King of Fighters XIII PC improves online play, doesn’t improve casual racism, sexism | Penny Arcade

Penny Arcade: "Fighting games have enjoyed and suffered from many different reputations over the past twenty years, and The King of Fighters XIII is all of those reputations. Good and bad at the same time. Wrapped up into one single game.

It is a game that is at once deeply fun, engaging, complex, and beautiful. Yet at the same time all of that is balanced out by a worrisome amount of casual sexism and cringe-inducing racial imagery."

Are Fighting Games Dead?

Our Staff Writer wrote: "Fighting games have been around since the 70s and later popularized by Street Fighter 2 in the early 90s. With various companies giving their own take in the genre, Fighting Games would bring a community of passionate players from around the globe to compete in tournaments, friendly bouts and even grudge matches. But fighting games as of late has become more of a niche genre, not attracting as many upcoming players into the ring as before and with an aging fanbase will fighting games die out in the near future?"

"With the upcoming release of Street Fighter 5 and Mortal Kombat X the scene is more alive than ever and has no sign of ever dying down."

Don't forget about Tekken 7 (Console release) and KI Season 2.

I wonder when will we see a new KoF or Fatal Fury...

Loadedklip3530d ago

Hopefully next time they come out of the gate with a GOOD NETCODE.

Is that really too much to ask?

PurpHerbison3530d ago

KOF98&02 over GGPO is fine. Also KOF13 Steam edition is fine as well. Hell... I was even playing KOF13 on PS3 2 days ago and got some decent connections but Steam edition netcode is much better.

voodoochild3463530d ago

No. No it's not too much too ask. It's also not too much to to ask for 98um and 2002um on steam with good netcode for the 20th anniversary.

Inception3530d ago

I thought KoF XIII had a decent netcode

SNK announced that there is a new 3D KOF game in development.

Man where is capcom vs snk 3 ?

Hoffmann3530d ago

Most likely never..except its made by fans just like this art collaboration =/

Loadedklip3530d ago

I would love a Capcom vs SNK 3 ... IF Capcom decides to not be biased and nerf the hell out of every single SNK character and mode while buffing all of theirs.

A groove rolls????
level 2 cancels in C groove?

No meter build in power up mode on N groove?

Awful priority, recovery on multiple formerly great moves from KoF while Capcom characters gained juggles, priority and increased hitboxes to things they could never do in their own games.

Capcom vs SNK 2 was basically Capcom vs Capcom 2.
A great game ... if you play as Capcom characters.

voodoochild3463530d ago

There were plenty of very good snk characters as well. People just didn't use them much outside of Japan.

Loadedklip3530d ago (Edited 3530d ago )

@ voodoo child. Name any team made up of only SNK characters that even came close to making anytype of noise in Japan as a legit threat to win a major.

SNK Characters were at best ... mid tiers.

voodoochild3463530d ago (Edited 3530d ago )

@loadedklip
I'm not going to go through the trouble of looking up names and tournament results. Off the top of my head k-geese, a-hibiki, n-Iori are all high or top tier depending on where you are. K-rock is definitely high tier at least regardless. N-groove vice mid tier but has very good normals and anti-airs. K-mai is very solid if a bit of a turtle. Yamazaki is just very good but severely under used.

Long story short, yes the Capcom characters stronger for the most part but with roll canceling and a bit more work most the SNK cast is tournament viable. I'll put k-geese, n-Iori, a-hibiki and k-rock against any Capcom team and feel no disadvantage. Unless your favorite characters are king, Dan, or the like you have no excuses for not making it work.

PurpHerbison3530d ago

I say this all the time but I do not want a CvS3. Way too risky after SFxT. You can only hope Capcom learned from their mistakes. Instead though... a CvS2 HD Remake would be right up my alley.

Loadedklip3530d ago

If they rebalance the cast sure.

Krimmson3530d ago

Congrats, SNK. Here's hoping the next 20 years are healthy for both you guys and King of Fighters.

the most challenging, competitive yet balanced fighting game ive played in my whole life.. specially 98, and 2k2
