Xbox exec: ‘We have a more complete value proposition than our competitors’

If you’re a gamer, it’s hard not to be really freakin’ excited for this November when two new consoles — the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One — finally hit store shelves.

But which one will you snag? Trying to save a few bucks with the $399 PS4? Love Halo so much that you’re dedicated to the Xbox? Or will you pass and keep on playing the Wii U while staying true to your Nintendo roots?

A $100 is not a few bucks. There is a reason why the PS4 is selling millions of pre orders. We are in the 4th Qtr of the game here. The consoles come out in 2 months. We seen a lot of flip flops, copy type marketing and Exec quit/fired/replaced over there at MS. They should fix themselves before worrying about Sony. Whom are in full command at this stage of the game.

Btw, I think people who love XBox are not all going to jump ship. More so now that MS has gone back on all their restrictions. We see the X1 pre-orders in games starting to go up (COD). So their ship is not sunk. It was just drifting for a long time.

zeal0us2263d ago

It would be extremely hard to justify a system that $100 more that hides majority of its features behind a paywall.

Mehdi and the rest of the MS exec will have a hard time on their hands trying prove that their system is worth choosing over their competitor's system.

Agent-862263d ago (Edited 2263d ago )

Thank you for pointing this out. The price difference is much more than $100 since just about every feature of Xbox One requires a Gold subscription. Basically, if you don't get Gold, all you have is a console that will play SP games and BR movies. Meanwhile, the only thing Sony has behind the PS+ paywall is online gaming and free games. You can do just about everything else that MS advertises but without paying a yearly subscription.

I can see some real problems once the casual gaming audience realizes this. They buy an Xbox One because of all these promises of what it can do, then plug it in and find out that it won't do any of those things without paying MS an additional $60 a year. Say the lifespan is 7 years, that's an additional $420 on top of the $100 price difference. Casual gamers and mom/dads who buy this thing for the "all in one entertainment device" are going to be in for quite a bit of sticker shock.

I said it before and saying it again
''MS is doing greater job selling the PS4 then SONY itself''

4Sh0w2263d ago

I think so but for the record me and my kids liked using Kinect on 360, it had its problems but it was still enjoyable experience for a change of pace between traditional gaming. I think my excitement comes from anticipation of seeing how they can improve on kinect to add to all types of gaming experiences.

3-4-52263d ago

The xbox die hards just like the sony ones, would pay $700 for their console of choice.

Some people just don't care, they want what they want, even if they have to pay more.

Never been a sony gamer but pretty sure that is about to change.

Don't see myself picking up an XB1 any time soon.

Have my 360, 3DS, PSP, & PC for now.

Prob get Wii U, PS4 in 2014.

I do really like Spark & Forza though.

J-R2263d ago

A $100 difference would not sway my decision on a console I will be using for the next 6+ years. However I'm sure there are a lot of people out there who's decision will be made because of that price difference.

If the PS4 was $100 more then the XB1 my decision would still be the PS4 just because the PS3 was able to provide me with a catalog of exclusives that I preferred over what the 360 offered.

JokesOnYou2263d ago

J-R well said, I feel the same way about X1. Yes for us, early adopters price is of little concern but no doubt for many its the most important factor, but I do think longterm its going to be more of a value proposition because there are many more expensive products that sell better than a cheaper competitor simply because consumers do often gravitate to products they see value in or popularity...of course that value has to be proven, so we'll see.

I hate kinnect. I hate motion gaming in general. The only reason Xbox is more expensive is because of this useless peripheral i already have from 360. Sure they claim its going to be better and it will change the game but they made the same claims for original kinnect and its still a piece of shit. All these gimmicks aren't necessary. I honestly just want a console that allows me to play excellent games. A good 90% of motion games are crap at their core foundations. Why would i want to pay more to play crap games?

When microsoft releases a version without kinnect hopefully before titanfall comes out i will be the first to get that shit. Until then no thanks. I don't give a damn about voice commands siri already made me hate voice command features i would much rather use my very reliable buttons which works 100% of the time.

UnHoly_One2262d ago

If anyone had any doubts about the childishness of the Sony fanboys on this site, look above at the two consecutive posts by J-R and JokesOnYou.

