WWII FPS Games Are Ready To Come Back With A Bang

CGUK:
"Ever since gaming began the Second World War was a comfortable setting in which developers based their shooting games thanks to the rich history, balanced combat and unique scenery. Since then the sub-genre has undergone huge alterations to make it stand out"

WW2 games are the most balanced fps games in my opinion. No modern day lock on, fire and forget garbage. Weapons from that time period took skill to use.

Today's military technology does make it difficult to keep multiplayer balanced. It is possible to have a well-balanced modern FPS though, CoD4 and BF2 are proof of that. The balance problems start when you add too much stuff in your game, like customizable killstreaks, deathstreaks, ridiculous melee lunging, multiple perk levels, etc.

I for one want a wide variety of FPS next gen. Give me WWII, modern that isn't in the middle east, near future, distant future, cyberpunk, steampunk, traditional sci fi, hell I'd even take a sci fantasy shooter.

This gen the shooter market was flooded with modern fps games, and most of them were generic or cod clones. I also want to see real innovation in FPS multiplayer.

Yeah except for Activision/Treyarch would never take aim assist out of there games.

Red Orchestra 1 & 2 have been here and are easily the best WW2 shooters ever and will challenge any FPS for best shooter period.

As far as tactics and difficulty Red Orchestra is top notch. May not have all the Bells an Whistles as other shooters but R.O. is just flatout a Hardcore Shooter that requires PURE SKILL.

No killstreaks No perks No loadout bonus no auto aim/aim assist nothing but Pure skill and talent.

I love shooting fools hiding behind wood fences. Like that white picket fence is gonna stop a slug from a Sturmgewehr 44! LOL

Right on the money! RO is an awesome game!

Sounds good, how rich is the community? Is it teeming with life or fairly empty?
Do I need a powerful PC to run it?

FragGen3920d ago (Edited 3920d ago )

I'd say there is definitely room in the genre for a solid WW2 IP even though it is not my personal cup of tea. I honestly like the modern settings still.

I could see myself getting stoked for a new fantasy fps ala Heretic/Hexen of old. Or a horror shooter ala quake. Heck, an Old West FPS with RPG elements could be AWESOME.

Yep... FPSs definitely could use some branching out.

I'd be fine if it didn't have an online mode. I just want the feeling of something like storming the beach at Normandy in Saving Private Ryan. Something that makes it feel like it's life or death. Anything along the lines of Flags of our Fathers and Iwo Jima. Or it could be based on the battle from We Were Soldiers, being outnumbered and stranded with the only reinforcements coming from 3 helicopters every few hours.

Next gen is the perfect time to do it. Going to use Ryse as an example, just because of how well done the assault on the beach looked.

Medal of Honor Allied Assault for the PC was one of the best WWII shooters out there. They nailed the storming of Normandy beach perfectly.

i'd like to game in wars from 60's-70's too

Neonridr3920d ago (Edited 3920d ago )

not too many games set during that time period. Battlefield: Vietnam stands out in my mind.

desertpunk863920d ago

get the hell out of here did you not own a ps1,ps2,xbox hell even the 360 and ps3.

since 1999 there has been more than 80 ww2 fps games released through out 3 generations and that's not counting the rts genera.

i am sick and tired of ww2 and i hope i never get to experience the ww2 fps boom again.

im still waiting for that modern combat shooter fever to go away and for the sci fi shooter fever to begin.

i cant wait until i get my hands on titanfall and destiny.

Neonridr3920d ago

@desertpunk86 - did you read the original poster's comment? the 60's and 70's were not WW2. World War II ended in 1945.

xc7x3919d ago (Edited 3919d ago )

@ Neonridr

might not of been a lot of "games" in that era but there were a few real wars then, don't mean I want continuation of previous games [as follow-up's]in that era but do want new games based in that time frame.

@ desertpunk86

you have every right to avoid them but not everyone agrees with your opinion here obviously.

evilsooty3920d ago

If you are into WW2 games give Red Orchestra 2 a go which is set in and around Stalingrad. It's had an expansion recently set in the Pacific, Rising Storm.

evilsooty3920d ago

Yep - I play Rifleman exclusively and there is something incredibly satisfying about shooting someone from over 150 yards with one shot and them going down like a sack of potatoes :)

A great game.

Jury3920d ago

I'd love another ww2 game. They are really the only fps I like and what got me to even play the genre
