Sony trumps Microsoft again with a confident, comprehensive showcase at Gamescom

After a series of turnarounds and with FIFA and Call Of Duty in its corner, following Microsoft was a more difficult task for Sony at Gamescom. At E3, all PlayStation had to do was turn up and collect the spoils, but here, with significantly revised competition and the temperature rising ever higher as we lead into launch, if felt like Sony needed to remind us exactly why it has gathered so much goodwill with its new console.

It may not have had many triple AAA games announcements, but it did answer most of the remaining questions regarding the PS4, and that's what matters the most. Games will come, inevitably. PSV was served in games, price cut, so was the PS3. The PS4 has a release date. Infamous and Shadow Fall still look amazing. Shadow of the Beast got me more than hooked. And Naughty Dog is confirmed to work on the PS4. That was a good conference.

Lucreto4326d ago (Edited 4326d ago )

This

Just because Sony didn't announce AAA games doesn't mean they are not coming. People have already forgot this generation. Sony spread out the announcement and have AAA games released throughout the year.

Naughty Dog have shown a teaser at the last few VGA at the end of the year and I expect it again this year.

Yeah of course they are coming but really, Sony had the chance to win the war of exclusives already ...Gamescom is the perfect opportunity to tease some new AAA games. Maybe Sony is waiting for VGA to win over the US crowd, or the projects simply aren't ready to be shown yet ...but I have expected more than this honestly.

President4326d ago

PS4 has a lot of momentum going on right now, Sony didn't need to show everything they've got.

nukeitall4326d ago

@Lucreto:

Sony was supposed to show you why you wanted a PS4 with AAA games. Instead we got a bunch of indie games.

Frankly, there are some good indie games, but I rarely put down my money on them. They are the sort of games that kind of compete with Android/iOS type games.

Not my cup of tea.

@zod18:

"Maybe Sony is waiting for VGA to win over the US crowd, or the projects simply aren't ready to be shown yet ...but I have expected more than this honestly."

So now that gamescom has happened, it looks like we are waiting for VGAs for announcements?

Frankly, I don't think Sony is in a financial situation to continue this race. MS is a rich mofo, and their Xbox 360 is bringing them in loads of profit at this point.

That is likely why you will continue to see a few homegrown exclusives and a load of indies. That is Sony's play!

MWong4326d ago

Well Gamescom is not over and we still have PAXPrime. You never know additional AAA titles might be getting named.

ABizzel14326d ago

I think the messaging was that Sony is focused on making gaming easier and more accessible to gamers and developers. Sony seems to be promoting indies developers, pushing PC developers to move over to PS4, and getting strong third party relations from the smallest to the largest studios and publishers, and saving their big guns for later.

M$ seems to be focused on their exclusive content, and promoting games that sold 5+ million the 360 or games that won big at E3 (Call of Duty, Battlefield, Assassin's Creed, Fifa, and The Division).

Sony is taking a chance on making a PlayStation ecosystem where developers and gamers want to come be a part of.

While M$ is betting on sure things and proven / likely system sellers to build an install base.

Best of luck to both of them, but as a PS3, PSV, 360 and a future PS4 owner I have to say that Sony ecosystem is looking like the best option to me. M$ has done a good job of turning around the XB1.

(I have other consoles & PC, but they don't pertain to this)

Lucreto4326d ago (Edited 4326d ago )

@nukeitall

What is the point of announcing AAA titles now and we have to wait until 2015 to play them.

I expect Naughty Dog will annonce their title at the VGA's and will be out at the end 2014.

They could have announce some AAA titles then people will moan here is no gameplay and it should be out sooner. Look at the people who are disappointed there was no gameplay for The Order. I doubt we will see anything until next year.

We will get the games and once Microsoft loses interest in the hardcore again Sony will be poping out exclusives every couple a months.

