Deadly Premonition and Twin Peaks comparison

PP writes: The similarities between the Twin Peaks and Deadly Premonition have been much discussed, particularly during the game's early development. As a huge fan of both the TV show and game respectively, I felt it was time for me to do a detailed analysis of the Twin Peaks quirks that might have made it into Deadly Premonition's final form. What is clear though is that - although both Twin Peaks and Greenvale share some ideas in common - what the creators did with these similar settings prove to be very different overall and of equal and commendable merit.

twin peaks was such a good show...and deadly premonition is an amazing game

While it is obvious that the director of deadly premonition borrowed heavily from twin peaks it has caused me to watch the show again. That's a good thing.

I skimmed the descriptions because I haven't played through Deadly Premonition yet, but the references to one of my favorite TV shows of all time might be enough for me to buy this game. The reviews seemed to be all over the place, but I'm probably more likely to enjoy it because I loved Twin Peaks.

It's interesting that a show from the early 90s is still so fresh in some people's minds. Recent games like Alan Wake and apparently Deadly Premonition are loaded with Twin Peaks references and influences.

dont play it, let alone buy it. watch a youtube lets play of it or something, its a really bad game. alone in the dark is a better game for gods sake... and that's a terrible game.

Ew. God no. Alone in the Dark was dreadful compared to Deadly Premonition. D:

If you can look past the clunky gameplay and outdated graphics, Deadly Premonition is a damn fine game. And I don't mean that in an ironic "so bad it's good" way. I adored the characters, the story, the atmosphere, the town, etc. Even small things (like watching people go about their daily lives and York's stubble growing over time) were fun little additions.

I do think it's a shame that so many people are so eager to write it off or call it a bad game, when it's one of the few unique and ambitious games out there this gen. The developers clearly had a vision and even though it didn't work out perfectly, there's still a charm to it that shows how much the devs cared about the story they wanted to tell. There is love behind this project.

By comparison, Alone in the Dark is a generic hackneyed mess of a game that has awful controls, repetitive puzzles, an annoying inventory system, and just isn't much fun to play (don't even get me started on the cut-to-pieces Wii version). Not everybody's going to like Deadly Premonition or be able to look past it's (many) faults, but to call it a bad game does it a disservice.

Sure, the game looks more impressive than Deadly Premonition from a graphical standpoint, but that's not saying much when everything else about the game is atrocious. I'd rather play an ugly game with a great story and characters than a pretty game with a crap story and repetitive puzzles. The fire effects are the only thing that's decent in Alone in the Dark tbh, but godawful car section that follows that fire escape is painful on so many levels.

Video Games Proud To Not Be For Everyone

Plenty of games have made a name for themselves as being proud of the fact they’re not to everyone’s taste over the years.

If you make something for everyone, you please no one.

I mean I can do without nintendo games if given the choice. They are not nearly as mature rated as the average.

Yeah but I use my Switch OLED primarily for anime booba style games (visual novels and JRPG's) and ultra violent FPS's. Far from kid friendly, lol

The problem with that line of though is that games have never been as much "for everyone" as in 2025.
The only thing that's not for everyone in gaming lately is the gatekeeping. Devs will try to appeal to as many people as they can, but if you dare have your own tastes and prefer something a bit more obscure, then you have "L takes" because at the moment, popular opinion equals right opinion.
So devs should simply own the fact they water down their games and go Hollywood to please everybody. Then indies will go back to being trendsetters that are different from AAAs, instead of being roguelike and gacha copycats.

Okay, but "games I'm not meant to love" means I won't play them.
Games are for fun. They're their own art, it's a disservice to reduce them to interactive stories. You can focus on making your audience entertained on a positive way and still stand out.

No game is for everyone. Some games are more mainstream or casual friendly but there is always someone who won’t like it. Same with anything else

It’s sooooo janky but the story is so good and the agent is so quirky I loved it thouroughly, the story is that good that you can actually make it through all of its jankiness and issues .
It’s a diamond in the rough and rough is saying lighly.
This game deserves a remake out of any game I can think of .
If they fixed the combat ,driving and movement this would be one of my favorite games all time and it already is in a way.

The first time I turned on my flashlight was one of the funniest things I have ever seen in a game. His suit just sort of lights up. There's no physical flashlight in his hand--hilarious. It's also the only game I've played to truly capture the delightfull quirkiness of Twin Peaks. I'm with you on how much I like this game. Despite all of its flaws, it's a genuinely fun experience. "My coffee warned me about it," is probably my favorite line of all time in any video game.

I still haven't played the sequel, but I will some day.

I enjoyed this back during ps3 days. I'd buy it again if they re released it fixed up a little. I had fun with it.
