It seems unique at least. Not really loving any of the next gen controllers from anyone tbh.Maybe when I get my hands on one of them that'll change.

ZodTheRipper4278d ago

The new Dualshock received nothing but praise until now, I for one am pretty excited for it. I'm waiting with my opinion about the Steam controller though - this prototype probably is not the same thing that I'll have in my hands when buying it.

PSN-JeRzYzFyNeSt4279d ago (Edited 4279d ago )

i am sorry but this controller looks retarded.

my opinion screw you N4G users who will disagree with me

Nitrowolf24279d ago

can't say I am to fond of it either, but until I get my ahnds on it I will hold judgment. It certainly is the opposite of what we are use to (Curves inward rather than outward)

Pintheshadows4278d ago

I think this may be a case of fixing something that wasn't broken rather than innovation sadly.

DigitalAnalog4278d ago (Edited 4278d ago )

@pintheshadows

You consider the current controller "fixed"? Your standards are so unbelievably low no wonder many are migrating to PC due to the significantly superior controls on shooters and playable genre's like RTS or simulators.

Valve is doing something that can actually bridge such a gap but likewise met with near-sighted criticism.

BISHOP-BRASIL4278d ago

@DigitalAnalog

Oh please, cut the PC elitist crap, we don't give a flyingg f*ck if keyboard and mouse are more precise and apparently neither does many other Steam users... Why would Valve even consider a controller if not? Gamepads can be precise enough while a lot more confortable and with everything readily accessible.

Seriouslly, if this is am improvement (I don't know and will wait 'till at least touching one before judging) I'm all for it, but don't pretend gamepads are broken or that people gotta bend over and shut up to PC ideas just because gamepads are inferior... The fact Valve is reaching for this very accessory proves they aren't neither broken or inferior.

Pintheshadows4278d ago

That is absolute nonsense Digital and I think it speaks volumes that you decide to attack my standards rather than form an argument as to why the Steam controller is in anyway promising. As it stands it is going to turn alot of people off, and the fact is, KB and M for PC is always the way.

And if you think this will actually work with RTS's (one of my favourite genre's) then you have already brought into the hype. I have serious doubts it will work at all. It is like saying it will work fine with Microsoft Flight simulator. You actually think devs will build an RTS around this or any controller? They won't as they are meant for KB and M. Controllers for RTS are just too limited and the thought of playing one with a controller makes me feel sick.

starchild4278d ago

First of all, saying that keyboard and mouse is "always the way" is complete nonsense. I game 90% of the time on PC and some games are better with KB&M and some are better with a gamepad.

Neither control method is ideal however. Gamepads lack a certain precision that you get with kb & m, but kb & m lacks any kind of feedback. Also, while the mouse is very good for aiming and looking, the WASD keys are far from ideal for controlling movement. It's either go, or don't go. There is no precision or control over the degree or speed of motion.

KB & M, while great for many games, isn't really ideal for a living room setting. Sure, it can be done, but it is more cumbersome than it should be and it definitely does turn some people off from PC gaming, or turns current PC gamers off from the idea of using their PCs in their living room on their big screen TVs.

Something doesn't have to be actually "broken" to be something that can still be improved upon. Yes, current control methods "work", but so did gamepads going back to the NES or before. They worked and people thought they were happy with them, but those people still adopted, and even came to prefer, the new innovations in game input that came along.

DigitalRaptor4278d ago (Edited 4278d ago )

@ Pintheshadows

I'll tell you why I think it's both innovative and it solves a problem that would exist.

Valve had to specifically design this controller for the purposes of being able to play practically every game on Steam. Now since a large chunk of games are not even controller compatible, this would not have been possible with just putting analogue sticks there. It would have been a case of hoping for the best, and hoping that developers add stick support.

The way this works, is that is emulates and tricks PC motion using the trackpads. So ... recap.

1) It solves the problem of sticks not being able to support most games on their console-style Steam Machines, which is the whole purpose of them breaking into this market.

2) It's innovative because it solves a problem that would have existed across a whole platform of games, and will most likely be as precise as the KB&M setup because of it.

--

I feel like i'm jumping on Valve's defense here without having experienced the controller myself, so just to clarify, this is what I think and not necessarily exactly how it may end up being. I'm basing it on what we know about it.

N84278d ago

Obviously I haven't used it. But it does look stupid. I almost don't even wanna try it lol

bumnut4278d ago

It does look a bit silly, but I will reserve judgement until I have tried one.

KonsoruMasuta4278d ago

I admit.

It's not the prettiest controller and it looks kind of uncomfortable but I'll wait until I see more of it and/or get my hands on it to make serious judgment.

Anyone remember trying this? No thanks. I'll stick to my tried and true thumbsticks.

KonsoruMasuta4278d ago

Oh god! The memories! They're coming back to a haunt me!

DoctorJones4278d ago

That looks nearly as bad as your avatar. That's one ugly looking controller.

Yo Mama4278d ago (Edited 4278d ago )

I agree, my avatar is pretty messed up. I AM McLovin!

DoctorJones4278d ago

At least the guy in the avatar makes a load of money from starring in Kick Ass, so there is that I suppose.

KonsoruMasuta4278d ago

If you think it looks bad try playing with it.

It was a good idea but it was poorly executed. It was not precise at all and it was a pain to use.

HammadTheBeast4278d ago

McLovin was in kick-ass? Isn't he from SuperBad.

Wait.

NO WAY!

