Microsoft Executives don't Know Resolution of Third Party Xbox One Games; May as Well Stop Asking

Following a rumor stating that Call of Duty: Ghosts could run at 720p native resolution (upscaled) on Xbox One and at 1080p on PS4, fans immediately asked Microsoft's Director of Product Planning Albert Penello and Microsoft Game Studios President Phil Spencer if there was any truth to the info.

Both executives responded very clearly that they don't know. Penello actually did so very extensively, also explaining why he doesn't know, and that even if he knew he wouldn't say.

He also mentioned that, based on the assets available to him (which are very limited), he sees no difference between Xbox One and PS4 versions of the game.

" he sees no difference between Xbox One and PS4 versions of the game"

Well of course he is going to say that, he isn't going to go ahead and say the PS4 version is superior, is he? (Im not saying that either).

Lets just wait for the official word, I personally see no reason why both consoles can't run the game at 1080p 60fps, especially when you compare it to other games on both consoles that are running at higher res+fps and look better graphically.

Abriael1824d ago

Same, the whole rumor is very flimsy, as the author of it says. But it's funny that people believe that Penello and Spencer HAVE to know. It's the same with Yoshida, and when he's asked this kind of questions on third parties he never responds (rightfully) or he states that he doesn't know.

pedrof931824d ago

Either that or they don't want to confirm it.

Abriael1824d ago

@pedrof93: I think it's more likely that they don't know. Penello's explanation is sound. It's sensitive information about external companies. If external companies knew that that kind of info is dropped all around Microsoft, they would not give it at all.

Eonjay1824d ago (Edited 1824d ago )

So let me get this right. You cited my article because I "inferred" that Penello was responding to rumors. Then you submit your own article saying the exact same thing. They were responding to rumors! You don't see the hypocrisy here do you?

Abriael1824d ago (Edited 1824d ago )

@Eonjay: you didn't even notice that my article doesn't include your tweet at all.

He wasn't responding to the rumors in that tweet. This article is based on an entirely different statement(s), on an entirely different place, and a lot more extensive and specific.

So yeah, the report on yours was completely warranted (and in fact many others reported it), since it did not in any shape or form even mention the rumors in that tweet, let alone respond to them.

May as well read first, comment later.

majiebeast1824d ago (Edited 1824d ago )

Abriael so tell me how Adam Boyes knows so much about Destiny and ESO? While the head of Microsoft doesnt even know what resolution Titanfall is running at.

Yosp seems to know a whole lot about third party aswell and he is the equivelant of Spencer.

Abriael1824d ago (Edited 1824d ago )

@majiebeast: because Adam Boyes *IS* the head of Publisher & Developer Relations. Which means that he's the equivalent of Microsoft's third party team Penello is talking about. He knows because it's exactly his field to know.

The fact that he shared that info on those two specific games obviously means he's been authorized to do so by the relevant third party.

Mind you, Penello and Spencer aren't "the head of Microsoft". They're executives with very specific roles, that don't include third party relations.

You won't hear that kind of info from Shuhei Yoshida as well, for instance, unless it's on first party games.

edit above @Majiebeast: I follow Yoshida very closely, and I don't remember a single time in which he provided info on the native resolution of a third party game. Every time he talks about third party games, he does so without specifics and on things that can be seen with the naked eye, which this isn't.

edit below: there's no nitpicking. You can't put in the mouth of a relevant developer something he did not say. In that tweet, he said nothing about that rumor, no matter what we believe he was referring to. On the other hand article includes quotes that are in specific and explicit response to that rumor. If I had only that tweet to go with, I would not have bothered at all, and in fact I didn't until we were provided relevant info.

Eonjay1824d ago (Edited 1824d ago )

Don't assume that I didn't read your article.
I think you are being fatuous. Do you really believe that Penello had a sudden revaluation at 8:00PM last night after being repeatedly tweeted over and over again about Call of Duty. You are nit picking. I have nothing personal against you, in fact I am a fan of your submissions. I think we have both made our points so I will drop it.

FamilyGuy1824d ago

I don't think this rumor is true but if the rumor about X1 basically not being able to be 1080p on most games turns out to be true it'll be pretty hard to justify that extra $100 price tag to anyone that doesn't care about kinect. Even more so than it already is.

On topic: They've already said/claimed that they aren't privy to this information so is there really a point in asking?
How come no body goes to the source and directly asks the devs what resolution the game is going to be in natively? I know BF4 devs were asked and were elusive saying that they're still optimizing but other devs should be asked as well. If people actually care as much as they seem to.

Abriael1824d ago (Edited 1824d ago )

@FamilyGuy: I did of course. Asking the relevant publisher for a clarification is the first thing I do every time I see this kind of rumor. Whether we'll receive a relevant answer or not, that's a whole different pair of sleeves.

Army_of_Darkness1823d ago

If cod ghost on xbone is 720p, then what makes it any different from the 360 version??

MorePowerOfGreen1823d ago

Now Abriael can make an article claiming Sony Reps don't know the resolution of 3rd party games either ;)

This is a manufactured controversy again by Sony fanboys.

UltimateMaster1823d ago

The real next-gen consoles should be 1080p and nothing less.

Thehyph1824d ago

There should be clarification to this very quickly.

Even if Microsoft aren't privy to release this kind of information, then I believe the third parties themselves should.

I mean, this is $400-$500+ of people's money we're taking about.
It may not matter to everyone, but to some people, it does.

ThatCanadianGuy5141823d ago

This is cute.Abrial was all up in arms last night when someone else submitted a story about this rumor, and how blatantly flamebait it was, yet he we are today, Dualshockers on the front line, waving the flamebait flag and proud to associate himself with this "flimsy" rumor. lol

Blaze9291823d ago (Edited 1823d ago )

yes because when we buy games we all look on the back of the case to see if it supports 1080p native resolution and if not, we REFUSE to purchase and buy it.

let's stop counting pixels like it really matters to anyone besides tech enthusiast and fanboys.

BBBirdistheWord1823d ago (Edited 1823d ago )

Well the truth is that if the MS reps do know, then they are not telling, for whatever reasons.

If they don't know, then they can't tell us anything further because there is nothing they could say. MS has given 3rd party developers carte blanche to make their own decisions in terms of resolution vs image quality. This is a consistent message that MS has maintained all along.

It's all speculation really, for fanboys to get their fanboy rocks off. Funny watching people getting knotted up about it all.

4 more weeks and we'll know for sure.
Can't wait to end all the fanboy BS.

OrangePowerz1824d ago

I'm sure they have tools to show in what resolution a game runs before it gets upscalled.

Fishy Fingers1824d ago

Understand they won't know the ins and outs of every 3rd party game but as COD was the biggest game of this gen and Titanfall potentially the biggest hitter for Xbox one in its first year I'd of thought they're both IPs he might want to show interest in.

Either way, until it comes from the horses mouth it's all rumour and we know how many of them get thrown around with nothing to back it up.

NateCole1824d ago

Funny how now they dont know this stuff. Chances are the rumors are false but still a bit odd MS cant confrim it this late.

Smootherkuzz1824d ago

Xbox runa FORZA at 1080p which means the console can handle 1080p it even has Blue ray at 1080p Also 4k compatible. Its up to devs to release titles at the rez they choose. Always about the money.

TheFallenAngel1824d ago

Yea but racing cars don't have a lot of things running on the background like a shooter, platform. Hell I think gran turismo 6 is running 1080p on a 7 yr old system.

BBBirdistheWord1823d ago

excellent point.

Wii U also does 1080P

So now that 1080P has been debunked as the benchmark to be attained, can we find a more meaningful benchmark?