Outside_ofthe_Box4326d ago

I'm guessing a good amount of unannounced PS4 games aren't close to being finished yet. People have complained about Sony showing games too early. Quality takes time at the end of the day. The Order 1886 is perfect example as we will most likely not see anything about until 2014 with a 2015 release date.

Also very funny how nukeital is complaining about Sony not showing exclusives when he's the first to say exclusives don't matter. The flip flopping is hilarious.

pompombrum4326d ago

@skips... wait project spark is coming to PC? That's news to me.. and great news too!

nukeitall4326d ago

@Lucreto
"@nukeitall

What is the point of announcing AAA titles now and we have to wait until 2015 to play them. "

But the competition are showing tons of AAA games releasing in 2014. In 4 years, there are so many games to play that I almost don't care about new games anymore.

DARK WITNESS4326d ago

have to say i agree with Zod.

I would be lying if i say i was not disappointed.

after all the talk about the conference to be focused on ps4 and more games are coming..

ok after watching 30 min of indie titles being announced I almost started to get the same feeling I got from watching MS talk about TV.

anyway, while I am still not a big fan of MS, I don't feel as harsh towards them as I did. Sony could have really gone for the kill but they didn't for whatever reason.. or quite simply didn't have that killa blow so to speak.

I have always seen the ps4 as the longer term investment just like the ps3 has proved to be. MS has yet again gone for throwing money at everything to get that instant 1-up that does not lead to any sort of long term victory.

already we are that with minecraft.

4Sh0w4326d ago

I preferred what I saw from microsoft.

JackStraw4326d ago

@nukeitall Sony wasn't supposed to show me why I'm buying a PS4. They didn't need to show N amount of exclusive games. Anybody who has been a Playstaton fan shouldn't be worried about exclusives. The one thing Sony always does right is exclusive games. See history.

All I wanted from them at Gamescom was a release date, everything else was just a plus. I already know why I'm buying a PS4, I didn't need anything else to reinforce my decision.

Lucreto4326d ago (Edited 4326d ago )

@nukeitall 2

For all we know Microsoft are front loading to make it more attractive than by the end of 2014 only living on third party titles again. They did that the the PS3. Like the PS3 has no games etc.

Then again Microsoft have no first party AAA games in well over a year. The PS3 has 4 or 5 this year. It will be a year or 2 before we get that amount of AAA games on the PS4.

God, that remote play looks awesome.

ZodTheRipper4326d ago

Definately! And after seeing it live I'm pretty positive that there won't be any noticeable input lag so I'm really looking forward to it.

TheBrit4326d ago

Not sold on whether that was "Real" or not as the first instance it showed him playing the Vita on stage, that ship was going everywhere, cannons firing like crazy etc yet his fingers barely moved if they even moved at all.

It wasn't until they showed him playing a second time the he seemed to be making movement and even then for the action going on, he was extremely timid in the button presses and stick movements - I have never played a vita so maybe you barely have to move sticks etc but I don't know, something looked slightly out of place.

The remote play, regardless if the Wii-U already has it is still a nice feature though if it works well.

TheBrit4326d ago

ack Let me correct my post. I was trying to multi-task too much.

Anyway, the last of input on the ps4 controller (not Vita like I originally stated) just did not seem natural when he was playing the game.

When it came to the Vita the game looked good for sure.

Blastoise4326d ago

Killzone Shadowfalls multiplayer looks fantastic. Apparently the DLC multiplayer maps are going to be free, which is a huuuge plus to me.

Bit disappointed about no major "Wow" Vita game, but that Murasaki Baby looks cool and I was glad to see the remote-play in action working flawlessly.

Also, people should check out the new Knack trailer, it wasn't shown at the conference but it looks a lot better than before and might renew a bit of faith in the game

Good show all round

LOGICWINS4326d ago

Duude, I think Borderlands 2 Vita is a HUUUGE announcement for Vita. As long as we get 2-3 AAA titles per year I'm good. And we still have TGS brutha! I'm predicting big localization announcements.

