More Western RPGs Are Being Localized, But Japanese Gamers Are Unaware Of Them

Spike Chunsoft is in a unique position to comment on the state of Western RPGs in Japan. Aside from developing games like Danganronpa, they also localize Western games like Saints Row IV, Kingdoms of Amalur: Reckoning and Dragon Age.

Here’s what Satoru Honma, International Business Development Producer, Spike Chunsoft, had to say about bringing The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt to Japan and the state of the Western RPG localization market.

Same goes with some Japanese games in the West to be honest, but maybe it's a lot worse in the East.

It is worse in the east.

There is a bigger market for JRPGs in the west than there is for WRPGs in the east.

The east is fully aware of the popular titles and they play them in English. Japan alone is different though.

I think it is too. The problem is the only place (that I know of) where I can find what is releasing week to week is Joystiq. That is where I discover fun little titles no one has mentioned.

Japan really isn't missing out on much, their have only been a handful of western rpgs that have been worthwhile this gen. The west however has to miss out on good stuff all the time (FF O, Phantasy Star Nova)
