Are the next-gen Xbox One and PlayStation 4 ‘downgrades’?

Millions upon millions of gamers around the world are crawling out of their skin waiting for Microsoft and Sony’s next-generation video game consoles to launch, but according to some plugged-in tech industry executives, the Xbox One and PlayStation 4 are actually a “downgrade.” Forbes recently spoke with executives from fabless chip makers AMD and Nvidia about the upcoming consoles set to launch ahead of the holidays this year, and both companies seem to share a common position: The Xbox One and PlayStation 4 are great machines, but they’re nothing compared to PC gaming.

iGAM3R-VIII4354d ago (Edited 4354d ago )

People keep saying how when you compare these consoles to a PC, they suck and PC always is better and all of that stuff. BUT in my opinion, they are not.

For example the architecture in the consoles such as the PS4 are more advanced than the PC since they have to upgrade it and alter the GPU, CPU, and other features and components. This is why the consoles actually highly differ from PC's.

It is just the way that consoles are built and set up that makes it better than the PC. They are built JUST for gaming unlike the PC.

Also there is an article saying:

"PS4′s Architecture Offers More Customisation Than PC, Says Cerny"

This shows how infact the PS4's design is better than the PS4 which makes them highly differ.

Dobgamers4354d ago

Not only that, both consoles have "long term GPUs", and their biggest game battlefield 4 is running easily at 1080p60fps on both consoles, and that's one of their first games, imagine 2-3 years after

Witcher developer said that both consoles are like highend PCs

iGAM3R-VIII4354d ago

Agreed, infact I hear that term a lot now, "these next-gen consoles are like high-end PC's now". And I can't disagree with them on that because they are right

Muerte24944354d ago (Edited 4354d ago )

PC will always be faster than consoles because they usually release a new version of graphics cards annually. PC is all about raw power. PC brute forces most games running with very little need for optimization. But PC gamers thinking that they can build a budget PC matching the performance of consoles are insane. A PC, and I repeat, cannot beat consoles in price/performance. Anything you're throwing out there is only theoretical and cannot be proven.

iGAM3R-VIII4354d ago

@above agreed, the price to power ratio is better on a console than a PC

Battlefield 4 confirmed as native 1080p on both consoles?

That's news to me. In fact all we have heard is unconfirmed reports that it would be 720p. When they say it'll actually be 1080p native on both machines come back please?

I want to see the line in the press/interview that says Battlefield 4 will be native 1080p. Not 'aiming' or 'targeting'- direct confirmation.

These consoles are not like high end PCs. A high end PC has a GPU and a CPU at least twice as fast as what is in either console.

This wasn't possible when Xbox 360 launched. Xbox 360 WAS like a high end PC in 2005. Its GPU performance was comparable to a high end PC card that would have cost at least £250. PC hardware twice as fast didn't even exist- but it does already compared to PS4/Xbone and these consoles aint even launched yet.

These next gen machines are using less than cutting edge hardware compared to consoles from generations past. You can buy a GPU far faster and advanced than those in PS4/Xbone, something you couldn't do when X360 launched.

PC hardware will always be more expensive for the same performance. But you can hand pick your own components. Bonus.

PC games will always be cheaper than console games though. Next gen games are looking more expensive than ever before. These consoles also REQUIRE you to pay for online. There is no escaping this.

Overall lifetime cost the gap is not nearly as much as some people would like you to believe.

PC = expensive hardware
Consoles = more expensive running cost

Saying that, Microsoft want 429 quid for their new console here, 40 quid to play online, and 50 quid for a launch game it seems.

You're stumping up over 500 quid to play one game on that console initially. Spending 800 quid on a decent gaming PC seems pretty decent value this day and age considering that!

christian hour4354d ago (Edited 4354d ago )

Its funny, it's like the guy that wrote this article just discovered what a PC is and in his excitement passed over some very important details.

Games made on PC have to be optimized to work on a vast variation of CPU's and GPU's etc.

The innards of a console does not change during it's lifespan (though smaller variations will release over time)so a dev can focus on its game knowing that the hardware in every ps4 or xboxone will be the same, so they can squeeze as much out of the hardware as possible.