Blastoise4326d ago

Oh yeah Borderlands 2 was pretty cool

vigilante_man4326d ago

Just as long as it is developed to make the most of Vita's touch screen capabilities and not just a weak port.

LOGICWINS4326d ago

Will Sony post the conference to PSN? I've been trying to keep up with whats going on via smartphone but its like information overload. Looks like Sony made a ton of announcements!

Lucreto4326d ago

It will be on home and Youtube tomorrow sometime.

Bowzabub4326d ago

It's on Home right now, I'm still watching it. It started about 10 minutes after 1 for me.

Drekken4326d ago

The amount of games they showed was pretty impressive. Sure they weren't all AAA games, but that doesn't matter.

RIME was the game of the show IMO.

thomasmiller4326d ago

You mean just like the wii u???

thomasmiller4326d ago

now that the wii u has announced their big titles, the trolls still won't shut up.. the AAA titles are coming? where are they??? either put up or shut up sony!

come_bom4326d ago (Edited 4326d ago )

To many indie games, not enough AAA games. Meh conference... but still better then Microsoft's and Nintendo's no conference.

sobotz4326d ago

Even Ouya provides indies games and still failed miserably. Killzone MP so meh, nothing groundbreaking like what BF4 has shown, even Titanfall is better than that.

AngelicIceDiamond4326d ago

But just real quick didn't Sony say they'll announce 24 or 30 games at Gamescom?

I can't post lnks Im on my phone. But I could swore they said that couple months ago.

As far as the article I dunno I have mixed feelings about it. Since when does confidence a game changer?

I find it a little weird they won in by confidence. I mean its showcase not who has the most confidence.

creatchee4326d ago

Were any of you watching the same conference as I was? This was easily worse than E3, which only had the no DRM and price bombshells. I honestly was bored and left unexcited. I still want a PS4, but it's not because of anything today.

DiRtY4326d ago

That was the most rubbish press conference I have ever seen.

If you don't like indie games that have a price tag above free, there was NOTHING, I repeat NOTHING at all.

They basically confirmed the death of the PS Vita. Yeah we have the Vita, here are 3 ports of games that can be bought for $5 on Xbox 360 / PS3 and PC already and a handful of indie games. No first party support, but we cut the price...

No game announcements for the PS3 (no surprise though).

Showing off 15 indie games I can find in every appstore on every smartphone already was just embarrissing to watch. And most of them are either console exclusives or timed exclusives. "We built the most powerful console - here are games you can play on Windows 95!"

I had a chat with 2 co-workers who are PS fans and even they said this was boring and a pain to watch. Whoever is responsible for this conference needs to be fired today.

T24326d ago

Wtf are you on ? Rime looked okay, shadow , rapture , and another I forgot ... Was more than I expected . Will I buy them all ,? Hell no but it was a good conference with broad appeal like e3

JackStraw4326d ago

Oh shut up lol. I'm so sick of seeing people whine about indie games when they clearly have no understanding of what one is. "hey Sony announced plenty of games but none of them interest me cause all i play is AAA games, therefore Sony didn't show anything worth watching"

face, meet palm.

4326d ago
TheEvilWithin4326d ago

@Skips: You forgot Dragon's Crown PS3/PSV!

Chevalier4326d ago

Actually Skips missed way more than that:

Atelier Ayesha
FF X/FF X-2 HD
KH 1.5 HD
Time and Eternity
Guided Fate Paradox
FF XIV
Rain
Journey collection
MGS collection
Beyond
One Piece 2

I noticed a lot of xbox one games that aren't even coming out this year on that list so if you want to add next years stuff there's.

Witch and a hundred knights
Tales of Symphonia HD
Tales of Xillia 2 and a whole slew of RPGS from NIS/Atlus/Bandai Namco
Disgaea D2
Shonen Jump game
Saint Seiya fighter and so much more that I can't list off the top of my head.

