Wii U Still Has an Edge This Generation

GenGAME writes: "If Nintendo continues to pursue its strengths – that is, if they make sure the gamers they’ve pleased in generations past aren’t neglected, all the while seeking out new players by introducing new “Nintendo”-like IP – Wii U will be just fine. And that’s how it should be. No one else in the industry has made as strong an effort to give those gamers – in particular, gamers who are more interested in just having fun than in graphics, generations, or gamerscores – the first-class attention they deserve."

A caveat to this article: Wii U has an edge... Nintendo just needs to actually follow through with the "let's capture classic gaming fans and use motion controls/GamePad in a meaningful way" ideal going forward.

That, of course, is no guarantee.

PopRocks3594364d ago

It would be pretty jarring if Nintendo made such a huge turn-around that Wii U did better than PS4/Xbox One. But at this stage it's pretty unlikely.

I think they should just aim for whatever success they can achieve and get some games that will attract audiences. Pull a 3DS and get people to want this thing. Having an exclusive Atlus game (Shin Megami Tensei x Fire Emblem) may help, as will the exclusive Sonic coming this year. Games, games, games. And marketing. And obviously a price cut somewhere down the line.

legendoflex4364d ago

That depends. Nintendo may not be seeing much customer loyalty at this phase, but what makes you think Xbox/PlayStation will?

PopRocks3594364d ago

@legendoflex

Just the general vibe. I don't know anyone who isn't buying one of the two but more than enough people who are either on the fence on Wii U or are not interested altogether.

PS4 seems to have the greatest chance of success and Xbox One still has a shot to beat its current reputation. It ain't over until these consoles are on the market for at least a few years. I'll be very surprised if they, especially the PS4, don't sell at least at what is expected.

Parapraxis4364d ago

PopRocks359, man you rock.
You almost always share my sentiment.
As a WiiU owner I really want the system to succeed.
I just hope they can get their s**t together and give me some quality games sooner than later!

LOL_WUT4364d ago

Nintendo needs a lot of catching up to do, the WiiU is almost a year and they have done absolutely nothing to use that time to their advantage. ;)

Well it's edge is the best exclusives in the industry Zelda,Metroid,Mariokart,Smash,
ect,and the gamepad features are easy to market ie Splinter cell Blacklist's GAMEPAD features, compared to ps4's or xbox ones, even Ubisoft said it's hard to market ps4/xbox1's advantages over ps3 and 360 ???

Then you have that big ? mark is it worth owning a ps4 or xbox1 just for the odd graphical/AI advantage over ps3 ect ?? when you can get a graphical/AI advantage on wiiu but with added cool interaction's ??

3-4-54363d ago

They still have yet to release 4 games that will sell 5+ million copies and 1-2 million Wii U's.

They need games. End of story.

LOGICWINS4364d ago

Not just games. New IPs that get people excited!

The_Truth_24_74364d ago

A sharp edge that it can put it's throat on and decapitate itself.

Ninte4364d ago

Nintendo didn't market it very well but it's got a shot at success this holidays

Super Mario Odyssey Turns Seven - Ranking the 3D Mario Games

VGChartz's Mark Nielsen: "With the Switch getting on in years and the prospect of a new Nintendo console growing closer, now seems like an excellent time to take a look back at one of its mascot’s two big evolutionary lines, particularly since we now find ourselves in the longest wait ever between 3D Mario games. Today marks the seven year anniversary for the release of Super Mario Odyssey, and with no full new entry in sight, it comfortably beats the roughly six year wait between Super Mario 64 and Super Mario Sunshine, which should also be good news to anybody who broke a mirror that day.

3D Mario has delighted fans since 1996, maintaining an astonishing level of quality and bringing innovations not just to the 3D platformer genre, but gaming as a whole. Needless to say, it’s a hard task to rank a series where every entry is beloved, but I shall nevertheless undertake this risky venture with my head held high. Wish me luck."

One of the worst marios.. i hated the fact it was only about finding the moons and very repetitive with the same bosses. There is no exploration in this one.
Galaxy 2 is still unmatched

TiredGamer237d ago

I played, completed, and enjoyed Mario Odyssey, but I tend to agree that I don't think it's the best 3D Mario. There was sense of sameness that prevailed after the first couple of worlds... not in the levels, environments, or aesthetics, but in the routine of each world. It just felt like each new environment was just the beginning of another checklist of moons to acquire, and the sheer number of them took away the sense of accomplishment I got from the stars in Mario 64 and the like. I can't exactly put my finger on why that is. Galaxy gets my nod as the best one.

Cacabunga237d ago

I enjoyed it too but i won’t even place it in my top10 mario games.. as you said you are just looking for stars and that irritating music everytime you find one.
Also the bosses are pretty much the same from begging to end. I would have have like some koopalings instead of these dumb useless rabbits

Chocoburger238d ago

I played a little of this game and freakin' LOVED it! But I forced myself to stop because I hadn't played Galaxy 2, which I've been playing every day for the past week. Cripes, Galaxy 2 is way better than I expected it to be! Even though I dislike the Wiimote and nunchuck controls, and it annoyed me a lot with Galaxy 1, part 2 just feels better and slightly less gimmicky when it comes to the controls.

Profchaos238d ago

Sunshine at number 7 no way. I get it's not perfect but it deserves better to date there has not been another 3d Mario that's managed to capture that same movement it's the most acrobatic feeling Mario to date.

It's by and large better than 3d land/world and I'd argue that galaxy 2 didn't offer any trie innovation it was essentially a DLC pack to 1

Personally it's
1) Mario 64
2) Mario Sunshine
3) Mario galaxy
4) Mario Odyssey
5) galaxy 2
6) Bowser fury
7) 3d land/ world.

Looking Ahead: The Lingering Questions About the Next Mario Kart

VGChartz's Mark Nielsen: "10 years. It’s been almost 10 years since the last mainline release in the Mario Kart series. Mario Kart 8 came out for the Wii U in 2014 and became the best-selling game for the system by a sizeable margin, and later pulled the same magic trick on the Nintendo Switch under the stage name Deluxe. All in all, it's sold nearly 70 million copies over the last decade and is still selling like hot cakes to this day, so it’s no wonder Nintendo has been in no rush to replace it. However, with rumors of a new system being just around the corner, and reports a few years back that a new Mario Kart is indeed under way, it seems the era of 8 might very well be drawing to a close. It’s an exciting prospect to be sure, but after two Nintendo systems with Mario Kart 8 at their heart, a lot of questions remain about how Nintendo will choose to follow it up."

I hope they just keep building on Mario Kart 8; Add a track-creation tool, and probably open it up to more Nintendo IPs with new tracks and characters, so Metroid, Punch Out, Starfox, Animal Crossing, etc etc.

there wont be a new one until the switch 2 comes out.

nintendo needs their bangers early on

My top 3 are Mario 3, Mario World and Mario 64. Mario Odyssey is also excellent, and I enjoyed Sunshine but didn't care for the Galaxy series.