REDMIST/MFER IS MCLOVIN!?!?

DoctorJones4278d ago

Hammads mind is blown, my work here is done.

CapsLocke4278d ago

What a retarded comparison.

DigitalRaptor4278d ago (Edited 4278d ago )

You do realise they're not just doing touch for the sake of it, or because it's hip or trendy?

It's because it's the only way they could have ensured 99% of games in the Steam catalogue could be playable using a controller., and it actually ensures increased precision over sticks.

89 million Steam account details allegedly leaked, but no one seems to know how

A LinkedIn post from Underdark AI made the discovery, stating that datasets are being sold for over $5,000 on a known black market forum.

Cockney32d ago

Biggest hack in gaming history if true

Christopher32d ago

No personal details, mostly account names, no passwords. Likely would need other account leaks to hope that someone reuses a password with a similar account name on another already leaked service. While a lot of users, the data is useless. Kind of notably by the $5k request for the data.

FinalFantasyFanatic30d ago

Plus, if you have 2FA enabled, then you were at zero risk anyway, from what I've read, Steam isn't even recommending password changes as it's apparently unnecessary.

VariantAEC26d ago

@Christopher
Where are you getting that from?
The linked article above says, "The seller claims this is a “fresh” leak and says it includes usernames, passwords, two-factor SMS logs, message contents, metadata, delivery status, and other sensitive details." Which sure sounds like they might have a lot of other information. If this leak is legitimate I better stop hearing people falsely say PSN is the worst secured digital storefront (even though that hasn't been true for a very long time with far larger data breaches since 2011 all over the world including the Equifax breach which was several times larger).

VariantAEC26d ago

@FinalFantasyFanatic
That seems true only if you use Steam Guard. If you opted for T2A via SMS the article suggests it's time to make the switch to Steam Guard and of course change your password.

Christopher26d ago (Edited 26d ago )

From the credit URL: https://x.com/MellowOnline1...

The article doesn't do a good job of going into the updated detail, they just mention part of it.

Just because the seller claims something, doesn't make it true. If it truly contained that data, it would be worth way more than just $5k. SMS systems don't rely on getting passwords for accounts they're sending an SMS to, just the username, phone number, and timestamp info.

You don't remember the psn hack I take it

Cockney30d ago

I do remember it being 77 million, thats why I made my comment

BlueDaBaDee31d ago

Update:
"Valve has now confirmed that “this was NOT a breach of Steam systems” and users do not need to change their passwords as a result. However, it continues to recommend that you set up the Steam Mobile authenticator for extra security."

Fishy Fingers31d ago

Shame. I liked the idea someone paid 5 grand just for my silly steam name.

DivineHand12531d ago

The government needs a taskforce with serious fundung that can opporate across borders to go after cyber criminals.

It is getting out of hand and it is the regular citizens of the world that suffer the consequences of these hacks and breaches.

My fear is that if left unchecked, state sponsored hackers from corrupt or governents under sections may use this as a method of raising revenue at the expense of everyone else.

Fishy Fingers31d ago

Bro teeing up a Mission Impossible movie.

ZeekQuattro31d ago

Not in this administration. If anything hes been dissolving existing task forces meant to protect consumers.

Amplitude31d ago (Edited 31d ago )

Why? They’d just use the funding to funnel hundred of millions of dollars into fake NGOs that then funnel it into democrat pockets while doing zero cyber criminal defence work.

Then if anybody tried to defund them it’d be a whole thing with the mainstream media claiming that there will be endless cyber attacks. NGOs would then fund protest groups to attack anybody that supports defunding the government’s cyber attack defence branch and then it would turn out it was also being used to stabilize or destabilize governments in other countries and overthrow elections to benefit America. Which is fine until they start using it on us again.

Let’s just not. Private companies who know what they’re doing (Valve) can deal with it

RIP USAID. God bless

Profchaos31d ago (Edited 31d ago )

It's not a may use this not we know state sponsored attacks do this already.

It's a global problem you couldn't have one government playing world police it would require joint collaboration with foreign governments and the problem is many laws have not kept pace with advancement of technology.

even then it's hard to say with certainty if an attack was a state sponsored attacks or a cybercriminal group operating outside of governments

staticall31d ago

@badz149
@pwnmaster3000
Have you guys actually read what was «leaked»? It was SMS messages from 3rd party provider (not from Steam itself) with one-time 2FA codes (that are active for 15 minutes). No Steam account details, access to an account or any of that jazz.

Let me quote official Steam response:
«The leak consisted of older text messages that included one-time codes that were only valid for 15-minute time frames and the phone numbers they were sent to. The leaked data did not associate the phone numbers with a Steam account, password information, payment information or other personal data. Old text messages cannot be used to breach the security of your Steam account, and whenever a code is used to change your Steam email or password using SMS, you will receive a confirmation via email and/or Steam secure messages.»
Source: https://store.steampowered....

The only bad thing about this is the phone numbers. But while that sucks, attacker doesn't know which Steam account this phone number belongs to. IMO, the only thing people should be rioting about is how unprotected the SMS are and the 3rd party service that was used by Steam. I'm all for punishing people who screwed up and/or lacked the security. But this is not it.

FinalFantasyFanatic30d ago

Why riot? They have nothing of value, can't even steal an account with the details they have, they would have to attempt a brute force attack, you can already do that with a Steam user's account name (or any account on any site) if you really wanted to spend the time and processing power to do it.
