Why Gamescom Matters To The Video Game Industry

Gameskinny – Gamescom is truly unlike any other video game convention in the world. For anyone who’s been to San Diego Comic Con, the 300,000 people who make the annual pilgrimage to Cologne Germany is twice the attendance of the more famous celebration of games, movies and pop culture in Southern California.

This show gets more relevant each year, especially ahead of PAX Prime.

It's the time of year when people in America realize that other people in other countries play games as well. lol

Seriously though, I love having different gaming conventions in different locations around the world. It's good for all of gaming.

@HardTileD_ E3 used to be relevant, to the point of packing parts of the L.A. Convention Center. But, if you read the article, Gamescom is literally filling up the entirity of the convention center itself. Even the halls, and the halls in LACC [on E3's best day] weren't packed.

So, in other words, if Gamescom was in E3's usual location in L.A. Gamescom would fill the entire LACC from top to bottom. Whoever rents out LACC would make double the cash that ESA pays to LACC.

THAT's how relevant it is. The article even says that the lines go outside of the convention walls, even. That's like 30% more relevant than E3 at it's apex. E3 is dying, and Gamescom is killing it and ESA doesn't even know it.

If you went to E3 yourself one of these days, you would know that 50-60% of people that go there are usually Americans. It's the assumption that only Americans play video games. But Gamescom proved that theory wrong.

FYI, I HAVE gone to E3. 3 times. That avatar I'm using is straight from E3.

It is a place where Europe can strut its stuff. I know in the UK we have a strong game developer movement which is gaining more track as the years go by. Europe is a similar situation.

Gamescom was great this year. Next up TGS!

Gazondaily4313d ago

Just got back home from Germany....man Gamescom was amazing. I'm stunned by how the whole city of cologne seemed to embrace the event. It was insane!

Definitely going next year!

Gamescom becomes bigger every year while TGS becomes more irrelevant...

The Problem with Hype

"Think of the last E3, or the last Gamescom, or the last Tokyo Game Show. What was the main thing shown at the press conferences held there? The trailers, gameplay videos, and everything else shown are done so to get you excited about a certain game that they want you to be more interested in. If the trailer is well-done and people like it, the hype of the game goes up and people talk about it more and more. But what happens next? More trailers and details for the game are released, just hyping you up more until the game comes out. But sometimes, when the game comes out, it’s not everything you expected. It’s not as fantastic as you had hoped. It’s not all that it’s hyped up to be. "
