Microsoft acquisitions: Its biggest hits and misses

Known for churning out some of gaming's most beloved hits -- Battletoads, Goldeneye 007, and Donkey Kong Country to name a few -- UK game developer Rare was a somewhat puzzling purchase by Microsoft, which at the time had just made the risky foray into console gaming with the original Xbox the year prior.

It's their best acquisition anyway.
That and Skype.

I don't care if it has turned a profitable game. They ruined the legacy of rare as a company that makes good games. Kinect sports is not a good notch on rare's belt. They are incapable of even making real games anymore, seeing as one of their most popular franchises was handed off to a 3rd party developer.

@yellow...i get what you are trying to say but....you can't ruin a legacy. That is why its a legacy. it exists long after the originator is gone and that which made it a legacy lives on as well.

Now, what i think you meant to say is MS tarnished the name of Rare which is true to some extent.

Just like the legacy of Square will live on even though the people that built Square up have since moved on. Square is a shell of its former self that has relied on the brand recognition of Final Fantasy for a long time.

it is still Square even if in name. Just as Rare is still Rare even if in name. When Ms acquired them, they had some good titles that came out for the original xbox. But the popularity of the xbox was nothing like the popularity of a nintendo platform that made Rare such a success. So in turn, Rare being acquired was going to result in a major change of acceptance for their games no matter what.

Some people tend to base their choices on experience. those who would shun a Rare game like Grabbed by the Ghoulies (not half bad by the way) do so because they dont like that MS bought Rare and out of spite will shun their projects from that moment on.

Sad really as even when people leave a company that has such a legacy, the new people coming in are just trying to fill that gap and live up to the legacy. In some ways they do but will consumers/gamers put aside their personal feelings and actually give these newcomers a chance? Some did but many others didnt.

Its the traditionalist mentality and it shows with the new Killer instinct game coming out. A nintendo and Rare collaboration that became a cult classic but many KI traditionalists are saying they dont like it because 1) its not Rare, 2) its only on XB1, 3) it looks too much like SF4, 4) MS is the main company behind the whole project.

I say to them, if you like fighting games and you like KI then give it a chance. Nothing stays the same especially when something has been gone for such a long time and is trying to make a comeback. Things change and good/bad....deserve a chance to be tried out.

Oh please let's not go for Rare. Rare didn't lose because there weren't popularity. It was because the games were bad. And the rest was just no triple AAA games. It's not rare fault. Microsoft just didn't want them to make superior games like they did for Nintendo, instead it just Kinect and some stuffs to do with kids crap. Trust me Rare still had little magic, even that wasn't approved by Microsoft!

They are sitting on so many IPs right now. I'd love to have some type of Battletoads game again.

rare was a hit, but they don't use them or let them make games that they were known for so unless they let them make games for the xbox one like banjo 3, a new perfect dark, conker 2, or even kameo 2 then they are a miss and died a slow death.
