Killzone: Shadow Fall Does Away with XP

IGN - Our Rewind Theater exposes Combat Honors, the classes, and how 1,500 challenges are taking the place of XP.

AlexanderNevermind4325d ago

Looking forward to this most of all.

Abash4325d ago

And Killzone continues to set itself apart from other FPS games

LOGICWINS4325d ago

Well...its following in the footsteps of KZ2. KZ3 was CODified.

Enemy4325d ago (Edited 4325d ago )

I love this about Guerrilla. They stick to what they believe in, they really don't care about what everyone else is doing. The realistic, weighty controls and unique MP are what separates Killzone from everything else. Everyone is so used to baby FPS like COD that they're seriously starting to believe handling a gun in real life is like picking up a water gun and spraying for XP.

It's also worth noting that the Killzone games have some of the most amazing art direction out there. Helps the KZ universe feel more believable and immersive as well.

AlexanderNevermind4325d ago

Taking after K2 is the way to go. Stick to your roots Killzone. Only thing I don't care for is the 24 player limit. I would rather 16v16 again.

TekoIie4325d ago (Edited 4325d ago )

@Enemy

Look I love Killzone. Its my favourite PS exclusive shooter but your just making stuff up. NO ONE looks at KZ and thinks "Oh yeh I love it's unique multiplayer"...

"They stick to what they believe in, they really don't care about what everyone else is doing."

... I think we both know how much closer KZ3 was to your standard shooter on the market compared to KZ2.

KZ2 had a fun class merging system, weapons required a fair amount of usage to understand the mechanics behind them. Maps were well designed and sometimes epic battle lines would form with each team trying to push the other back.

All that went with KZ3... The best they could come up with for KZ3 was Battlefield's rush mode... but with cutscenes. I'll admit it was epic way to reward the best players, but you can only watch a cutscene so many times before it becomes repetitive.

They also added a form of killstreaks which were ribbon based because y'know... We all really wanted that/s

But with all that said Shadow Fall's looking good. I hope some pure gameplay footage comes out because I want to see my beloved M82 rifle on PS4 :D

kneon4325d ago

@Enemy

And don't forget the sound, KZ games have phenomenal sound. Must be played with the surround sound cranked to 11.

Unlocks gun attachments and not the guns? Ehhh. I like earning them or at least unlocking them. Probably won't pick this up now...

jimbobwahey4325d ago

That's a shame that you only play games for the virtual "Well done!" and pat on the back for making meaningless numbers increase in value.

I play games for fun :)

shivvy244325d ago

i think its great that the weapons are unlocked , i dont play MP heavily so usually i dont unlock much guns !

Tctczach4325d ago

It's not the virtual "well done" it just sucks that all weapons are available from the start.

sobekflakmonkey4325d ago

Yeah, I love the direction they're taking, it's old school but not at the same time, fuckn amazing, ALSO, the MP DLC is free....it's gonna be free....fja;lksdjf FREE!!! Say good-bye to being nickle and dimed my friends...

ginsunuva4325d ago

Yeah, remember the good ol' days back before CoD4 in 2007 when we didn't play games to make big numbers pop up onscreen or unlock stuff?

Tctczach4325d ago

When did I say I want picking this up? I have said multiple times I'm getting both consoles do please educate me.

Infamous24325d ago

You acting like IGN is right about everything they say LOL. They are guessing that you don't unlock any guns man, u not very smart are you?

Tctczach4325d ago

Pretty sure going off what these guys say has nothing to do with the level of my intelligence.LOL

mxrider21994325d ago (Edited 4325d ago )

na its on the kz website in the details all guns are unlocked from the start they say it like they figured out but they didnt they read it off the kz website

InTheLab4325d ago

Surely you see the difference between a regular shotgun and a mod that allows you to shoot flaming rounds?

This way, there are no over powered weapons as everyone has them.

Would you like it if they repeated the missteps of Cod with overpowered high level weapons like the still broke AN94?

HammadTheBeast4325d ago

Gotta love MW2's AK-47 though. Gun felt amazing.

T24325d ago

Ya I always thought it odd fps rewarded higher level players with even more power making new players even worse ... Ive always wanted a challenge mode where vets have to use underpowered weapons to gain special medals or achievements

Xsilver4325d ago

tctczach it wasn't confirmed by GG its just ign speculations.

Xsilver4325d ago

referring to the unlocking guns part

That's really cool and different. Interesting. Hmm..

-Foxtrot4325d ago (Edited 4325d ago )

...WIN

Thank God, I'm sick of XP in games, it always reminds me of COD...was it the first game to do it on a multiplayer game, I don't know, it's late I can't be bothered to look online BUT regardless it became popular with the franchises comeback game, Modern Warfare, back in 2007.