AceBlazer134326d ago

@Chevilier is Witch and a Hundred Knights, One Piece 2, Saint Seiya and the Shounen Jump vs getting released in NA? that would be so damn awesome

NateCole4326d ago

Thanks Drekken. Time to buy another PS3.

GraveLord4326d ago

Games will come? They're already there....you can't expect Sony to blow their load this year. Their biggest IP won't launch on PS4 until holiday 2014 so why reveal them so early? We a huge collection of indie games to choose from at launch and all the big AAA 3rd party games + some great 1st party games such as Killzone and Driveclub.

The amazing thing is that Sony doesn't even need to announce Naughty Dogs next game or SSM or GG. We already know that amazing games are coming from these amazing developers. Microsoft already played their best card, Halo. Sony hasn't even started.

BallsEye4325d ago

Games will come games will come.. all the time same talk. I wan't to see that most powerfull console show most awesome games but so far just indies and KZ. Come on man =/ you guys are blind. MS is showing some awesome stuff and sony just says awesome stuff.

ZodTheRipper4326d ago (Edited 4326d ago )

I wouldn't say "trump" this time. It was packed with games but it was missing that "WOW"-announcement.
I really expected announcements from Sony's european developers ...but at least they did a conference in the first place. And Shadow of the Beast could turn out pretty huge, hopefully they have big plans with it. (in terms of budget)

Benjammin254326d ago

I thought Rime looked great too. Reminded me of ICO. Everyone has gone to the rapture looks interesting too. What people seem to forget, is that Naughty Dog and all the other developers are working on proper PS4 titles. Xbox One's launch line-up is mostly old Xbox 360 games quickly done up to look next gen.

Thatguy-3104326d ago

The last comment towards the Xbox is hilarious. Everyone picked on it which was funny. It's good that Sony stuck to their vision. This Gen they had a vision with the ps3 and stuck to it even with all the bad press. Microsoft should have done the same because now the question is whats their vision?

Convas4326d ago

MS should've stuck with a vision that 95% of Gaming's internet population said they'd never support?

Does that make sense to you? Seriously. Read that again. Does that HONESTLY make sense to you?

pompombrum4326d ago

It makes perfect sense if you're a PS fan.. everyone likes something funny to laugh at, especially when you can do it every single day.

Thatguy-3104326d ago (Edited 4326d ago )

Like many say we're eventually going to end up heading that way. What Microsoft should have done is at least show why their vision is the future and how we benefit from it. Instead of that they scrapped everything the xbox one was meant to be. Their lack of vision simply shows they have no direction to aim for and are basically just kissing a** to get gamers support again. But we'll just see how much the 180 spins helped them out.

brianunfried4326d ago

Everything about Microsoft right now seems rushed and unorganized.

PFFT4326d ago

LMFAO!!!!!!!
You should do stand up comedy.

Manic20144326d ago

There vision had to change because of the gamer outcry. Once they done all the 180's, Gamers are saying they should have stuck with there vision !?!

Hufandpuf4326d ago

Really? You Sony guys laughed at and pushed MS to changed and now you say they shouldn't have? Give me a break.

NateCole4326d ago

Since when did one person represent all PS fans?.

I am super relived that they went back on them stupid policies because it would have set a bad precedence. I was a sure way to kill gaming as we know it.

Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: Splintered Fate Co-op Review [Co-Optimus]

"A few years ago, a mobile game developer called Super Evil Megacorp had the brilliant idea of making a TMNT roguelike. After first releasing it on Apple Arcade, they wisely recognized the game’s potential on other platforms. TMNT: Splintered Fate has slowly but surely come to all major platforms, finally arriving on Xbox today. Not only is Splintered Fate a fine roguelike and co-op game, but it’s also one of the best TMNT games ever made," says Co-Optimus.

"Dodge Roll and Devolver Digital's Enter the Gungeon is a hit twin-stick shooter roguelike that debuted nearly ten years ago. Since then, it has received several DLCs and a single-player spin-off called Exit the Dungeon. Well, it seems that there's more life left in Enter the Gungeon yet.
