Things I’ll remember about this generation (but wish I could forget)

PS4 Attitude: "This generation has undoubtedly been great for gaming, but with day 1 patches to download and online passes to activate, there have also been lots of hoops to jump through before you even get to play a game. Below are four innovations I’ll remember from this generation, but that I hope won’t follow us into the next… even though they probably will."

I got Hitman for free through PS+. I want to play it but it's 13GB! My little 150GB hard drive has no room.

13GB is way too big for current gen.

Man up and get a 1TB hdd dude!!

Kyosuke_Sanada3827d ago

I agree with this article wholeheartedly. Sequel-itis is another thing I hope doesn't make up the majority of games being released.

MasterCornholio3827d ago

For me it would be ( in no particular order)

1. Microsoft shift to casuals with Kinect
2. RROD scandal
3. PSN Hack
4. Microsoft's horrible E3 with the half naked jungle people and the poor audience wearing ponchos.
5. Ninja Theory destroying Dantes image
6. The trial against the hacker who hacked the PS3.
7. Capcom turning Resident Evil into an action fest.
8. Capcom exploiting DLC with fighting games for example.
9. Silent hill getting turned into an action fest.

That's about it for me.

Nexus 7 2013

Well said man I agree with you with all of them.

Summons753827d ago

Only one I kinda disagree with is the Cirque du Soleil, they are an amazing show no matter where they are at. However being at E3 for Kinect was a little strange...still a good show and the panchos held incorporate the audience giving it a visual flare.

Otherwise I agree, add Ylod to the RROD scandal

1. The downfall of my favourite franchises:
Resident Evil
Silent Hill
Final Fantasy

2. Online passes
3. Season Passes
4. Microtransactions
5. Japan deciding we don't like their games anymore so westernising them or not localising their games.
6. Sat watching an Installation screen for hours.
7. Metro Last Light...buy scavenger hunt "the way it was meant to be played" for $$$
8. Buying all of my PS1/PS2 games again because Sony decided against backwards compatibility.
9. The decline in survival horror games.
10. Horror games being turned into action games
11. EA, CAPCOM and Activision.
12. Skyrim on PS3
13. Metacritic score becoming the be all and end all.
14. Military shooters overload.
15. Same voice actors being used in most games, Troy Baker, Steve Blum, Nolan North.
16. Developers being shut down because of mismanagement and over spending.
17. The PS3 599 US dollars launch.
18. The Xbox One TV TV sports TV no consumer rights launch.
19. Overpriced digital games
20. People that buy overpriced digital games
21. Biased reviews and poor journalism.

An probably many more I can't think of right now :p

FanboysAreGimps3827d ago

One thing I will remember this generation is the rise of the angry nerd rage fanboys that developed on the internet, and I mean that on all sides regardless of system.

My 1st jaw drop moment I will always remember was seeing the graphics on Fight Night Round 3 on the Xbox..... I was gobsmacked

sprinterboy3827d ago

Leaving my ps3 in my living room when re plastering walls, didn't end nice for the blu Ray drive lol and disappointed with gta4 ( just my opinion) other than that it's been a great gen

strickers3827d ago

GTA 4 was the weakest of the series. 5 may be the best. Previously SA was my favourite. VC was just too flat, geographically.

Matt6663827d ago (Edited 3827d ago )

VC was great and still is great.

What, I thought this was dead after Shawn Layden left Sony. I would definitely pick this up if it's true. I have such great memories of playing the MediEvil games on PS1 and I played the PS4 remake. Such a great and underrated series.

Cacabunga9h ago(Edited 9h ago)

A rumored game at a rumored show.. we’ve seen it all

TiredGamer9h ago

Agreed. The first remake was stylistically beautiful and a very noticeable improvement over the original in every regard. And it was reasonably priced and sustainably developed (i.e. not some mega big budget game that was do or die for the developer).

Zeke6811h ago

Thanks for the spoilers... :(

RonnySins10h ago

Another day, another remake. Ugh!

SonyStyled10h ago

If you played the original print I can see your annoyance. I didn’t and probably a lot others the past 20 years.

Was it any good? Would you suggest playing the original print of 2, or suggest the remake? Just wondering because I didn’t play the originals as I had an n64 at the time

TiredGamer9h ago(Edited 9h ago)

I played the first remake and absolutely loved it. The quality of life and control improvements were very noticeable. I tried playing the PS1 original and gave up halfway through at the janky controls.

Expect the same for part 2. The PS1 version is janky as heck, but I would gobble up an improved remake day one.

The beauty of this kind of stuff is that I find myself enjoying more retro gaming today, so a relatively low budget classic remake (call it a single-A release) is exactly what is missing from first party releases in the modern age. I don’t want every game to be an unsustainable AAAA endeavor that is just overwhelming in every regard. Truly miss when game releases could be modest-sized surprises and still be commercially successful/viable.

Bring on more quality classic remakes!

DarXyde1h ago

I can see your frustration and mostly agree, but modern remakes of games lost eras ago are fine if you ask me.

I don't know how old you are, but I was a kid when the first Medievil came out. It's really for a new generation of gamers more than anything and the industry is at a point now where there is an insane number of current gamers who missed out on those classics.

If we're talking about remakes of The Last of Us or remasters of GTAV, I'm in agreement. Otherwise, the choice to remake games like Final Fantasy VII, Medievil, Parappa, etc. are fair to me. Even PS2 era games being remade would be welcome to me. Often, the tech updates make it worth it.

Knightofelemia10h ago

Such a good series I also wish Sony would dust off Wild Arms and Legend of Dargoon even the Legend series needs to see the light again.

Omegasyde9h ago

My bets on new Socom and/or Wolverine (since Deadpool 3 is dropping in the summer).

I think one after this state of play will be PS5 pro preorder

InUrFoxHole5h ago

SOCOM! SOCOM! SOCOM!
But please not like Socom 4
