Kotaku Preview: Growing Up With Fallout 3

Kotaku writes: "When I saw Fallout 3 at last year's E3 I thought it looked cool but not being one of the cult of Fallout, I viewed it with the same sort of interest that I do most games I know nothing about: Curious, but not what I would call overly excited. All this changed however, this past Tuesday when I headed downtown to check out the new build of the game that Bethesda was showing off.

Everything I saw about this game was impressive, but what really got my attention was its overall art style. The optimistic fifties design juxtaposed against the destroyed landscape is a great choice and is seen everywhere from the HUD to the atomic design of Vault 101. Seeing it sprinkled around the world gave me the same feeling I got the first time I saw the art-deco wonders of BioShock. It's nostalgic yet at the same time seems so fresh and new because we rarely see that style of design in modern games, especially FPSs. It also gave the design team a chance to inject the game with a subtle humor that is evident throughout, even seeping its way into the dialog choices and sound.

The team is still on target for a release in the fall of this year but we still weren't able to wrangle a solid date out of them. One thing we did hear however, was a promise of a hands on at E3 so you can bet I will be signing up for that one."

The story is too old to be commented.

Sounds like a must buy:D

It is a must buy (Hopefully Bethesda doesn't disappoint and doesn't follow Obliv).

^^^^ Agreed and bubbles.

Morrowind was a beautiful game, Oblivion was disapointing I want to kidnap Pete Hines and make him play through it until he releases it's bad, the ignorant, pompous twazzok. Todd Howard is just as bad. They can both sit in vats of acid for all I care, infact I do care and I hope they do.

I am actually playing Morrowind currently. That how awesoem an cinematic it is. And how can you screw up your own IP? I know, fire the pivotal writer. SO how the hell can they pull off a purchased IP.

Fallout cultists, get ready to be disappoint.

I'm so with you. Thanks and bubbles for you too.

Morrowind was a superb game and I still enjoy it. Obliv in the other hand is simply disappointing even though it's a decent game, it's nothing compared to Morro and Dagger.
And Fallout... as you said, not even their own IP...

We, the members of Fallout cult WILL bring the wrath of God upon Bethesda if they screw up and will turn their offices into real wasteland.

i dont really know anything about fallout or what kind of game it is but fallout 3 looks interesting.
what kind of game is it?
by the sound of it, it sounds like an action rpg like Mass Effect.
is that right? or more rpg like final fantasy?

MK_Red3895d ago

It's neither. If anything, Fallout 3 is like RPG version of BioShock but even that is a wrong comparison.
Original Fallout 1 and 2 were rather different though. They are 2 of the best game EVER created and are considered THE best western RPGs of all time.