I hope other developers start to drift away from the standard layout of multiplayer games.

Remember Uncharted 2s online, it was simple, different and fun yet Uncharted 3 comes out and they completely ruined it by making it "COD-like" upgradable boosters, kickbacks, weapon mods, loadouts, paid boosters it just made the game less fun and enjoyable in my opinion. Gone was the simplicity and was replaced by the standard online model. In Uncharted 2 you had two boosters which didn't do much after you got to level 30 (was a few which were a pain in the arse like Situational awareness) and everyone started with the same weapons...you had to earn those better weapons by finding them on the map. <sigh> I doubt it but I hope they go back to it in Uncharted 4, even classic mode in Uncharted 3 isn't the same. I feel like they did the same with the Last of Us, great online but things like loadouts in a game about scavenging seems a tad pointless, sureley you would be expected to find and craft better weapons on the map. The only thing you should of been allowed to pick is what kind of pistol do you want to start out with and everyone got a crappy AK/riffle etc

WeAreLegion4325d ago

Battlefield 2 introduced the leveling system in FPS's, but COD4: Modern Warfare popularized it. It's a great mechanic that I enjoyed for a long time, but I prefer to be on a level playing field with people who have more free time than me. :)

HammadTheBeast4325d ago

And then, as usual, CoD butchered the system. Points in CoD don't even matter, it's filler stuff to cater to the part of the mind that's in charge of the reward section.

Faztkiller4325d ago

I feel the same I mean i still liked Uncharted 3 multiplayer played a crap load of it at one point in the beta it was really good but when the game came out IDK what they did to the guns but it didn't feel right. Loved Uncharted 2 multiplayer Im starting to hate loadouts and Classes same thing that killed Halo trying to be COD.

15 Last-Gen Games That Still Compete with Current-Gen Graphics

GB: "Say what you will about the state of the industry, but even as games evolve, their graphics remain a key aspect. Even some of the biggest flops this year sport some gorgeous visuals, as publishers and developers push the boundaries of what’s possible, pouring years of time and money into their work."

Quantum Break and Ryse are two that I was really surprised did not get an FPS boost option when played on the Series X|S. when i started playing both on the XBO, I thought they are both good, but after playing them also on my steam deck (in 60fps) I just cant go back and play the base games on XB. They really benefit from that faster frame rate.

Driveclub is another i wished had a HFR mode on PS5.

MatrixxGT237d ago

Most games this gen are the exact same except now we get faster loading through SSD and a res and fps bump. Graphically not much has improved, hell most last gen games are being relabeled and resold as “remastered” with the aforementioned updates.
I haven’t seen or played anything on either platform that couldn’t be run on last gen. Guess the law of diminishing returns is really showing itself these days.

127maXimus237d ago

Most games from 20 years ago are basically the same as today, with resolution and fps upgrades. The AI is still just as braindead as it always has been, worlds are full of static, boring characters that do the same thing over and over.

Demetrius237d ago

Smh another reason why graphics haven't improved that much is because most devs too caught up on cross gen. Ps4 was/still a dope console but time has moved on we're halfway close to a ps6 reveal and devs still will be making games on last gen in 2025. Then theres Microsoft purposely got the Xbox series s that causes more devs to try to pull strings as much as they can smh. It's a mixed bag of stuff, the only ones I see pushing hardware is sonys studios and even some indie games look better

Why Guerrilla Games Shouldn't Abandon the Killzone Series

Hugely disappointingly, it seems that Guerrilla Games, developers of the Killzone and Horizon series, may be done with Killzone for good.

1 was fine, overhyped as a " halo" killer
2 was a graphical beast at the time, and felt heavy
3 was good a refinement of 2 but not much else. weird audio issues environment were to quiet
shadow fall was pretty but bland

OtterX244d ago (Edited 244d ago )

Shadowfall had great Multiplayer though. Too bad the campaign was meh at best. It did have the occasional great moment sprinkled in.

TheNamelessOne244d ago (Edited 244d ago )

I played through 2/3 multiple times. I played through the original once, but it felt pretty lukewarm for me. I couldn't be bothered to beat Shadow Fall. I got a couple hours in and just went "I'm done". Never touched it again. It was awesome on the tech side, being a launch title, but it didn't even match up to the first game when it came to actually having fun playing it.

Rude-ro244d ago

3 in 3d was an amazing experience to be had.
Although not many experienced it as intended for good reasons.

just_looken244d ago

You forgot the ai advancements on the playstation 2 killzone one you could have a full team of bots doing everything even playing the objective that was a big thing.