Both essentially say "to me price doesn't matter, I want my console of choice".

The difference is that one of them is Pro PS4 and one is Pro XB1.

As of right now, the pro PS4 post has 28 agrees and 0 disagrees, because it was a nice fair non-fanboy statement, and even the Xbox fans approve of what he said.

JokesOnYou, however, with his pro XB1 post, has 7 agrees and 18 disagrees. Which means all the Sony trolls are just hitting disagree because he likes the Xbox.

It's sad and pathetic, and I'm sure I'll get downvoted all the way to hell for this post, but it needed to be pointed out.

Now, on the topic of the article, I'm definitely getting both consoles at launch. But at this point I don't see anything on the PS4 that I want to play until inFAMOUS comes out.

I've never cared for Killzone, Knack doesn't appeal to me, etc... All the multiplatform titles I play will be on Xbox, just because I like the controller better, and I like Xbox LIVE better than PSN.

It's going to be a repeat of last gen for me. I'll play games on PS4 that I can't get anywhere else, and that's it. Everything else will be on XB1.

Much like his quote in the article, I believe that Xbox offers a better package. More features, better online service, better games. That's just my opinion of course.

The_Con-Sept2262d ago

@ unholy one: what is sad is your interest in the subject. Instead of compassion you garner hatred. What you don't understand is that PlayStation fans have endured defeat all last gen. We feared through the defeat. But it looks like the Xbox fanboys have let their fear control them. PlayStation 4 is almost here and yet fanboys and key pr reps alike have done nothing but complain about "unfairness." Guess what? This is a pro PS4 comment that will get more disagrees than agrees simply because it targets the weakling xbot fanbase. Watch.

UnHoly_One2262d ago

See this is what I don't get about the whole console wars argument. I don't "fear" anything, and no matter what happens, I won't "suffer defeat".

I don't care which console sells more. I'm buying them both. I'll use my Xbox 100 times more, but I couldn't give two craps about sales figures.

Here is how I look at it. Xbox One is in no way going to fail so bad that MS decides to just quit. Even if they are outsold 5 to 1, all that is going to do is have them try harder to make up for it.

Maybe we'll start seeing new features and better deals to get people on their side, or maybe next gen they will release a better console to try harder to make up lost ground.

I just don't see any option where I as a gamer can "suffer defeat" in this scenario. I'm not a stockholder at MS, I don't have a personal stake in this fight.

There are two competing products, I like both of them enough to buy them, end of story. Just because I use one more than the other doesn't mean I would gloat over a victory, or cry over a defeat.

Honestly, if sales numbers weren't plastered all over game sites, I wouldn't know who was "winning", because I would never go looking for them myself.

No real "Gamer" has "suffered defeat" since the days of the Atari 2600.

Just my 2 cents.

dlocsta2262d ago

I love Sony fanboys because you are so poorly educated. Let me give you a quick rundown on how I get Xbox Live for free. I use Bing as my search engine. I get points for using Bing. I use my Bing points to get free monthly cards for Xbox live. I pay nothing and play all MS games online for free because of services MS provides to me. Can you say anything like that about PS+? I am not saying it is not a good service, I think its great, but stop hating just to hate. If you don't like the comp, cool, that's your opinion. Just don't be an ass and think everyone or anyone for that matter gives a damn about YOUR opinion. Haha. Just funny!

The_Con-Sept2262d ago (Edited 2262d ago )

@ unholy one: I referred to the xbot fanbase in general. What the same "crap" spewed from them about the PS3 is basically the same bs that we are now spewing on the new Microsoft console. And when these fanboys get a taste of their own medicine...... They complain. It really shines the light on who are the biggest cry babies in the console wars.

@ the bing user: I have a PlayStation credit card that generates points based on my PlayStation network purchases which translates to 100x points per dollar spent towards said purchases. Because I buy so many indie games and even major digital titles online now I get more than just ps+ for free. I also get peripherals for free.

BlueBlood172262d ago

Have you held both of the new controllers?

Have you tried out the new Online Networks on both?

The reason the clown got so many downvotes is because trolls, even when taking a break, get downvoted anyway.

