Nintendo Files For A New Eternal Darkness Trademark, Mentions “Downloadable”

Nintendo of America recently filed for a brand new Eternal Darkness trademark with the United States Patent and Trademark Office, which has led to speculation that the publisher might be looking to do something new with the classic GameCube title.

HD remake perhaps? Or maybe Virtual Console upload? Reintroducing this IP might be a good way to get a true sequel off the ground. Just a thought. I never got to play this one and everyone says what a great gem it was, so I'm interested in trying it out.

Nintendo did say back in January's Direct that they were looking into bringing Gamecube games to the Wii U VC. Releasing Eternal Darkness as one of the first VC Gamecube games would be fantastic.

I don't remember hearing that... I'd better go rewatch the Direct(s) in January.

If we go by how Earthbound was handled, I don't think it will be a launch game for the GCN VC. They will definitely pioneer the feature with it though. We'll see what happens.

Totally with you on your theories. You covered them all. It would be a prime opportunity to bring out an HD remake or downloadable version on the Wii U eShop to gain interest in the successor that was announced on Kickstarter.

I still have my copy on the GameCube, but it would be nice to not have to unplug and replug in my consoles to get it to play on my TV, haha... I've been pondering getting an old TV for my room dedicated to my original Xbox, Dreamcast, GameCube, and any other crazy consoles I decide to get over the next few decades! :p

Sorry, back on-topic, Eternal Darkness is an amazing game. I would almost say it was groundbreaking for the time, actually. The Sanity thing... just amazing. <3 I sure hope they bring out an HD remaster or something.

The way things have been going on Kickstarter, that might be the only way this game gets made.

If Precursor gives up it's PC ambitions maybe it will happen.

That's exactly what I was thinking.... It hasn't exactly been hot on kickstarter. If Nintendo got up and tried to make this happen by paying for developments and such, they could not only make this game live up to its potential, but they can make it a real sequel, and fill a gap in their repertoire of genres. That would really help to broaden the Wii U's demographic.

I have been hopeful for a Virtual Console release since the Wii U was announced, so this is exciting indeed.

Would definitely buy a VC re-release, the wii u's ghost town of an eshop needs to expand already. Hopefully companies like capcom and namco will also bring their gamecube titles to the eshop.

So shadow of the eternals is unliscenced or what? Now i see it could come to ps4... but an official sequel wouldnt be able to as nintendo owns the rights.

Monolith Soft could make a great sequel to the title.

Compared to their Xenoblade titles the environments would be like nothing.
Plus, their Spirit Camera/Fatal Frame titles shows that they can be creepy.

Too Bad that SK (Precursor) and Nintendo aren't still together however.

Anyway, a HD version of this game would be a great surprise for 2014's E3 too.

An hd remake of eternal darkness would be awesome! I remember cussing the game because it tricked me into thinking all my game data had been erased lol. It truly was a game ahead of its time with elements I've never seen elsewhere in rpg games. Nintendo would be wise to fund the sequel and make it an exclusive. I enjoyed the game so much i think ppl would buy a wii u to play it because it has a following to this day. Off topic im getting a wii u basic this weekend. I've seen alot of indie games and titles coming that i think im really gonna enjoy the wii u. I played my cousins black wii u and all i can say is...."wow". After playing hands on with it i see what nintendo was trying to do. The gamepad is excellent imho and feels alot more comfortable than it looks. You really have to try the wii u before you judge it. That means a few hours at a friends house and not at a demo station it way different. Assassins creed 4 and cod ghosts are games im glad will be coming to nintendo. Im buying both in hopes that if we embrace and buy third party content then more will come. Id love to see gta5 on wii u but im not sure if thats gonna happen. If you want an unbiased opinion then listen to me and give the wii u a chance. I dont always agree with nintys old fashioned ways, but it really is a unique system and the gamepad has tons of potential if developers just try and be creative and really utilize it. This is all my opinion of course but i believe a ps4 and wii u will be the way to go this gen. Great ps exclusives and nintendos great first party ips is a win win combo i think. Then again if you love gaming like i do its a win win situation on any console or pc as long as theres great games to play.

I'm not going to get my hopes up. Nintendo has made it a routine over the years of renewing the Eternal Darkness trademark and has shown nothing to this day. At least Precursor Games is actually making a Eternal Darkness like game while Nintendo just seems to flirt with the idea. I'd welcome Eternal Darkness on VC if it were released however despite still owning the original GCN disk.

I agree about not getting hopes up, but this time is a little different. It is not just renewing the old trademark, this is an entirely new trademark with some added language.

Still, it is best not to get too worked up until something is announced.

you know what's sad? that i never got to play this game... bummer...

i've seen the vids in YouTube, and I must say, setting aside the visuals when compared with todays games, the game is interesting and looks good, and would have loved to play the game. their approach for a horror game is also good. and i know everyone who loves the game will agree how much this could work now on the Wii U, with the HD graphics, the gamepad and/or the different controllers.

if nintendo decides to think out of the box, this could be a good game that will make use of multiple controllers; they can have a mixed use of the game pad and wii remote.
