HardwarePal : NVidia and AMD (previously ATI) have been battling the GPU market for years. NVidia always seemed to make the fastest single GPU cards while AMD (ATI) has managed to cover middle and lower segments of the GPU value for money category .
I am happy with the console wars...
I'm sick on console wars. Just get a PS4, and other consoles if you want to. AMD only had the advantage in getting the console market because they had the CPU as well as the GPU and they could make it significantly cheaper than going Intel+NVIDIA. NVIDIA will be doing CPUs, the NVIDIA Shield is a good example and the CPUs will be released in 2015 from what I heard. I would really want to see a generation of console where 1 console has AMD, another has NVIDIA and the other has Intel, because Intel is working on GPUs as well.
" I would really want to see a generation of console where 1 console has AMD, another has NVIDIA and the other has Intel, because Intel is working on GPUs as well." Now that would be *really* interesting, but would cause WWIII on the n4g forums, it's bad enough when they all use the same company. It would produce some big differences in architecture though, the thought scares me slightly.
With Intel's CPU's consoles would costs at least 50% more...
NO amd won because they dont cheat console makers. Microsoft hates nividia because they charged them 110 dollars for the GPU in the xbox no matter the cost savings. When the cost of the xbox GPU hit like 10 dollars to build nividia still charged microsoft 110 dollars for it. ANd they tried to make sony and microsoft sign the same crappy deal this gen thats why they are locked out of the console wars. Its not profitable for nividia because console makers have gotten smart and wont let Nividia rape them anymore with their contract foolishness.
@awi5951 Do you have something to support that claim that Nvidia charged Microsoft and Sony $110 for a chips that cost only $10?
@Miskonius Yeah microsoft and the wallstreet journal microsoft announced that they had to kill the first xbox early because of this bad deal they couldnt even drop price to compete with the PS2. Its called history look it up. They got locked into a same bad deal for the first xbox hard drive as well. Companies reaped the profits of lower production cost and microsoft was left out to take all the hit. So Thats why there will never be a nividia card in a xbox. Also AMD lets the console makers own the cards so they reap the profits of lower production costs.
Whatever wars there are its good for us consumers , better prices :)
Nvidia beg to differ.
The 7990 is out for under $700, sometimes under $600 with rebates, while the Titan and Gtx690 are still at $1000. I think they will have to drop prices or see there profits and sales dive.
except the xbox1 and ps4 "wars" are as boring as coke vs pepsi they are so close that the differences are negligible now pc vs xbox1/ps4 is fun, because its like Bugatti Veyron vs ford fusion
We need the PC vs PC wars so that by the time the new console generations ends we have the fruits of competition (Nvidia/Intel/AMD) to pick from to make the best new console possible. Seriously, if it wasn't for PC's manufacturers trying to beat each other imagine what little advancement there would be in between consoles. You would not see the improvements in hardware, software, or middleware if it wasn't for these companies fighting to be the best in the PC gaming realm.
They are called benchmarks.
Actually there is PS4 vs Xbox one Vs Pc http://www.hardwarepal.com/...
@cunnilumpkin Did all PC owners buy a dual titan system over night then (without telling me?) PC is not a set system so to use your own analogy, PC is equal to anything from a 50cc moped to a Lamborghini Veyron. The average PC is a lot closer to next gen consoles than you would care to admit (probably slightly less powerful).
no, a $200 gpu STOMPS ps4/xbox1 heck a GTX 560 crushes both of them and it is a low-mid spec, 3 year old card that you can get used for under $100
Angel is right. If you look at PC gaming statistics...most people game on laptops still which is pretty damn surprising to me. That is why there are so many graphic settings still in PC games...to fit the range of users. Titan, 690, and even 780 users are a SUPER small share of the market. I would guess that the "average" PC out there is more comparable to the 360/PS3 or less. Sorry to say it...but we are the elite few.
@lonesoul65 Thats not true the used market in PC is huge and alot of people buy cards on ebay and amazon for a great deal. I just sold dual 6870's 2GB last month because im upgrading that will make a guy a nice little system. I played BF3 multiplayer on ultra on those cards at 1080P
"NVidia always seemed to make the fastest single GPU cards while AMD (ATI) has managed to cover middle and lower segments of the GPU value for money category" Rubbish it's a back and forth battle
If the new AMD R9 GPU is actually faster and cheaper than a Titan, I imagine (or hope) that Nvidia will answer aggressively with price drops. If the 770 drops to $300 and the 780 drops to $450 or $500 Q4 2013 will be a very appealing time to do some upgrades. Also this is only this year. It seems the poor consoles will be completely obliterated in terms of power in around two years.
Amd seems to be going to hit hard imo. Like they did with the 7990 release price. Don't know what will happen with games though, as they are porting most of the games from consoles.