No one cares which system you are getting, just don't spout utter nonsense.

UnHoly_One2262d ago

BlueBlood, no I haven't tried the new controllers or the new online service.

The controllers I don't need to hold to know which one I will like better because Sony is still putting the left stick in the wrong place. So that's a no brainer for me.

As for the online service, I'm kind of going on two different things, there. One being the fact that XBL blows PSN out of the water right now, so I'm just assuming it will stay in the lead.

The other thing being that all of my friends are XBL players and plan to stay that way, so buying multiplatform games on PS would just be intentionally taking away the option to play with my friends.

KingMe422262d ago

Around half of those features are US only and a few select countries. If your American great for you! Xbone might be better. For the rest of the world? Not so much.

nukeitall2262d ago

You can cry and moan about that $100 all you want, but when that online game you are playing on P2P is lagging out, you wished you had dedicated servers like the Xbox One does.

That is 300,000 servers. MS ranks in the top 3 for number of servers in the world at over a million.

“I claim there really are almost no companies in the world, just a handful, that are really investing in scaled public cloud infrastructure,” said Ballmer (see transcript ). “We have something over a million servers in our data center infrastructure. Google is bigger than we are. Amazon is a little bit smaller. You get Yahoo! and Facebook, and then everybody else is 100,000 units probably or less. So the number of companies that really understand the network topology, the data center construction, the server requirements to build this public cloud infrastructure is very, very small.”

Agreed. The main sticking point now for many people is Kinect. Most people didn't want a camera on 360 or PS3, but now One is more expensive because the camera is included. We'll see how much that impacts sales.

denawayne2263d ago

I've said it before and I'll say it again. If you're not a diehard for either company, yes, the PS4 will look attractive because of the price but that will be the only reason (for a casual). It won't be because of the hardware performance (the only real thing the PS4 has going for it. The Xbox One will sell systems to the casual (the majority of consumers) by word of mouth. I know you diehards don't care too much for Kinect, Skype, snapping, and other non hardcore gaming features but when a casual walks into a friend's house and experiences those things, it's game on for MS. I'm excited for those casual features as well as DD where you can switch between games without getting up to change the disc.

You can disagree with me all you want but if you're any way into technology, you have to admit the Xbox One has some cool stuff that it can do. Ok, now here comes the "PS4 can do everything the Xbox One can do". To that I say No, No it can't.

MysticStrummer2263d ago

@denawayne - Casuals won't be buying at $499, and yes... the PS Eye can do most of what Kinect can do.

The thing is, as I know you read in my comment but completely ignored in your answer, most people didn't want a camera on either console this generation. Are they going to pay more for something they don't want?

SilentGuard2263d ago

I love/loved Xbox since 2001, but MS and the One has pushed me away, even with it's reversals. A $350 sku without Kinect might bring me back, but MS better hurry before I fall into Sony's arms.

denawayne2263d ago

I never said that anyone has wanted or is going to want a camera. All I am saying is that the Xbox One experience is what is going to sell the Xbox One. I know it's hard to believe, especially for hardcore gamers, which this site is the majority of. I'm trying to say that if some casual family member or friend walks into a house and experiences the PS4, they'll mostly experience games and not much else. Not because the PS4 doesn't do other things. It's just not a seamless experience going through all the features. But if they walk into a house with Xbox One, the first thing that will impress is when the owner turns everything on by voice. Then the owner tunes into TV only to snap the internet on the side (all by voice). Then they turn on a video game for a while only to snap the football game on side to see what the score is. Then a Skype call comes in from a friend so they snap to that (all while the video game is still on, probably paused for Skype). Then the owner is done with Skype and decides to play a different game. He doesn't need to get up to change the disc. He switches to a 2 player game like football. He asks his brother to come in and play. The brother walks in and Kinect recognizes him and signs him in before he grabs a controller.

Think the casual guest is impressed yet? If you say no and hit disagree, you're either not into cool tech or are so against MS that you won't admit it's cool no matter what.

I can care less if nobody else wants this experience. I know I do and that's all that matters.

cfir2263d ago

I think since they removed the digital drm you still need to swap the disk to pay on xb1. Unless it's a digital download of course.

