Killer Instinct is Killing Killer Instinct

“Killer Instinct”, the upcoming Xbox One game has the be the worst gaming revival I have ever heard of. And it’s not just for gameplay reasons. The business model that Double Helix (the game’s developers) are following is truly saddening, and makes me lose a lot of faith in Microsoft for supporting it. I’ll explain why.

lol 100 dollars for half of the content, exaggerate much? this guy is such a fanboy its unbelievable! losing faith in microsoft? im pretty sure you never had any to begin with. what a hater so quick to judge before it even releases. how do you know it'll make so much money with that model. do you know how much went into developing? what a tool!

Hufandpuf4325d ago

I'd like to know what you think about the new Tekken game since it's more or less the same process.

Godmars2904325d ago

Pretty sure that game got flayed by critics and gamers alike, whereas in this case fanboys both casual and professional seem to be willing to defend this title no matter what. Up to and including the fact that its not being made by anyone from Rare, not that anyone involved with the original KI are still there, but a dev house which has a poor history as game makers.

Maybe people will wise once the game's out, if the game isn't with it's one character isn't worth it, but who knows.

Hufandpuf4325d ago

I'd rather I actually play it before I call it shit or good. But since I like fighting games I'm excited for it.

creatchee4325d ago

@Godmars290

You get the game itself with Jago (although it may now be a character of your choice) for free. You can buy new characters a la carte for 5 bucks a pop or get 8 for 20 bucks. Or you can splurge and get extra skins and the original arcade version for 40.

NOBODY forces you to do any of those things. There is nothing for people to "wise" about. If you don't like it, don't buy it.

Also, quit it with the whole Double Helix made crappy games in the past argument. Just about everybody who has played the game loves it and it looks like a well made title.

4Sh0w4325d ago (Edited 4325d ago )

Oh please Godmars, your fanboy colors are showing when you're conveniently always "preaching" on xbox related threads, We get it, we get it micro is evil. Read Jokes link below you get to play Jago for free, if the game doesn't do it for you then you can just move on no love lost and not a penny spent. If you like it but want every single skin or piece of content etc theres a $20 bundle with plenty of value, if you love it $40 gets you everything even the original arcade game. How on earth is $40 a bad deal for KI?

maniacmayhem4324d ago

@Godmars
Maybe people aren't defending but excited because from what they have seen it looks great. Maybe they are taking the comments being posted from the fighting community and others on youtube which says this game is shaping out great and applying it to their excitement.

I love how when a game is anticipated it's fanboys defending. God forbid people be genuinely excited for a game.

I never liked KI, but from what I have seen online and from I have read from members on Event Hubs and SRK this game is looking and sounding great.

But yea, who knows why only fanboys defend this game.

"I'd rather actually play it before I call it shit or good"

Kind of the thing: there are better examples, better F2P models out there, yet those defending the game only see everything about it as good. There is no questioning, only acceptance.

maniacmayhem4324d ago (Edited 4324d ago )

Who's defending Godmars, please show us examples, give us links. Who is just bowing down and accepting? What fighting F2P games are good examples of how it should be done?

How about add to the conversation you are so deliberately trying to knock off track instead of just pissing on a game you have never played and no intention of buying.

Godmars2904324d ago

Tekken Revolution has already been mentioned and dismissed by those defending KI. Nevermind that KI is an XB1 title and possible example of what a F2P might be like on the system while the PS4 will have several F2P titles. None of which are fighters or will require a paid subscription to access.

The real question KI defenders should be asking themselves is whether they want the game because it's KI, or because its a launch title. A "free" launch title which upon casual outside glance comes off as being incomplete and must be paid for to play more than one character. Honestly given what's been presented as a launch title I'd rather wait a few months and pay full price for a full game.

HammadTheBeast4325d ago

Actually, in Tekken Revolution, all the characters, modes, and stages are free. The game runs off of "tokens" kind of like in an arcade.

You automatically get 1 token per 15 minutes for MP games, up to a limit of 5, or you can choose to buy some more. You also get arcade mode tokens, 2 per hour.

Practice mode is completely free.

Only other paid things are premium effects, costumes etc.

I actually prefer that model, you rarely run out of tickets unless you play hardcore, and the costumes make it easy to spend where you want to.

creatchee4325d ago

Have you actually played Tekken Revolution? If you're good, you run out of your MP tickets in 5 matches. Then the wait begins for one more. After that, you wait some more. It's cool when you have five saved, but after that, it turns into Candy Crush. I went back to TTT2 quickly.

Hufandpuf4325d ago

That just sounds confusing. Having a system that restricts how much you can play. I'd rather shell out the money for the full game rather than the game have everything but dictate how much I can play it.

Godmars2904325d ago

@Hufandpuf:

You're missing - or ignoring - that the game's more open access. That you get to use and explore much of it before having to commit any money. You're not paying to get things you don't know if you like or not. Like characters.

