Arkane Studios discusses ‘Dishonored’, next title, and PS4, Xbox One development

One of 2012’s most well received games was Bethesda and Arkane Studios’ Dishonored. Seeing release in Oct. 2012 for PS3, Xbox 360, and PC, Dishonored was given high marks by critics and went on to sell over 460,000 copies during its opening month in North America.

Due to strong sales, Bethesda announced in Nov. 2012 that the game had exceeded expectations and that Dishonored would become a franchise.

Examiner.com was given the opportunity to talk with Seth Shain, Systems Designer and Associate Producer at Arkane Studios, about the development of Dishonored, the game’s downloadable content, what is next for the development studio, and what the company thinks about the PS4 and Xbox One.

They should make Arx Fatalis 2.

Lazarus693890d ago

I agree i enjoyed the first one so would like to see another

Swiggins3890d ago

I'd love a Dishonored 2, Dishonored was one of the first games in a long time that did stealth well in my opinion.

Imagine if Dishonored 2 when full open world....you could just Blink yourself around Dunwall killing people as you went....it'd be epic.

Spinal3890d ago

That would just destroy the story given game. The game allowed plenty of freedom already an I think it's great that they focus on story an gameplay an not jus join the open world bandwagon some games just don't need it.

Dishonored felt great the way it was it didn't feel linear to me.

Swiggins3890d ago

I understand what you mean, and I agree that a lot of games jump onto the Open World bandwagon because its trendy

However one of the reasons that Dishonored didn't feel linear to a lot of people was that the levels were so open and vertical. I'm not saying that Dishonored should create a land as large as Skyrim or Los Santos, but maybe instead of having several chapters broken apart by loading screens you could have all the diverse connected to the center of the city like a spider-web. When you need to go to the Golden Cat, you take off from home base to the Golden Cat, when you need to go to the wharf, you do the same. However if you forgot to pick something up at the Golden Cat, say an important piece of intel, you could go back and get it before resuming in the wharfs.

Spinal3887d ago

@Swiggins reply,

I get ya, that does make sense. Although it would mean they would need different methods to travel from one point to another. And what happens when you finish a mission at one point and then you need to travel all the way to your home base in real time? Some people would hate that. I'd prefer the loading screen to take me back to the home base like they have now.

I know people want games with no loading screens these days but i don't find it bad at all. Same with Bioshock infinite, the loading screens are cool with me.

The only game which i love that needs less loading is BF3 my god those maps take ages to load. But i blame Battleglog web browser as BC2 didnt have this issue with the ingame browser.

Salooh3890d ago

Dishonored 2 on next generation please. Really loved it ...

KillrateOmega3890d ago

Dude, Dishonored was awesome. Great stealth, an interesting concept, and a great setting. That steampunk/cyberpunk, bro.

I would totally be down for a Dishonored 2 :)

I wonder how many people who didn't buy Dishonored 2 or Deathloop are going to complain about Arkane making a Marvel game instead of working on an original IP.

isarai127d ago

I didn't buy either, but I still feel like the Arkane that built Dishonored is actually an amazing fit for Blade. Sadly I don't know if that Arkane exists anymore as over 70% of the staff including many veterans left their Austin studio cause they didn't want to make redfall and didn't like where things were headed. And Both Dishonored games were a collab effort from the two studios.

Now Lyon is apparently heading this game, not sure if they collaborating with Austin, and the last game they made alone was Death loop which, while mechanically great, had terrible AI and the loop was a poor excuse to turn a 5hr game into a 16hr game, which was really just the premise of the Prey DLC repurposed.

But we'll just have to wait and see, if they can still nail some buttery mechanics, but fill out their shortcomings in content and AI, I'll love the hell out of this game, I love blade as a character, from the comics to the films and cartoons he's badass and I always wanted a game to really pull it off.

porkChop127d ago

Arkane Austin had nothing to do with Dishonored. They made Prey and Redfall. Arkane Austin losing staff has no effect on Lyon, which is the actual Arkane dev everyone knows.

isarai127d ago

@porkChop

You're wrong bro, Dishonored 2 was the first time they split up and did separate projects, but they both developed Dishonored 1. it's all right here bruv.

Barlos127d ago

I couldn't care less who makes it as long as the game is good.

Profchaos127d ago (Edited 127d ago )

I brought death loop I loved it but it's done I don't want a sequel that would wreck it. I admit I didn't like the dishonored franchise though.

I also enjoyed the blade movies that nightclub scene was the most brutal thing I saw as a kid so it'll be great to see someone bring this to life in a game.

