationships, i gave you 2 examples that they didn't but then the excuse train comes out, prime example of gross fanboyism. Condone one for what you condemn the other for.

StormSnooper89d ago

I can’t wait for their next game.
