Kinect Sports Rivals and Fighter Within hands-on previews – it actually works -by Metro

GameCentral tests out the next gen version of the Kinect motion sensor and finds that the first wave of games are far better than you’d think.

HammadTheBeast4330d ago

I beg to differ. The small amount of gameplay hands on shown here is pretty laughable at best.

http://www.youtube.com/watc...

Fighting games Cannot work on Kinect. Make it unprecise and it's just bad, but make it too precise, and no one can play because they can't actually fight.

Bigpappy4329d ago (Edited 4329d ago )

You are watching YouTube videos. These people are actually PLAYING THE GAME. Do you see where I am going with this?

If you want to win, you have to PLAY THE GAME.

When you get to play. I might try to listen to your rant. As it is, you watched a YouTube video for your preview (Not interested).

@Godmars290: Casuals but and play games too. Wii sold more that 100 Mil consoles remember? You don't think M$ and Sony would like to tap in to that, you would be crazy.

Godmars2904329d ago

The real point is since Kinect comes with the XB1, it doesn't matter if you play it or not. Whether or not devs will do something with it, more than VC, does.

But really, from what's been shown you can't say that the two games or nothing but party titles. Things you roll out for casuals.

HammadTheBeast4329d ago

2 sentences classify as a rant now?

malokevi4329d ago (Edited 4329d ago )

Somebody who is buying a Playstation and hates Microsoft watches a video on Youtube and forms an opinion.

Meanwhile, somebody who works for a gaming website gets a hands-on demo, and forms an opinion.

Who do you trust? Journalists or detractors?

The answer: neither. They are both full of you-know-what. I'm going to try this game before I dismiss it.

BallsEye4329d ago

They guy in the article got scanned pretty good by kinect! It actually looks like him + muscles.

rainslacker4329d ago

I think they both want to tap into the casual crowd. I'm not crazy. Question is, are you willing to buy into the Kinect just to support MS fixation on the casual market?

OT: The demos shown had lag. that isn't 1 to 1 motion gaming. People are buying into the marketing, yet no real world application has been shown to work the way MS claims it will. Even Kinect Sports Rivals had about a 1 second lag. I won't even get into fighter within. How anyone can defend that is beyond me. Huge lag, and the onscreen action was nothing like what the players were doing. I don't need to play it to see that it is a bad game.

This is the same thing that happened with Kinect 1.0. People brought into it on the promises made. The demos which never lived up to reality. Then they grew tired of it because they realized it wasn't going to be the revolutionary thing MS made it out to be. How, based on these 2 games, can anyone think that things will be different this time?

Bigpappy4329d ago (Edited 4329d ago )

@rainslacker: I don't know where to start with your comments as they are 100 % your opinion and you are entitled to that. But because you have this bad impression of Kinect, does not entitle you to come here and just make stuff up to support your hate of the device.
I am not buying Kinect to support M$, I need them to support me. That is a weak attempt at an insult. Are you buying PS4 to support Sony? Just stupid.

1) where did you get info that K-Sport Rivals has "a 1 second delay"?

2) If you watch the interview with the developer, he explains why they when for gesture over direct 1:1 animation.

3) What real world apps have you seen that don't work.

4)I have Kinect1 and loved several games for it (Kinect Sports 1&2; K- Adventure; Fruit Ninja; Dance Central; The catapult game; and others to a lesser extent. I will be getting Kinect 2. I do know some gamers that have no need for it, but their wives and kids do. You think people are buy the games due to marketing only because that theory supports your opinion. They are games that did really well and others that did not.

5)"The demos which never lived up to reality"

Kinect was sold by having people demo K-sports and K-adventure. You are saying they did not live up to reality? The games were better than the demos. Do you realize that K-sports sold over 5 Million Copies in the first year and a half at full price?

I don't know what it is you people get out of trashing other peoples interest. But you have no facts.

rainslacker4328d ago

Some of what I say is opinion, other is noticeable fact. However, since you did ask I will explain why they are my opinions.

1. This video. When the player moves, the on screen action has about a 1 second delay

http://n4g.com/news/1337038...

Fighter Within was much worse, and not even 1 to 1. The developer even said they are using QTE(fancied up with marketing talk) type action for the lower half of the body. I'm sure you don't need me to link the video.

2. Yeah, and it's BS. He's marketing away a hardware issue. It's the same thing many developers do to get around the limitations of the current Kinect.

3. Milo for one. Most other games for Kinect 1.0 that never brought about the potential that MS claimed. The MS demonstration of their UI after their reveal showed it wasn't anywhere close to the way they presented it...again explained away as an early build...fair enough I guess. But sure seems like a lot of excuses are being made for why things are the way they are.

4. Yes, there are stand out and fun titles for the device. Does that warrant requiring it for every single user? Let the people that like it bear the cost. Sure it's not mandatory to use anymore, but they still have to buy the thing if they want to play games on the X1. How many people brought the original Kinect only to trade it in later, or throw it in the closet? They brought into the hype and found it lacking once the novelty wore off. The same thing is going to happen here barring some amazingly revolutionary implementation from some developer. Same thing has happened with Move. Same thing happened with the Wii. Why do you believe MS is going to break this historical trend? However, even with the good standout titles today for the Kinect 1.0, most of it is still shovel-ware crap.

5. Yes, those games which are no more than party games like Wii Sports. Does that make the Kinect the revolutionary device that I see so many Xbox fans clamoring for?

I'm not trashing other people's interest. I'm just asking why so many are willfully ignoring the shown faults in the demonstrations given. After the Kinect 1.0 didn't live up to expectations, I would expect people to be more cautious.

