The Promised Battlefield 4 Xbox One Demo at PAX is Just A Nerfed PC Version With a Controller

Just four days ago Microsoft’s Larry “Major Nelson” Hryb promised a juicy Xbox One demo of Battlefield 4 at PAX on his blog.

Unfortunately, this isn't the case at all, as confirmed by two different sources.

This really wouldn't be a big deal if there wasn't such a concerted effort to make it look like it was running on Xbox. The whole Xbox Controller, keyboard hidden crashing to windows 8 is a disappointment if you were expecting to see it run on console. Or at least let people know what they are playing.

EA's for being lazy with development and thinking people wouldn't catch on to the fact that a PC version was being used.

Microsoft is in no position to allow PR slip ups like this at all, but as soon as they make a few good decisions (or should I say finally used common sense), they always become complacent and believe that they will always have an upper hand. They obviously didn't look into BF4's development status before allowing the showcase to go on and it'll cost them.

EA are also not in any position to have PR slip ups considering they've been voted the worst company in America twice and people are just looking for reasons to go after them. It's inexcusable to pass off what could be considered a completely different version of a game as the Xbox One equivalent when it's not.

The article tells you flat out that "the list of games you’ll find at the Xbox booth is [sic] below." It then goes on to list Battlefield 4.

Let's quote directly what it says about the "hands-on."

"Gamers will have a chance to go hands-on with the 'Siege of Shanghai' beta launching in early October. "

Pay attention. That means gamers will be able to go hands-on with the beta that is launching in early October. That does not mean that the chance to go hands-on with the beta is in early October. Arguing that it's not explicitly stated when it's HEAVILY implied is meaningless. The message was clear as day. Larry Hyrb was trying to get people hyped up to play BF4 on an Xbox One and no one did.

I played the game today at PAX and I can confirm that it was played on PCs. I'm not sure if those were top tier or XB1 specced but they were not dev/retail kits. However, the reps said the build was representative of the final retail copy, so there's that.

Like reported it was not running at 1080p, but it wasn't running at 720p either. The game looked as good as any video you see online. I think the majority of cutbacks you're going to see will hardly be noticable outside of AA and resolution, should be 1080p60 at release.

THey became lazy with console ports starting from BF3 yes. Bad company 2 looked way better on consoles than BF3 does and there was plenty of free DLC such as extra maps. I remember I was stunned to see that good graphics on a console like bad company 2 had. In bf3 everything looks worse (ugly trees!!) grass and stones drawing 2 meters away from you and rother objects that you're bound to hit when using a jet because they pop up 0.5 sec before the collision. I hope they did better job now...

Well, it really depends. A console, no matter how powerful, demands some adaptation on the engine since the CPU and GPU are unique, custom-made pieces of hardware. BF4 engine has been around since before ps4 and xb1 dev kits arrived at dice, and I think they don't wanna spend too much money and energy trying to understand this new hardware since they already get "acceptable" results just by copying and pasting the PC version code, given the simplicity of the new consoles.
But that's just a theory.

What about those developing exclusively for XBox One, they should atleast run on actual hardware? Do they?

Note: The XBox One chip is not just like any PC, its chips is special in several areas, ESRAM integrated audio processor, other coprocessors...

BUT making a developers board in micro ATX form factor makes a lot of sense - no need to have enclosures/power/... finished. And running a standard Windows 8 until XBox One OS is finished would give stability to developers.

So, this could be a real XBox One dev kit!

Been playing 64 players games since more than 10 years back starting from BF 1942. That kind of intense action may not be easily managed on consoles. Jumped from 1942 to Vietnam, BF2 and BF2142 and using kb/mouse combo, dedicated servers, commander mode all worked way better and were no match for any other game out there for pc. Medal of honor and COD destroyed the epicness of BF by bringing in cheap streak filled small mp action to cater to general public.

Even though now i'm a 360 game since 2006 and haven't upgraded my pc in 2 years i'd say the best experience for BF would be PC. These console noobs trying to downplay each other's consoles saying there's will be the best version should just shut the hell up and acknowledge that even a mid level PC would easily surpass the quality and experience found not only current gen but next gen as well. However i would still get it for xbone, maybe i'm older now and the new job doesn't allow me too much free time and would rather just switch on the console and not worry about drivers, tweaking the settings or sit on my computer table and play on 27" monitor than 50" plasma and laying on the couch.

So today I was lucky enough to attend PAX Prime in Seattle, WA. I was able to check out my most anticipated title; Battlefield 4, plus I was able to have a few words with daskro.
So, I believe some info has already been posted about the build in show, etc. But again;
-Running on PC's with Xbox One controllers.
-Seems to be the E3 build. Battlefield 3 style death animation, "Battlefield 4 at E3" banner upon death, etc.
-Resolution was set to 1920X1080
-Total of 20 stations set up, 12 of which were active when I was at the station.
-From what I could do, changing weapons per class was not an option with the controller (needed mouse and keyboard).
-DICE devs were NOT present. I did speak to a man from EA, and he was really cool though.
-I spoke to one guy that was at the Xbox booth, and he claimed that more players were in the matches via internet and they were from DICE LA. This was clearly not the case because the map (Siege of Shanghai) was very stagnant with just 12 players.

There are two main problems why this happened:
1. DICE aren't known to be such good programmers (they have problems to fix the most simple of bugs), so they didn't want to show how badly they optimized the game on a Xbox One
2. The Xbox One still have probably some hardware problems, so they wanted to go sure and used PCs

Majority of dice bugs are due to their ambition. That underground bug in BF3 was because they had ground destruction in Alpha. I know this coz I played in the Alpha lol. They had to slowly phase it out of the game. At beta it was there but less. In the final game its so minimal its unnoticeable.

Their only issue is deadline, their ambition is up there but they need time which is something the gamers dont seem to have lately neither do publishers.

There are several things to note in the video. It takes 5 people to install an XBone, two to carry the power brick, two to carry the console, and a babbling baby to give instructions. This is a devkit, it doesn't start up a full UI and seems to go through a strange bootup in general. The Kinect looks like it has to be hooked up and it immediately downloads an update right after power-up.

This is "final, retail" code and hardware? Yeah, they managed to dig out a devkit and get it plugged in and it starts up. This seems to provide more proof of exactly where the XBone is right now, unfinished and clunky. The box isn't quite as big as a VCR but it's about the size of a VCR towards the end, just before they went obsolete.

I've been looking all day for hands on impressions from journalists and well know game sites. I also attended Pax Prime and got my hands on the game. Nowhere did my 15 minute minute hands on multiplayer demo dip significantly. I love how people are taking what other say without providing any sort if video proof.
