Review: Hyperdimension Neptunia Victory (New Gamer Nation)

From the minds at Compile Heart and Idea Factory comes the third game in the Hyperdimension Neptunia series, Hyperdimension Neptunia Victory. For those unfamiliar with the series, it follows four goddesses who each serve as a representation of one of the four major video game console manufacturers: Nintendo, Sony, Microsoft and Sega. Each goddess wants to rule Gameindustri for themselves, and the game follows the struggle between the goddesses. While this premise sounds interesting, the Hyperdimension Neptunia games fail to deliver a solid gaming experience. There was always something that brought the games down, whether it was an awkward quest system or cheesy dialogue. While Victory is arguably the best game in the series to date, it doesn’t manage to break away from what has been plaguing the series all along.

Reading the review and seeing the problems you mentioned, i think the game deserves at least a 7 based on your review.

The Quest system really was a major "game breaking" problem for me. I try not to let one aspect of the game dominate the review as problems tend to do in other reviews. I let the score of the game speak for the value as I see it while delivering a more balanced approach to the critique as a whole. It seems to me that just because one issue is terrible that the rest of the game doesn't matter. Reviews today tend to zero in on one issue or downplay the rest of the game just because of a big issue somewhere else. It may sound that I was more positive on the game because outside of the quest system, the game was good. However, when you factor in the quest system, it breaks the game for me and I feel the score reflects that.

I hope this gives you some insight as to why I wrote the review the way I did.

Hyperdimension Neptunia Victory – Enter the Dominatrix

Gary Green said: The concept for a good sequel is not a complicated thing. You take your original idea and expand on the lore, then you fix anything that was broken the first time around. You might want to introduce some new features too; This is fine so long as you don’t go overboard, and you don’t change the overall flow of the game. Hyperdimension Neptunia Victory ticks all of these boxes, so surely then it should be the perfect package? Well, almost. It really is rather good.

A concise history of Hyperdimension Neptunia

Michibiku's Jenni Lada writes, "Hyperdimension Neptunia is huge. It’s a massive series that covers tons of games, all of which are sort of connected? Though also not really, because quite a few are spin-offs and non-canon. It’s a lot to take in, to be sure. With Megadimension Neptunia VII on the horizon, we here at Michibiku felt like we should offer an overview of the main series’ installments."