Let's face it, before Kinect was mandatory, only edonus cared enough to talk about it on here. Now everyone talks about it like it's the next big thing, when all evidence suggest otherwise.

Just so you know, I will be getting a Kinect 2.0(with or without system) when I can use it on the PC. Since I am using Kinect now for a job I'm pretty sure my clients will want me to use it. However, if there is no discernible difference, or that difference is minimal, I don't really see the point. So far what I've seen does not solve the issues we are having with the device. In fact, they are the exact problems we are having with the device.

Bigpappy4328d ago (Edited 4328d ago )

Ok rainslacker. I see you are passionate about your opinion. What you have to keep in mind is that most of us, who support Kinect2 on every X1, either have Kinect1 or like what we see with Kinect2.

your perception of lag has been noted, but I still don't understand your mission with lecturing us on how you feel about Kinect. How do you even have clients if you are so negative towards the device they are obviously interested in is beyond me. If I was your client and you had so low an opinion on the device, I would surely seek the help of someone else who at least understands my interest in the device.

You think because you don't like it then people who do are just falling for marketing. That is insulting to use who still have Kinect1 and see the same demo's that are pissing you off. We just don't share your view of them.

"Kinect Sports Rivals and Fighter Within hands-on previews – it actually works!"

We've seen. Visual evidence is more telling than a written article.

Gazondaily4329d ago

So this chap, who himself admits to never liking Kinect, has played the games and tested the hardware, but you know better because you watched a few videos? I'm not saying you're wrong but you shouldn't discard his opinion straight away.

Anyway, I'll be at Gamescom on Saturday. I'll be very critical and find out just how bad the latency is.

robotgargoyle4329d ago

Yes, please let us know. If they're packing it in, I wanna know if the improvements have been worthwhile. The original Kinect had potential, but was ultimately flawed tech that didn't live up to expectations.

I have no doubt that Kinect Sports Rivals will be the Kinect game to play. I just hope the new Kinect can be robust enough and utilized more often to allow a better or more intuitive way to play.

P.S.- While in Germany, drink a fresh, delicious hefeweizen for me and have a safe trip.

robotgargoyle4329d ago

Another thing. Do think that "all" the announcements have been made by Sony and MS?

Seems like there is something missing.

Or was it just underwhelming because I had unfairly judged it to be something bigger than it actually was?

gaelic_laoch4329d ago

Sounds like they are surprised it actually works!

Dakriz4329d ago (Edited 4329d ago )

Hey kinect is great for my wife and boy do I love the loving I get lmao

Dakriz4329d ago

Well to put it in your terms I'm a racing fan and since the videos (YouTube) of in game footage of Driveclub are so awful I am supposed to think the game sucks with out even playing it wow makes so much more sense than hating the fact that the game does not allow you to customize or tune your cars.

"--it actually works!"....as a Rock Em Sock Em robots simulator! DAT GAMEPLAY!

I KID, I KID, don't kill me. I really don't think the game looks good though, based on the initial gameplay video. Kinect Sports Rivals looks kind of fun though. It would be great for kids and parties.

dazzrazz4329d ago

You wonder why they only showed short clips, this sh**t has tons of input lag http://youtu.be/Y6uVF-G3INw

spaceg0st4329d ago

Dude, lol, watch when the chick ducks... It's serisously a half second delay to the in game move. I thought this stuff was supposed to be close to 1:1...

The kinect demos are cool, but this just doesn't really make sense...

RealOldGamer2445d ago

Night Trap was awesome, cheesy, and terrible all in one. It's a game everyone has to play.

I also loved Street Fighter The Movie, and Street Fighter: The Movie - the game.
Kylie Minogue, Ming-Na Wen and The Muscles From Brussels all in one movie/game? Yeah its already awesome.

Top 10 Worst Kinect Games

Alex S. from Link-Cable writes: "A few days ago, Microsoft announced that they were officially discontinuing their Kinect motion-sensing accessory. What was once considered a chief-rival to Nintendo’s Wii revolution and an integral part of the Xbox One’s launch has come to an end, and we here at Link-Cable… couldn’t be happier. The Kinect, while sporting impressive technology never managed to live up to its full potential and most of the games released for the device either had shoe-horned in support or barely functioned as intentioned, in part because of the device’s very specific ideal conditions. So as the Kinect sails off into sunset, we’ve decided to remember the worst of times and look back at the Top 10 Worst Kinect games."

Kinect, for me, is easily worth owning for two things: Dance Central for me acting like an idiot and having fun, and Kinect Party for my kids when they want to have easy-access stupid fun at like a kid's party. Those were the only games I have enjoyed on it, and they couldn't be done any other way (well, I guess that KP is EyeToy-level work). But my hope is that when motion control falls away, we'll get a proper DDR again.

andrewsquall2784d ago (Edited 2784d ago )

Yet for 150 quid it is and was most certainly not worth owning for solely those 2 games, that you have to pay money for also.

Now far be it from me to tell you what is worth it or not worth it to you. But if that is what is worth it to you, I don't want to know what ISN'T worth it lol.

RyanDJ2783d ago

It was worth it to buy one used for half price and get one of those two games for free. ;)

datriax2784d ago

All of them are tied for 1st place.

Star wars wouldnt be so bad if it didnt have.... the dancing. Ughhh that dancing.

They should do a list of 10 best kinect games as well. I'm sure fruit ninja and gun stringer would be on there. Those are actually fun to play.
