The 10 Best Video Game Intros: Part 2

So which video game intros are the greatest of all time? Before I answer this politically explosive question, my definition of “intro” must be clear. I am defining a video game intro as any cinematic segment before or after the title screen that sets up a narrative and/or establishes a tone or theme. Also, the title screen itself may be an important part of an intro, as I will explain in some of my choices. Finally, no gameplay is allowed in my definition of intro. If the gamer, as opposed to the director, controls the direction of the segment, the effect is interactional, not cinematic. It’s the simple difference between viewing and playing.

Fallout and Skyrim show us that talented developers make great games when you leave them alone

That judicious lack of oversight permeated everything in Bethesda's RPGs, in a positive fashion.

I much prefer a left alone Obsidian and Larian Studios. Bethesda's formula has grown old for me.

anast11d ago

Larian hit another level with DOS:2 and then took it even further with BG3. They do high quality work.

Skyrim was a letdown compared to previous games and so was Fallout 4

Kosic11d ago

I agree, I found it an interesting game. But nowhere near worth the hype (unless you include mods)

Skyrim blew my mind when it released. That game took me to the gaming, promisedland. Going back to it when it was updated for the PS5, it felt slightly rough around the edges, but great for its time

We should leave Obsidian alone. Bethesda on the other hand should be kept under constant psychiatric observation.

Skyrim feels like the game was made in a hurry with a disorganized team.

Surprised Agro (Shadow of the Colossus) didn't make the cut.

I knew he wouldn't make this list, but I do have a soft spot for Cheeseburger from FarCry 5.

Honorable Mention: Roach (Witcher 3).

The original NES game is still.one of the hardest games I've almost beaten in my life I believe I was on the second final boss using original hardware and carts no save states but I could never finish it

Man, I finally braved trying Master Ninja in Ninja Gaiden 2 Black and… man, I suck, lol. I really want to try for the platinum because I love the game so much, but yeesh…

Tacoboto90d ago

I remember Ninja Gaiden Black and how awesome the hype and support was around for that. The changes from the base game and the world rankings we could check out in the menus. Played through the OG game once and Black at least twice.

Never played the original 2D games but I'm excited to go through 2 Black soon.

I was there as a young boy playing the first Ninja Gaiden in The arcade. It was awesome for the time! I’ve played every one skins and on every one of those systems. And here I am, as a 50 year old man giddy with joy playing through the most recent release, with more on the way! Heck yeah it’s a great series!
