GameSpy writes: "With no small amounts of wonder and trepidation, we saw the new Sonic the Hedgehog game at Nintendo's recent media summit. Sonic Chronicles: The Dark Brotherhood is an RPG from BioWare, which had us excited, but it has been a long time since Sonic's days of glory. But while we didn't spend enough time with TDB to reach any final conclusion, our early impressions of its presentation, gameplay, and BioWare "style" are all positive.
The gameplay rotates around an overhead-view world map. Our introductory level was a reimagining of the traditional Sonic starter area, the Green Hill Zone. Sonic and up to three teammates move along the bottom screen, guided by your stylus, with various icons representing special actions. One might indicate that Knuckles can punch an object to splinters, another might indicate that only a high-speed loop will get you by. Some areas will only be reachable with different party members, rewarding returning to prior areas."
Spiffy:
-Beautiful hand-drawn graphics
-Classic turn-based combat
-Innovative combat twists
-World map exploration
Iffy:
-No real way to predict how the game will turn out
Despite the fame and popularity of both the studio and the IP in question, not everyone knows that Bioware developed a Sonic RPG prior to them being acquired by EA, Sonic Chronicles for the Nintendo DS, and it was recently detailed in a DidYouKnowGaming video that both Bioware and SEGA were down for a sequel, but it was ultimately canceled for a surprising reason: SEGA was sued for copyright infringement
to be fair tho, the rpg for the DS was a mess.
touchscreen-only was not a good way to make a game like this.
I wish Sega got together with Square and made a Sonic RPG for the Genesis I would have played that.
Just because the first one sucked, doesn't mean Sega should abandon the idea of a Sonic RPG.