BallsEye2263d ago

To everyone thinking kinect is an unneeded gimmick you should see what guys at project spark did with it. You can mo-cap characters there using kinect. Record your own full body animations, facial expressions and voice (and then change the voice for exmaple on troll voice), put it into the game and share it. Now that is awesome. Check out their youtube channel.

moparful992262d ago

@Denawayne Did you not watch Sony's Gamescom presentation? If you had you would have known that the launching a game without putting a disc in was fully demonstrated on stage.. it was flawless, seamless, and loaded in seconds... Secondly Sony confirmed facial recognition/profile sign in and voice controls with the PS Eye.. There is literally almost nothing ONE can do that PS4 cannot..

denawayne2262d ago

@moparful99 - Snapping, Skype, Cloud, Voice and facial recognition out of the box?

Look, I'm talking about tech that the Xbox One will do seamlessly from the moment you set it up. I have no doubt the PS4 will be awesome and do some of the stuff Xbox One will do. I just think most people who get the PS4 will mostly play games on it and ignore the other features because they're not built in with ease of access in mind. Hell, I ignore most features on my 360 because of that reason.

GoldenBoy2262d ago

Agreed....price will be a huge difference. The Value Proposition argument did not work for Sony last gen and it won't work for Microsoft this gen.

Kingnichendrix2262d ago

Skype is on the psp, vita and will be on the ps4

moparful992262d ago (Edited 2262d ago )

@Denawayne Skype? check. Cloud? check. Voice and facial recognition? check. If you honestly want me and others to believe the average Joe schmo is going to go gaga over snapping and rush out to buy an X1 for $100 more then you are kidding yourself.. Kinect won't cause a stampede either, the original Kinect was nothing like it was advertised to be (yes I have one and I never use it, big waste of money)Kinect 2.0 so far only looks marginally better.

It's obvious that you are just simply awestruck by the features of the One but someone like me that has been gaming for 25 years all of that fluff is silly, if it's not something that dramatically increases my enjoyment of games then its superfluous to me and unnecessary..

I loved the PS3 because of Blu-ray and Sony's first party. PS4 looks to fix the issues that the PS3 had so that's what I am getting.. We can sit here and debate the features all day but you and I both know that what sells consoles is games and Sony's first party is better than Microsoft's..

Speaking of things it will do out of the box, since you are a xbox fan please don't tell me you were an early adopter of the 360 because it lacked a lot of the features that are now standard out of the box like built in wifi, Hdmi port, hd dvd or blu ray, full 7.1 dolby surround, upgradeable hard drives(still don't have) etc.. But let me guess it was all about the games huh?

denawayne2259d ago

@moparful99 - All the features you claim PS4 can do ,"check", not one of them is a part of the PS4 out of the box and I doubt they will be as seamless as Xbox One in doing them. How come most cell phones nowadays can do the same things but some sell better than others? It usually comes down to ease of use.

Millions? How the hell did that become plural?

anyways... I don't see how $100 or a gold sub is making any real difference... Its one game over 8-10 years...

And sure.. People are buying a brand new console to watch Netflix or DVR their single player game to share with.... Oh ya.. Nobody!

Lol... Its a weak argument... Funny how the pay wall never came up until sony started charging for multiplayer.. Then everyone had to find sone excuse why its ok for them to pay a sub.. But not us, were being screwed..

Kids are like a broke record around here.. Just copy and paste the same tired complaints

rainslacker2263d ago

$100 isn't going to make a difference to the diehard fan. To the moderate gamer that just wants to play games, it might, but they will likely go where their friends go, and it's safe to assume that most people would prefer to pay less if they can. This is particularly true for popular multi-plat players.

I also don't believe the gold sub is going to make a difference, at least not for anyone that currently owns a 360.

And no, people don't buy these devices to watch Netflix or DVR their games, but if they are interested in those features, then having them behind a pay wall that some may not want to pay can deter them from purchasing it when the competition offers the same thing without the pay wall.

This article is about "value proposition", and it's pretty easy to see that the less expensive console, that does not have a recurring fee to get at all of the systems value, is a better value proposition for those interested in those things.

