5 Most Under-Appreciated Games Of This Console Generation

There have been a number of widely acclaimed and commercially successful titles this gaming generation – but there have also been releases that got only a fraction of the recognition they deserved.

With the next-gen just a few months away, Dan Jenko picks out five great games that were criminally under-appreciated.

Interesting article. I would have included Earth Defense Force 2017. Shooting legions of giant ants, spiders, and robots was awesome, not to mention the corny dialogue and easy demolition of buildings.

I'd never heard of this game before. Just looked it up now and it seems really cool. As I understand it, general consensus among critics was that it had terrible graphics and cheesy presentation, but was actually brilliant fun?

Think I might have to check this one out.

Yeah, the game definitely has some technical flaws, but they remarkably make the game more fun. One thing I really like about the game is its simplicity. You get to the title screen, and all you have to is select one player or two players. No signing in, no sub-menus, no bullshit.

And I highly recommend going co-op.

the cheese is what makes it worth playing. EDF 2017 has a pretty good review on classic game room on youtube.

There is an EDF 2025 sequel but it isnt due out for several months. you can get 2017 version for dirt cheap at gamestop. I picked it up complete w/case and manual for $6

I dunno about EDF 2017, but it looked fun; I thought Warhammer (40k) Space Marine was a good gem. The single player was way longer that I thought it would be, the story was good, the fighting was very good throughout the game (final boss was a little meh, but it didn't ruin the game).

None of the games listed are all that "underrated". Undersold? Sure. But not underrated.

Except for Spec Ops, all of these games have a mid-80s metascore or higher. Specs Ops The Line has a very devoted cult following.

Truly underrated games - as in, games UNDER rated - would be stuff like The Last Remnant, which was an incredibly in-depth game with several unfortunate design flaws or Baten Kaitos (same devs who did Xenoblade Chronicles) or Resonance of Fate or Rise of the Argonauts or Dokapon Kingdom.

But it's 'under-appreciated' - not underrated. In other words, the games on this list may well have been critically acclaimed, but weren't as widely played as they should have been.

DanJenkoFMV2559d ago

I suppose 'under-rated' is distinct from 'under-appreciated' in that to say a game is under-rated would imply you think critics should have awarded it with more praise.

To me, 'under-appreciated' implies some kind of critical acclaim that didn't translate to strong sales or any kind of legacy.

Might check that one out. Nothing wrong with a bit of corny dialogue!

Good list, I would also add Bulletstorm and Rage

I agree strongly with Spec Ops. That game was awesome and it's too bad it didn't get the exposure that it deserved. I would never have played it if it hadn't been for PS+, and I'm glad I did.

I disagree strongly with LA Noire. That one was a snooze-fest.

DanJenkoFMV2559d ago

I agree L.A. Noire had issues (a few of which I flagged up in the article), but I also found it to be thoroughly enjoyable. And, more importantly when looking at it in the context of the whole generation, it feels like a game that really moved the industry forward.

What did you feel was boring about it?

Philoctetes2558d ago

Honestly I thought everything about the game was boring. Searching for evidence was just an exercise in point-and-click. Interrogating suspects was sort of random. The action sequences felt completely forced. And the story was even boring.

I like story-based games -- The Walking Dead, The Last of Us, Heavy Rain, etc. This one just didn't do it for me. Maybe it's just me though.

I don't think Rayman Origins belongs on there. It was on several platforms. I heard Singularity was also good.

mydyingparadiselost2559d ago

Singularity was good but it was SHORT. Like 4-5 hours kinda short and after the fact there was no real reason to play it again which is a shame since the time manipulation of items was a great idea.

_FantasmA_2559d ago

Cool. I may give it a shot since it should be cheap by now. Thats the same way I feel about Uncharted games too. Here's hoping next gen can get rid of these linear games. At the very least if a game is going to be linear, make it extremely long like Half Life. That game took me 2 weeks to beat it and I savored every moment.

kneon2559d ago

I think they are over appreciating vanquish. I got it free and played it for about 30 minutes before I got too bored to continue. I've never touched it again.

_FantasmA_2559d ago

I didn't like it either :( And TPS are my favorite kind of shooters. Its the controls. I hate the shooting mechanics/reticules/controls. Binary Domain has the same problem.
