PlayStation 4′s RAM (OS vs Game) Finally Explained; Flexible If Devs Working Closely w/ Sony

Jon of RealGamerNewz writes, "We recently brought you exclusive information about a second SKU being prepped for release by Sony’s PlayStation 4 team. Today we have more information which has been cleared to us by our source which is a development studio that is working on a PS4 title and prefers to go unnamed at this time (though they have provided identifying information in our original post concerning the project they are working on).

This new information will come as a pleasant surprise to many gamers who were worried about the PS4′s RAM capabilities. The RAM of PS4 will be flexible to some extent, in regard to how much is used for the Operating System and how much is used for the games themselves."

5-6GB GDDR5 RAM against 5GB DDR3 is such a huge difference it's like comparing 8 vs 5 all over again.

What are you some kind of expert? Lulz. Explain to me without citations the scientific reasons behind what you just said.

Brodo7893936d ago

Lmao no. The difference is small

ShinMaster3936d ago

So up to 6GBs of GDDR5?

Not bad at all compared to the 4.5 rumor certain people were trying to pass as fact lol

@Hitman0769

Without citation? Why would you ask for scientific reasons without peer review to support those reasons? Citations are important in science.

Agreed. Sounds like a similar setup to the PS Vita and how it will disable certain system features/functions. I'm all for that depending on the game. ANd it's still .5 GB more than what is available for the X1 so devs shouldn't have any issues with the PS4.

Still, 5.5GB of GDDR5 RAM is more than enough at this point, and I can see Sony reducing the OS RAM overhead as years go on.

Hitman07693936d ago

I don't see the need to compare it to a different game system which has yet to reveal its full structure. HHG is going to announce something soon about that other console, this is completely standalone information which is good news for PS4 devs and should not be used in some immature, silly fanboy arguments.

6/2. Good split. 7/1 would be awesome but if their os takes 2GB then it better be fluid as water. No delays or waiting at all.

Thatguy-3103936d ago

Again let it to Sony Devs to get the most out of the console. Can't wait to see what Naughty Dog does with the new tech.

Majin-vegeta3936d ago

Can someone put this in simple words??

Godchild10203936d ago

If you work with Sony you will get access to more Ram. Kinda how the PS3 worked, except it's easier and there's no cell.

Salooh3936d ago (Edited 3936d ago )

Means that 5.5GB is available for games and developers can easily use it. 512mb are buffered and must be applied for it from sony to get it because buffer is likely meant to prevent things from overflowing.

So it's 6GB GDDR5 for gaming so far. Don't forget that there is a possibility that updates will free more ram and cerny said that the ps4 is a super charged pc so more power will be available for developers in the future and why do i believe that ?. Because they did it in the ps3 :P

LaWiiG3936d ago

The hardware speaks for itself. $100 cheaper and better optimized. Hands down, great choice.

Hitman07693936d ago

Nobody was comparing lol. But okay, if you must... Personally I'm not broke so I'll have both. Mostly looking forward to indie exclusives...

You don't have to be broke to enjoy saving a $100. Smart is more like it.

It was remade last year for PC , Now released and OPTIMIZED and PORTED for/to Xbox and PS5, not “remade” just for consoles.

“it follows a critically acclaimed release on PC back in 2023” that’s because it’s the same work/game. it’s not following/follow up or a continuation. Author Sounds like they are taking a stab at an article and don’t know the product-line lineage and release history/ hierarchy they are attempting to inform you about.

More appropriately: System Shock was first rereleased in 2023 on PC, System shock is now available on PS5 and Xbox.