What this essentially means is we are going to see graphic fidelity on nex gen consoles that we havent seen much of on PCs yet, and that mainly comes down to lowest common denominator.

The video game climate is too risky to develop for just one console or just on pc, so a lot of games that have been on pc/360/ps3 has been made with the weakest console in mind, with little graphical features turned on here and there for PC (better lighting, AA, render distance etc).

Even PC exclusives, although amazing looking, aren't as good as they can be if you have a 3gb gpu and 16gb ram and an i7. investing in new technology before its become the norm can be pricey, and again no devs are willing to take that risk, not since Crysis in 2005/2006? (when did that come out again? :P )

With nex gen the PC "master race" will finally be free of the shackles of this gen, and within a year PC will be leaps beyond what the ps4 and xboxone are doing, but then it will stagnate again and we'll be seeing highly polished multiplats on pc again, and then a new gen will arrive... and it repeats.

It always repeats.

If you've been through one or two gens, you've been through em all.

At the end of the day, pc's and consoles have their pros and cons. If I was made of money I would play my games this way...

Consoles for exclusives

PC for multiplats and PC Exclusives.

I for one cannot wait for my nex gen console experience,
and even If I never get a 3gb GPU and 16gb ram or an amd quad core or an i7 what have you,
i still cannot wait to see the power in that hardware finally get put to use in pcs :)

@Computersaysno thats not entirely true, 360 and ps3 did not have high end PC components in them from that time frame. Thats a joke, if that was the case, 360 and ps3 would have at least 2gb ram in them, not the laughable 512mb they have. A high end 3-4gb GPU alone will set you back 900 quid last time I checked. Also If I was to build a pc with the spec of a ps4 or xboxone (minus DDR5 Ram, since you cant buy that outside of GPU's for a pc as far as im aware) it would cost me only 300 or so.

Autodidactdystopia4353d ago

I would also like to add to this little snafu you got goin here.

Last time I checked Intel was WIPING the floor with amd chips.

like an order of magnitude in terms of performance gap.

amd made all of the core components in the new boxes.

don't you think that amd would be "back in the game" If their hardware was actually an upgrade from current pc tech?

Amd is failing hard right now posting billions in losses just this last year...
but this new console deal is set to keep them in the game for another decade.

don't fool yourself into believing that any fancy new "hyper transport bus" is gonna change that, let alone their apu garbage.

They Cannot beat intel; boy trust me they have tried. everything they come out with cough cough "4ghz hypertransport speeds" (communication between the processor and north bridge) does anything to stop intels crazy godlike climb up the performance ladder.

so how does a company that is barely able to keep up with the competition who was forced to go the bargain route and sell dirt cheap chips for rock bottom prices go about convincing the world that somehow because their chips are now in consoles that they are better than a pc? regardless of how customizable they are?

fact of the matter is that both ms and sny went to the lowest bidder and made the best boxes they could.

still you don't gotta lie to kick it...

GrownUpGamer4353d ago

commenting that a console is better than a Gaming-PC prove that all you know is about consoles and Console a vs console b.

PC will always be the better option for better quality graphics... DEAL with it.

They are giving you a PS4 for 400 now BUT you can't UPGRADE the CPU, GPU or RAM. The reality is that right now you can enjoy better graphics than those shown on PS4 and Xbox One on a PC for gaming.

http://www.youtube.com/watc...

The AMD FX-8350 Vishera 8-Core CPU destroy both consoles cpu.

Gaming1014353d ago

lol what a stupid article, if you have PC then you'll probably be spending $1000 on your next graphics card upgrade or whatever, if you're buying a console it's probably because you bought the last gen console and want to upgrade.

Really, you can't build a PC for $399 that runs games as well as the PS4 does, you just can't even if you build it yourself.

awi59514353d ago

The witcher games look great but they are made in direct x 9.

awi59514353d ago

Yes but there is no way these consoles can do complex physics/particle effects and A.I without making compromises. IM sorry but Pc cpus that are far more powerful than whats in these consoles so i dont believe them at all A.I and physics will be held back by those cpus unless they nerf PC effects just because of the console versions.

Consoles are no longer built just for gaming, though. Also, since when do we not have PCs built for gaming?