In killzone 2 they always flanked you and when available used the high ground.

Playing killzone 2 no hud 5.1 audio was/is awesome

MDTunkown244d ago

They should finish Horizon story first

darthv72244d ago

I dont mind if someone else takes up the mantle for the KZ franchise. We are several years removed from the first game. It certainly could use a remake to gauge interest in the rest of the series. I know it has its fans... Im thinking of how a proper reboot can rekindle that old dormant flame and bring in a new generation of fans in the process.

just_looken244d ago

You forgot killzone mercenaries on the ps vita but it was the worst selling sony game for awhile there.

Yui_Suzumiya244d ago

Yeah, a remake would be pretty awesome

anast244d ago

They should let it go or sell it. No use spending millions on this project.

LucasRuinedChildhood244d ago

Would like a new IP before Horizon 3. Just because games take so long to make these days.

Killzone After a Decade in Hibernation

It's been 10 years since Killzone: Shadow Fall arrived for PlayStation 4 early adopters, and there's no sign of another sequel.

Obscure_Observer587d ago

Sadly it was dumped by Guerrilla to focus on Horizon games only. Mainline, VR and Multiplayer.

Vengeance1138587d ago

lmao sadly? Are you pretending to have actually played the series lol Sorry bud, no Killzone on Xbox.

Cacabunga587d ago

With the downfall of COD and BF, Killzone def. has a chance to make a groundbreaking comeback

587d ago
Notellin587d ago (Edited 587d ago )

What a low-functioning reply here typical of the fanboy N4G community.

Rimeskeem587d ago

“Dumped”

I think it’s called moving on.

Barlos587d ago (Edited 587d ago )

They brought out 4 main games and 2 spin offs: one on PSP and one on Vita. That's a decent run for any series. I also understand that Shadow Fall wasn't a success commercially despite it coming out at PS4 launch, and as a big Killzone fan even I couldn't get into it, so I think Sony/Guerrilla could see it was time to move on.

Don't get me wrong, I'd love another Killzone game in the vein of KZ2 but it's just not happening. Hell, I'd even take a remake or remaster of the first 3 games.

I'd hardly say it was "dumped" though, it spanned 3 console generations and 2 handheld generations.

1Victor587d ago

@obscured:”Sadly it was dumped by Guerrilla to focus on Horizon games only. Mainline, VR and Multiplayer”

Happily it was dumped by Guerrilla to focus on Horizon games only. Mainline, VR and Multiplayer( edited to reflect the writer true feelings and allegiance)
Kill zone was a FPS far ahead of its glitched competitors with nauseating bad camera angles, 10 years old screaming curses like a drunk sailor and bot aiming assist.

ChasterMies587d ago

“Sadly”?

The Horizon games were among the best games of all time. Killzone Shadowfail wasn’t.

Shane Kim586d ago

True, but damn the memories of KZ2 multiplayer. Still no MP as fun as that to this date.

Mr_cheese586d ago

Dumped and shelved are two different things

Tacoboto586d ago

And Sony as a whole dumped the FPS genre so they wouldn't have products competing with COD and (until purchase) Destiny.

GoodGuy09587d ago

I loved the KZ2+3 campaigns and MP in 2. There could be so much more done with the franchise. Horizon although good, I wish they'd go back to this wonderful IP. Take a break from Horizon please.

Flawlessmic587d ago

Agreed dude, I would absolutely love a reboot of the series, one can only hope that either resistance or killzone makes a return.

Have nothing but great memories, especially of the first 3 games, but all 4 were show stoppers graphically.

blackbeld587d ago

To making it a successful reboot they have to change that buttons layout! Make it playable like the cod button layout. Otherwise I’ll skipping it again.

Rynxie587d ago

And that's the reason why many fps games failed. Instead of being original and catering to it's fans, they tried to make it like cod. No, kz doesn't need cod button layout. It needs to be like it was on kz2 or balanced liked kz3.

Lightning77587d ago

I think Kill Zone would do great in Sony's LS push. As well as MAG reboot and bring back Resistance into LS.

Sharky231586d ago

@Lightning77

I think WarHawk would have been a great Live service game.

thorstein587d ago

Killzone games were so polished. The gameplay was just simple joy. MP was one of the best experiences.

I remember KZ3, just staring at how awesome they animated the water and then getting wasted because of it.

P_Bomb587d ago

It’s been a decade? Now I’m sad.

LiViNgLeGaCY586d ago

I hear ya bud. We're due for a revival.