As a all-in-one device, the Xbox falls short for the sole reason of everything is behind a pay wall. The all-in-one mantra is there to mostly attract the casual to moderate gamer who wants convenience. However, when that convenience is more expensive, many people will take the cheaper option, particularly if they are comparable.

Also, dunno where you've been these past few years, but the whole "MS puts all it's features behind a paywall" argument has been going on here for quite some time. It's really the same argument as used before, it's just modified now to include Sony, saying that Sony has value behind it's subscription, whereas MS value is less due to those features being free everywhere else...including sub $100 blu-ray players.

n4rc2263d ago (Edited 2263d ago )

Bub for intelligent... I don't agree with all of it but well said..

As I have said.. Gold is not an issue now, and it becomes even less of an issue next gen... Ps+ will be the same..

But most features go hand in hand with online gaming i believe.. You have no use for them if you dont play online... And cant imagine offline gamers running out to buy a next gen system anyways..

Id hate to sound like a prick... But its like $5 a month! Lol.. Ive never even questioned it.. I understand what Live must cost to operate and for what we get, its one hell of a deal imo.. And its gotten 10x better and staying the same price (for now to be fair here)

And I can't say about what has gone on here.. I'm new to this site.. But I've never heard it elsewhere to be honest.. It was always about paying for online and ps3 owners didn't..

mr.selfdestruct2262d ago (Edited 2262d ago )

@ n4rc

The reason people dont complain about Sony subscription is its a better value 100%. You're not simply paying for the privlidge of multiplayer you also get a kicking catalog of FREE GAMES!!!. MiicoSoft tries to fool you that is worth it with Facebook,Netflix,Party Chat, but in the end your paying to play your games online. So no I'm not mad because the value is there. Ohh and BTW all that other stuff is still usuable on PS4 even if your not a Plus member. So I choose to support a company that is pro games not pro lemme steal your monies.

What is with the sad victim nonsense. Why do the xbox only crowd have to always play the Poor us card. Its getting old. Instead of putting anything helpful into a conversation you all just complain about being unfairly outnumbered and poor me nonsense. Man its so pathetic and annoying.

You can't just accept that one console has a bigger fan base as of right now and worldwide. It like xbox only people are being repressed and banned but its just not true. Stop playing the victim nonsense grow a pair and man up. Speak your mind about the topics at hand and not about being boooohooooohoooo outnumbered and whawhawhawha.

The thing i find funny is how history has a way of repeating itself and the tables turned this time and the pro xbox fans are all on board like RYSE QTE. This site was never ending Heavy rain hate for QTE's and GOW. Xbox fans touted indie games but now that they arn't as big on xbox they are now stupid(not as cool) the F2P games are bad now.

Anyways i will own both i don't think i agree with xbox providing more value becasue the value i see is less gamer related and im a full gamer. That said xbox will be in my house just like every system is for the last 20+ yrs and i will play it and enjoy it. I will play and enjoy every system as long as the games are fun and i have little doubt Xbox PS or Wii will fail to provide that experience + PC.

not a handheld gamer since it kills my neck to play those but loved when i could play gameboys etc thru my tv with a controller.

I gave up this argument back with the Ps3 when I tried to justify all of its features for the price. I still believe the Ps3 was an extremely good value for the money. "The Kinect is a huge piece of differentiation, and the fact that we do entertainment and gaming.”

You dont even have any software that shows it off because Kinect rivals got delayed till 2014. Its basicly a paperweight in most countries you launch in.

theWB272263d ago

That baseless statement of yours would be relevant if the Kinect were only a motion device.

Isn't the GGDDR456 rams paperweight since none of the games look a gen ahead as your camp likes to boast?

majiebeast2263d ago (Edited 2263d ago )

None of the games look a gen ahead... Wow that Microsoft koolaid really went to your head. Killzone SF and Infamous SS would like word with you, if you think a open world game like SS can be done on ps3/360 you went full retard.

The kinect is a paperweight for 8 of the 13 launch countries the voice recognition doesnt work and there is like no games to show off its capabilities. Fighter within works gesture based like Starwars kinect not motion based.