Back to the article: it's kind of weird that it immediately compares the new systems to PCs and then declares that the systems are "downgrades." Clearly, it's illogical to talk about these systems in terms of "upgrading" or "downgrading" if you don't even mention the 360 or PS3. But that's just my take.

iGAM3R-VIII4354d ago

Actually a consoles main function is for gaiming, you wouldn't buy a PS4 just to watch a movie would you? Or buy an X1 just to go on Skype? I'm I right?

There are many PC's built for gaming but they are not mainly built for gaming. You can browse the web and listen to music as well which the same goes for a console but games are a priority for a console.

FateoftheGame4354d ago

No, I personally wouldn't buy a gaming system for those things, but some people seem to like the television options of the Xbox One as much as they do the gaming possibilities. I do see your point, so thanks for the clarification.

Jaqen_Hghar4354d ago

this is a man's comparison. If a console is significantly more powerful than its predecessor than it is an upgrade and worthy of "next gen" labels. The WiiU is more powerful than Wii by a wide margin. The Xbone and PS4 are more powerful than their predecessors by a wide margin. They are all next gen. End of discussion.

HugoDrax4353d ago

@iGAM3R-VIII

"you wouldn't buy a PS4 just to watch a movie would you? Or buy an X1 just to go on Skype? I'm I right"

Actually most consumers would. As it's exactly what a small percentage of consumers decided. The PS3 was the more affordable option for purchasing a bluray player. I believe the difference was approximately $400 in savings. It was the option my mother in law chose at the time, and I'm sure she wasn't the only one.

but the reality is that PC make up for it with pure brute power alone, so at the end, if you care so much about graphics then PC is the best option.

FateoftheGame4354d ago

Yeah, this statement is undeniably true for diehard graphics fans.

For me? Gameplay > Everything Else.

Henjin4354d ago

^ Agree. Gameplay is more important than graphics. However, why not having both? And if you don't care about graphics then why would you care about next-gen console?

JsonHenry4354d ago

The only real difference between the consoles and the PC is the unified memory set up. The CPU and GPU in both systems are downgraded and underclocked off the shelf PC parts.

And there is NOTHING wrong with that fact. Of course PCs offer better visuals and more flexibility. It will always be that way. But the guy nailed it on the head when he said that consoles have a place for those that want more simplicity and don't care if their games scale up over time instead of just minor improvement over the life of the console unlike a PC.

I will own all the systems. (minus WiiU)

jeffgoldwin4354d ago

"those that want more simplicity"

It's perceived simplicity and outdated stereotyping of pc gaming. There's zero difference between pulling up my steam account vs playing a game on psn/live. Heck you can use your console controllers on the pc and hdmi it right over to you tv.

It's all plug & play nowadays.

JsonHenry4354d ago

I agree, Jeff. People don't realize how much of the PC is instal and go now days. Yes people still have some problems but for the most part things like Steam and Origin keep your game up to date and in the case of steam even keeps your AMD drivers up to date for you.

ProjectVulcan4354d ago (Edited 4354d ago )

These consoles aren't 'more advanced' than a gaming PC. They have some fettled hardware inside them, but basically, the main components are PC developed hardware. Unlike PS3 which had a very unique CPU, or Xbox 360 which had a totally custom GPU, these new consoles are literally cut down gaming computers in a box.

The CPU is x86 in them- this is just a slightly custom version of a part designed for mobile computing on a windows platform. That is, its primary market was always intended to be the PC space....x86 has been around for over 30 years.

The memory is DDR3 or GDDR5- both memory specifications were created to power personal computers, be it low latency system memory, or high bandwidth graphics memory. Both have been around for at least 5 years commercially.

Lastly the GPUs are derived virtually entirely from an AMD developed architecture that debuted in the PC space something like 18 months ago.

Consoles aren't built JUST for gaming anymore- I thought that blatantly obvious when Microsoft barely even spoke about gaming in their launch and Sony push multimedia very hard as well.

A new games console is just this- a slightly customised, more heavily packaged personal computer with a fixed platform, closed development environment in a specifically designed box.

Its cheaper because of this, but its also less powerful.

Please don't delude yourself thinking that makes their setup superior to up to date PC hardware- a platform for which they owe virtually their entire innards to!

