Media Create Sales Charts: Robots on Top While The Wonderful 101 Fails in Japan with Only 5k Units

Like every Wednesday the Media Create software and hardware sales charts have been released, giving precise idea on what the Japanese gaming market looked like during the week between August the 19th to August the 25th. Unfortunately that idea paints a very dire picture for Platinum Game's The Wonderful 101

Brace yourselves...the trolls are coming.

In all seriousness, W101 should see better numbers in the US. Now that Nintendo has actually gotten off of their asses and actually advertised it.

Baka-akaB4311d ago (Edited 4311d ago )

Let's hope so , but i'm not so sure about a "sentai" inspired game , unless i'm wrong (havent followed much the title and it felt like a strategy based Viewtiful of sort) going big in the west

ritsuka6664311d ago (Edited 4311d ago )

Why am I not surprised. Japan have never been fans of Platinum unique style. What the hell is the matter with japan in this days? -_-

GreatGamePlay4311d ago (Edited 4311d ago )

Cuter and Bigger Boobs have an effectiveness to sell bad games, in Japan.

Wonderful 101 decided not to do that.

abzdine4311d ago

i didnt like the gameplay videos of that game, it's so special and only appeals to a restricted audience.
If they want success they should invest in games that will please most gamers, not 1% of them. All my respects to W101 fans but everyone will admit this game is special looking.

awesomeabe19984311d ago

wooooooooooooow So many disagrees. If yu think about it, Nintendo expected this only shipping 30k copies of W101 to Japan. It is the West where W101 would hopefully sell.

RicardJulianti4311d ago

Also, Nintendo was pushing digital sales pretty hard....I think Japan might have gotten that deal where if you buy Pikmin 3 on the eShop you get 30% off W101

We really won't have solid numbers until Nintendo releases them. Not entirely surprised it sold low though....it only shipped 30k to begin with.

PlayStation_44311d ago (Edited 4311d ago )

only around 5% of all software sales on Wii U are digital, compared to 60% on Vita and 20% on PS3 (2013 only)

3-4-54311d ago

Wonderful 101, looks like a game that COULD have been amazing, but they took the "easy" road and just mashed everything together.

* If they were smart, Each individual character would have been playable as a solo character, with others being able to be added/ recruited to your party throughout the story.

* This way, it makes sense to make 100 characters who each have abilities we can use.

Taking 100 cool heroes and having them all do the same thing and form a fist or whatever is about the laziest dumb ignorant idea I've ever heard of in a game.

That is like a team giving you an open net to win the game and you boot it out of bounds.

Makes no sense. Game had/has so much potential but they wasted it with gimmicks and flashing lights.

They are uncreative.

I'm not surprised by W101 numbers since Japan is more about on the go gaming now days

Abriael4311d ago

Eh, SRW sold better on PS3 than on Vita. It's still pretty sad for a high profile exclusive, especially one as good as W101. The demos I tried are hilarious.

KonsoruMasuta4311d ago

I don't get it. Pikmin 3 did great considering the low install base. What happened here?

Abriael4311d ago (Edited 4311d ago )

@KonsoruMasuta: 1st party against 3rd
Established nintendo Ip vs new IP

PopRocks3594311d ago

You know, I saw a lot of people say "How could Nintendo only ship 30,000 units of W101?! Do they WANT it to fail?"

Seems like it wasn't going to sell there no matter what and Nintendo knew it.

LOL_WUT4311d ago

Excuses, excuses before this you guys were hyping it up! Here's hoping it sells better in the U.S. ;)

PopRocks3594311d ago

@LOL_WUT

Wow, way to take my words out of context, you insufferable troll. I still think the game will be great and I still intend to purchase it myself on the first day regardless of how well it does overall.

All I am saying is Nintendo clearly did not have much faith in the game performing well in Japan.

Hey community, do you see why I call this ingrate a liar, yet? Also awesome agree/disagree ratio. You guys are indulging a troll for corn's sake.

Baka-akaB4311d ago

I dunno who started the feud quite frankly , but i believe it's time you two guys just ignore each others

sherimae24134311d ago

i feel sorry for kamiya and co. by the looks of it it wonderful 101 really looks fun.

Abriael4311d ago

It is. It probably suffered from the lack of installed base

awesomeabe19984311d ago

You guys are not so up to date with Nintendo are you? You do know Nintendo expected this by only shipping 30k copies of W101 to all of Japan?

Knushwood Butt4311d ago

Platinum still get their paycheck regardless of how many copies it sells.

However, it hardly looks good to have a bomb on their CV. They can't rely on Nintendo giving them gigs forever.

jcnba284311d ago

Damn that sucks, ah well hopefully W101 will sell better in the west.

Minato-Namikaze4311d ago

Is the install base that much higer in the west right now? I think nintendo fans are really just waiting for a new mario, zelda, mario kart or smash right now.

Concertoine4311d ago

There are MUCH more wii u'ssold in america, yes.

D_RoyJenkins4311d ago

Lmao so many people hyped up Wonderful 101, I knew it wouldn't be a hit/system seller. I wonder what the next Wii U game Nintendo fans hype up will be.

Neonridr4311d ago

so many people hyped it up right? That's why review scores have been generally very positive..

Nobody said it would sell systems, just that it is a great game.

Lego City is a great game, and it didn't sell systems. Pikmin 3 is a fantastic game, and it didn't really sell systems. Rayman Legends is a brilliant game, and now that it's multiplatform, it won't move anywhere near as many systems as it would have if it was still a Wii U exclusive.

