How Wii U Will Embrace Digital Sales, Online Play

Nintendo still believes that online play is an important part of 3DS and Wii U’s futures. Speaking to IGN this week, Nintendo of America president Reggie Fils-Aime discussed Wii U’s connected future, including online play and digital purchases.

The story is too old to be commented.

If you really want to push your digital platform, then unlink the user accounts from the hardware, Nintendo. That, currently, is the biggest gripe I have with my Wii U right now.

WiiUExposed1927d ago

Absolutely. I don't want to purchase ANY digital versions of retail games until the prices are at least $10 lower than retail and digital accounts aren't tethered to the hardware.

I don't know why they're taking so long to do something so standard like this.

"I don't know why they're taking so long to do something so standard like this."

Because Nintendo is slow to embrace change. Or at least the shift to online / DD that Sony / M$ have embraced. Like friend codes were dated long before Nintendo introduced them, but they not only outlived the Wii, but still exist on the 3DS. We're sadly at a point where Nintendo needs to do a massive revision, which will likely take a while. Especially since implementing accounts in the want we wan't isn't exactly an easy addition.

good job on proving your attention. WiiU purchases are attached to your account and not your hardware...

Fail Troll

deafdani1927d ago (Edited 1927d ago )

Did you just seriously call me a troll? Really? Take a look at my comment history, buddy. I've talked numerous times rather passionately about Nintendo, because they happen to be my favorite company.

And yes, digital purchases are linked to the account... but the account IS LINKED TO THE DAMN SYSTEM.

And that is beyond stupid. I'm on my second Wii U, dude. My first one got stolen, and I lost everything that I had on its internal memory as well (Trine 2, Runner 2, Zombi U, a lot of Virtual Console games that I transferred from my Wii to my Wii U).

And I wasn't able to recover any of the digital stuff I had on my previous console. Because the account was linked to the system. And that account remains linked to that stolen console, and currently there's no way to rescue that account on a new console. I wasn't able to do it on my second Wii U, so I had to make a new account.

See? If anything, you are the one who's not paying attention here.

Summons751927d ago

The account isn't linked to the system....I bring mine over to my buddies all the time. Try harder

deafdani1927d ago

Now you're flat out lying. Currently, user accounts are linked to the system on the Wii U, and that is a fact.

"It is not possible to log in to your existing Nintendo Network Account on a different system."

This comes FROM THE OFFICIAL NINTENDO WEBSITE. You've been exposed, you little troll. Now shut up.

R00bot1927d ago

They've said that they haven't quite worked it out yet.

That means they're working on it.

But it's probably not going to change in the next system update.

jameson123451927d ago

The only good thing about this though, is that it is very changeable. Its only a matter of software update......... A very long software update.

deafdani1927d ago

I agree with that, it's completely doable. The question is, will Nintendo bother to do it?

I'll be optimistic and say that probably yes. After all, they've already talked about bringing Miiverse to the 3DS, and I think for that, updating the 3DS so it changes its system to user accounts is the most logical way to do it... and if they go with user accounts for the 3DS, then it would make sense to allow people to use a single NNID for both the Wii U and 3DS, therefore unlinking the accounts from the machines. It just makes sense.

But sometimes Nintendo flat-out refuses to make sense, so let's wait and see what happens, I guess. :P

I agree with reggie on every point, i wasn't fond of buying digital till Wii U 3ds times, the content is just there and convenient. the only gripe which many others have is the online account systems need to be linked. i hate having money on my wii u but cant access it on the 3ds.

I take extra care of my 3ds but would still like to be able to easily access my content if the worse does happen though and would give me and many others some piece of mind that there content they bought was safe.

N4g_null1927d ago

Very true.... this would be a nice feature as we get to loan out games a lot easier, optional game installs would be cool also.

BlackWolf1927d ago (Edited 1927d ago )

When they fix the account system, they'll have my full trust to buy digital. Until then, I'll keep physical. But I'm sure they'll get it fixed soon.

Whore_Mouth1927d ago

Just a little info here.

Ninetendo wants major retailers to sell 1,000,000 units this quarter. Yet they have been shorting all retailers by 30% of that margin. Ninetendo has not expressly said that they want more digital sales, but they are forcing retailers to to just that.

Grimhammer001927d ago

I offer this plausible future - Ninny might simply be past the point of relevance in terms of competitve online infrastructure. I suspect they see a future where the other 2 go full on DRM always online. And then Ninny can try to leverage that as the console for those who don't want this.

Only problem is Sony didn't comply. And now MS have back pedalled completely. Leaving Ninny nowhere to go.

They refuse to use the heaps of cash to create a console that's equal or better than the other 2.
They hinge their console future on another gimmick - only they failed to commit. Had they created a true tablet which also attached to the unique Ninny console....winner winner! But no. Fake one touch ghetto tablet with battery that drains quickly and has no multi-touch... It's full of fail.