JokesOnYou4325d ago (Edited 4325d ago )

"Well here’s the thing. Killer Instinct looks to be a horrible game, an awful game,"

-lol, Really? This reads like a fanboy rant.

"Buying every character, every skin, every map, etc. will end up costing you about 3x the cost of an average fighter game. They’ll pull you in with fake deals and before you know it you’ll have spent $100 on it, and even then you’ll only have 50% of the game content. Killer Instinct will charge you way more money than any other fighting game on the market for the same level of content. At least with Street Fighter, Mortal Kombat and Tekken you get more or less everything when you buy the game. They don’t keep a flippin’ pay-gate behind every single character and every single skin."

-lol, uninformed rants are the worst. A quick check would have told him for $40 at launch you get the full game. That's less than the normal $60 because its only 8 characters and not as big as other retail priced fighters.

"But it turns out that the free version is actually a demo of sorts, and the game will offer up multiple (and in my opinion, reasonable) options for those looking to buy the game outright."

"The "Ultra Edition" will cost you $40, and will net you eight characters, accessory packs, costumes, and the original Killer Instinct game in arcade form."
http://www.destructoid.com/...

-lol , so you get to check out Jago go online play for free, then its everything for $40 upfront including the original Killer Instinct arcade game, I'd say that's a helluva value.

If the writer would take time out from crying for a second, they would know the business model does not make you pay for each character individually......in addition, if you purchase the combo breaker, you quickly see the price reduce to $2.50 a character. This statement from the writer sums up their credibility, "At least with Street Fighter, Mortal Kombat and Tekken you get more or less everything when you buy the game." First off, how do you more or less get everything thing? You either do or you don't. Must not remember MK's preorder skin based on retail store, skin packs, then the komplete edition. Secondly, did you just use a Capcom game to validate your point, when we soon will be receiving the 4th rendition of Street Fighter 4?

Killer Instinct: The Most Underrated Fighting Video Game in History

Killer Instinct is like the forgotten cousin at the fighting game family reunion.

yeah they were such good and fun games but they never really reached the mainstream audience. Killer Instinct was widely known and respected.

Cacabunga68d ago

Killer instinct is great, especially on snes but it’s not the most underrated fighter.. for me it’s Power Stone. So much potential in this series

Jawsh66668d ago

Bloody Roar was a game that had a sick concept but wasn’t made the best. I’d say Killer Instinct was the opposite of that, it was well made but the roster of characters were so similar to every other fighting game in that era that it ended up feeling like more of the same. I could be wrong that’s just how I remember it at the time and I played a ton of KI on SNES because it was one of the first games I owned.

PRIMORDUS68d ago

I loved this game in the arcade, my main was Jago, Ultra Combo!!! https://www.youtube.com/wat...

DivineHand12567d ago

That combo was way overkill 😂

PRIMORDUS67d ago

I know haha, I loved Jago.

Bathyj68d ago

You're kidding?
It enjoyed probably more success than it deserved.
Unlike Tobal 2

MeteorPanda67d ago

Tobal 2 was awesome. Sold really well cause art similarity to dragon ball

jjb198168d ago

I remember trying my hardest to learn that "Ultra... Ultra.... Ultra...." finish. Such a great fighting game.

Popsicle68d ago (Edited 68d ago )

I can tell you definitely got some SNES time in. The slight differences in the ports due to hardware constraints were interesting. For example, the arcade version was Ultraaaa Coooommboooooooo! versus Ultra….Ultra….Ultra on the SNES.

Though SNES overachieved as a port for as demanding as a game KI was.The arcade version was one of the first cabinets with a dedicated hard drive and the SNES version was 32 megabyte cartridge which was huge for that system at the time.

jjb198167d ago

Yeah, for sure. My local childhood arcade was always packed and it was hard to get a game in but once the SNES version came out, I was hooked. I can still feel the click of the power button.

Barlos577d ago

I'll have to get this! Been a big fan of KI since the very first one.

Petebloodyonion576d ago (Edited 576d ago )

I love KI (still play the old arcade version) but feel like the Xbox version is like a big intimidating chessboard with no easy way to instruct you to play chess.
The game is so deep in terms of little things to do that it makes Smash Bros melee look like a casual experience.
Honestly, doing a combo Breaker is punish/reward by itself but hey you can add a counterbreaker.
Here's what you also need to know
Breaking Shadow-linker
Instincts
Shadow counter
Auto double,
linker, manual
ender
etc,

There isn't going to be any chance of this being played at tournaments unless it appears on all platforms like all fighting games.

SPEAKxTHExTRUTH580d ago

SF5 didn’t appear on all consoles and was still played at Tournaments. I’ve seen KI tournaments recently so I don’t think your opinion is accurate.