Hard not to hype up a game when journalists and reviewers alike are hyping the game up themselves.

D_RoyJenkins4311d ago

Cool story bro *goes back to playing Killzone Mercenary *

CouldHaveYelledUiiW4311d ago

Yep,
"Well Said"

and "Intelligent" to anyone who pointed out that Neonridr's comment was "Well Said"

knifefight4308d ago

Careful when you say *no one* said it would sell systems.
starfox79's first comment in this thread ( http://n4g.com/news/1312471... ) where he lists Wonderful 101 as the first on a list of 4 games that "expect huge sales worldwide" is just the tip of the iceberg. Kamuymintar's comment predicted 50k sales for W101 in Japan. Oops.

Plenty of others around here spent weeks telling everyone to wait for heavy hitters, with a list that included the Wonderful 101.

Neonridr4306d ago (Edited 4306d ago )

@knifefight - so 50k worth of sales were predicted in a region where only 30k shipped? Doesn't really make much sense.

And we are merely stating that great games are finally coming, so now is a great time to pick one up. Wonderful 101 is one of those reasons, but not the be all end all reason. I will reserve that title for the 3D Mario game launching this fall.

knifefight4304d ago

Re: "so 50k worth of sales were predicted in a region where only 30k shipped? Doesn't really make much sense."

Exactly! See, that's the kind of hyperbolic nonsense that the people here were saying. Wii-U's troubled times were at (or very near) an end. These threads about sales numbers are about just that: sales numbers, and what will or won't, can or can't help something sell. You know this. ;)

You can try and spin it on their behalf all you like, but dude, it's right there. ^_^

Neonridr4304d ago

@knifefight - That still explained nothing. I was pointing out that for a region (Japan) where only 30k units of W101 shipped, how can they expect 50k worth of sales?

Wait till we see the NA numbers, I think they will be decent. Not huge, mind you, but they should be respectable.

knifefight4303d ago (Edited 4303d ago )

Re: " That still explained nothing. I was pointing out that for a region (Japan) where only 30k units of W101 shipped, how can they expect 50k worth of sales? "

Why are you asking ME? I'm not the one who predicted it. Like my post pointed out, that was Kamuymintar. :P
And like I said, his crazy hyperbole is just one example of the nutso numbers gaming that was going on here.

You people can't talk when ye don't even buy your exclusives. Twisted Metal and GOW: Ascension comes to mind.

D_RoyJenkins4311d ago

Oh really, Those are are the games that come to mind? Why not The Last of Us? Or Gran Turismo?

Misaka_x_Touma4311d ago (Edited 4311d ago )

Star Hawk, Sly Cooper 4 and Ratchet & Clank FFA

Minato-Namikaze4311d ago

I think GOW:ascenion is at about 1.5 - 2 million, Not Bad. I bought TM so idk why other people didnt.

Tontus4310d ago

Ill-informed or just ignorant?

Gran Turismo 5 = Nearing 11 million.

God of War 3, Uncharted 2/3, MGS4 = 6 million plus sellers.

LittleBigPlanet, GT5 Prolgue = 5 million plus.

The Last of Us = 3 million copies in 10 weeks.

LittleBigPlanet 2, Killzone 2/3, Resistance 1/2, Motorstrom, Heavy Rain = 3-5 million sellers.

Infamous 1 & 2, Resistance 3, Heavenly Sword, Motorstorm: PR, Demon Souls, Ratchet & Clank: ToD/AciT/A4O - 1-3 million

And who said God of War: Ascension didn't sell well? It's on track to be the 2nd best selling game in the genre this generation. It's sold 1.5m already, 2 million is going to happen later this year/early next year and it will sell 2.75-3.25m lifetime.

Twisted Metal did well for a niche title, roughly 750K for a car combat game is great, will probably reach 1 million lifetime.

"Oh really, Those are are the games that come to mind? Why not The Last of Us? Or Gran Turismo?"

So basically it's okay to laugh if a Nintendo IP tanks, but if Twisted Metal or God of War don't sell well it's no longer fair game because you bought The Last of Us?

Double standard much?

Newsflash, I bought TLoU as well. I also bought New Super Mario Bros. U, which is one of the better selling Wii U games.

Baka-akaB4311d ago (Edited 4311d ago )

I can agree with your point , but in all fairness since it's the theme , twisted metal was hardly hyped and touted before and after release

While in the absence of more in the near and immediate future , stuff like 101 were hyped .

Most of eu never cared about the franchise to begin with , only USA , and that was once upon a time , an era where even Socom was big .

Of course it's unfair on both side to pine this big hopes of success or losses on such a small and niche game . It's clearly dishonest .

I dont see the point of gloating about a platinum not being a big success in japan .. when they've only manage that once with the metal Gear franchise

D_RoyJenkins4311d ago

Those games weren't hyped to be system sellers like TW101

Tontus4310d ago

Where did this idea that God of War: Ascension didn't sell well come from? Sure it's nowhere near as big as GoW3 but selling over a million copies in 3 weeks and being on track to sell ~3 million lifetime is gigantic for the genre of which nothing outside the GoW series has ever achieved 3m+.

And who said it isn't fair game? A flop is a flop, if one exclusive flops and another is a success the successful game doesn't mean the other game isn't still just a flop. It doesn't matter what console the games are on, some flop some succeed.

That guy above said Sony fans don't buy Sony exclusives so someone pointed out that Gran Turismo is huge and The Last of Us performed amazingly thus disproving the notion that PS exclusives don't sell.