Also arkane are actually great at environmental storytelling. I casually played through death loop but didn't feel I missed much of the story which was largely told by picking up notes and diary entries this is actually a skill that many games try and fail. I feel as if the day Walker will probably benifit from that style of game

Flawlessmic127d ago

well im not expecting this to be a graphical power house, especially based of what little we know it looks like it going be very stylised.

Either way, please let this be good!!!!! Give us the Blade/Wesley snipes game we always wanted!!

im just glad a blade game is coming seeing as the movie reboot is in shambles atm.

the first blade movie to this day is still my favourite marvel movie

shinoff2183127d ago

This game has potential to be dope as fk. I remember watching blade when I was younger and just mesmerized. Fantastic stuff

BrainSyphoned127d ago

What a coincidence! It's also being developed for the console everyone is aVoiding.

DivineHand125127d ago

I was hoping the game was going to look photo realistic like a UE5 game, however, it seems the visuals will likely look like Death Loop. The performance of this engine is significantly better than UE5 so hopefully the gameplay will be fun.

Abnor_Mal127d ago (Edited 127d ago )

The artstyle of the characters look like many will be top heavy with little skinny legs and feet.

Others look like they may have the look of that avengers cartoon where they were short but had big hands and feet, let’s hope it’s not that, always hated that look.

I hope the game is dark and the vampires employ a blink teleport style similar to how you used one of your powers in Dishonored. Lots of gun action with silver stakes and holy water, crosses and hand to hand combat.

Im glad he leaving. Bethesda has been terrible under his leadership. Redfall, Starfield, Fallout76 and the list goes on an on. His leadership style is outdated. Hopefully, MS bring someone in that knows what they are doing.

RhinoGamer88190d ago

I will give you Fallout 76, but Redfall and Starfield's blame needs to fall somewhat on the terrible Xbox publishing team. With all their resources and supposed smarts...they fungled it.

VenomUK190d ago

@Mika He’s the communications guy - you can’t blame him for the quality of the product.

jznrpg190d ago

Maybe they can go to their earlier purchases for replacements . Like Rare devs , Gear devs or 343, one of the very few studios they built up and man they are great.

Crows90190d ago

That could work ...if MS knew what they were doing themselves ...

But let's be real. Xbox was in charge of redfall and Starfield. They just don't know what a good game looks like.

RhinoGamer88190d ago

I interviewed at Bethesda once, and while there were some very smart mid level team members, the upper ranks (EP/VP/Studio Head) were a total boys' club. The Madmen series ego in that lunch was stiffling.

generic-user-name190d ago

Pete Hines was against locking out the majority of their console playerbase (ps gamers). Probably disgusted at the hypocrisy of white knight Phil assuring PS gamers that they can still play COD. Acquisition goes through, Hines goes out.

Goodbye Pete.

gold_drake190d ago

i wonder if he was asked to leave.

im pretty sure not everyone was on board with the acquisition.

Profchaos190d ago

Pretty much everyone outside of Todd has made snide comments against the acquisition but money talks

Cyberpunk 2077 has been saved, so why not Redfall?

CD Projekt Red has recently been commended for turning around Cyberpunk 2077, so why can't Arkane fix Redfall?

One still had a solid game underneath all the glitches, the other doesn't.

Sonic1881195d ago (Edited 195d ago )

I thought the solid game was better than Starfield in my opinion. It was a better western rpg

Crows90195d ago

Cyberpunk is leagues ahead of starfield. Horrible Bethesda like Bethesda game

IMissJimRyan195d ago

For me is more about console wars and gamer culture. As a gamer and Sony fan, I fell good when Xbox and Microsoft go bad. It's like wining the war. CDPR, even though they drop the ball with CP2077, is a fan favorite and good guys. I like and want to like them. If Microsoft is able to make Redfall right it doesn't matter to me, because I want to hate everything about them.

It may seem childish, but I made a lot a friends in Sony community sharing that common enemy. We love hate them. It brings us closer and makes us alike.

Flawlessmic186d ago

Lol atleast your open about it, lots of closet fanboys here that refuse to admit haha

Respect brother hahaha

darthv72195d ago

the recent update is a step in the right direction. Its a very different game now and still has some improvements to be made in the next big update. Glad that Arkane did not give up on this and is doing what they can to salvage their reputation.

smolinsk195d ago

Cyberpunk is still a buggy mess but much better now that's for sure.

BlackTar187185d ago

It’s not a buggy mess anymore.

Charlieboy333195d ago (Edited 195d ago )

One was worth saving....the other isn't