JsonHenry4354d ago

I am extremely excited about the Sony PS4. But no one should delude themselves into thinking that either console is an "upgrade" to the PC.

The CPU and GPU in both systems are cripled PC parts that came out anywhere from 1-1 1/2 years ago. Which will be 2-2 1/2 years by the time the consoles launch.

Will the consoles be awesome? YES! But not because they are an "upgrade" from the PC.

Deividas4354d ago

Omg finally someone who KNOWS what hes talking about! Its so frustrating constantly hearing "oh i just bought a ps4 so now it beats your pc" i just got myself a $500 graphics card which will be obsolete in a few years and will have to upgrade again. You cant possibly think, even if you know nothing about pc components, that a ps4 is better graphically. Am i excited for the new gen console? Hell yea, also preordered a ps4. But def a nice read vulcan :)

s45gr324354d ago

That is just pr talk, am I the only that sees consoles no longer utilizing a propetiary architecture. X86 architecture has been the PC standard since the eighties. Both the xbox one and PS4 use x86 architecture how is that different or better than what the PC offers. Second last time I checked AMD is not owned by Microsoft or Sony meaning Sony and Microsoft are no longer making custom cpus/gpus like this generation. Instead AMD is providing the hardware not only that but is an APU not CPU. An APU was designed for laptops not gaming PC.

3-4-54353d ago

I just built a $500 PC and it's about as good as a PS4, maybe slightly worse GPU as I got the AMD 7770.

So really what your getting is console and PC style games, for a reduced price, with a good graphics card 8Gb of ram which is 16X more than we currently have now on Ps3/360.

These consoles are only upgrades. That and nothing else. I love my PC for games like Age of Empires and Total war and some FPS games, but you can't do all the same stuff on PS4 as you can on PC and the other way around as well.

Both are needed. We need diversity.

What does a smartphone website know about consoles?
All the articles they put out seem to downplay consoles.
Just look at the main tabs (example) on the site, it's laughable.

It turns out they were getting slammed that a mod needs to approve your comment now.

CrossingEden4354d ago

nice ad hominem, really makes your point valid -_-

MrTrololo4354d ago

No however they dont have that major leapt like PS1 to PS2 does

dcj05244354d ago

Bethesda said the ps4/X1 are like high-end pc.

jeffgoldwin4354d ago (Edited 4354d ago )

So consoles can do resolutions of 2500x1900 then?

JsonHenry4354d ago

On 3 monitors in stereoscopic 3D?

dcj05244354d ago

Yup. But the graphics will suffer a bit. ( instead of ultra maybe high or medium-high.)

s45gr324354d ago

No but in the next five years probably.

jeffgoldwin4354d ago (Edited 4354d ago )

Not in 5 years, not even close. Unless in 5 years another console gen releases. This gen gunna struggle to have quality 1080p with all the juicy effects, let alone higher than that. But almost everyones current tv or screen is maxed at 1080p anyways, so that a good resolution at this point in time for consoles.

"Someone said something negative about PC gaming??...

AnteCash4354d ago

Consoles always punch above its weight.

Imagine playing TLOU, GT6 , GTA5 on a comparable PC from 2006.

the_hitman30004354d ago

HA I bet and 06 computer wouldn't run GTA 4 good either I know it was a bad port but I'm just saying

JsonHenry4354d ago

I ran Crysis on high settings with a PC built in late 2006. And the original crysis looked better than anything AnteCash stated.

But the comparison isn't fair and should stop. Of course the PC is better. It will always be that way. And as a console gamer you should be happy for this fact because the PC keeps pushing the graphics ahead further and further so the next generation of video games has an even bigger leap in quality and abilities. It is a win-win for everyone really.

Imagine what small upgrades new consoles would be if companies only worried about putting out new hardware every 6-9 years instead of every 6-9 months like it is on the PC. We would just now be getting Dreamcast quality hardware if it were not for the ever fast evolving PC landscape.

sorane4354d ago

My old pc from 2006 ran gta4 just fine as I'm sure it'd run those other games at ps3 resolution and settings. You guys/girls forget our versions are running at much higher settings/resolutions initially. Not hard to run many games at a sub 720p resolution with low textures and no aa....

Thank you for using the term "region" since that was always what happened. The amount of media that used the term country led to many misinformed people.
