After a pretty lackluster first 17 months for the PS Vita in America and Europe, Joe Thomas takes a look at whether the future of the console looks any brighter.
Yeah we have three really nice pieces of software coming to the Vita. However, look beyond October, what is there after that? Practically nothing. Sony said at E3 they would have 80 something games coming out before the end of the year. WHERE ARE THEY and what are they? Show us something! Show us games that will have us excited about 2014! They better rock it at Gamescom.
I'm not so worried about the PS4. They've effectively already won the console war in Japan with an exclusive FF and KH3 which is only coming out for Xbox 1 and PS4 not the Wii U. Even with hard hitting software in Japan Nintendo still hasn't done well there other than the 3DS. Japan is Sony's.
America will be a struggle. Sony already won a lot of people over at E3. Largely the hardcore who got pissed at MS and decided they wanted a system for gamers and not a media hub. However, I find it hard to believe that Sony will win America because it is MS home turf.
Europe should be interesting. Europe is generally pretty divided but as of late the PS3 has been dominating. I'm also enthusiastic for Sony in Europe because SCEE is by far the best and most competent region with some of Sony's best 1st party developers.
Anyway, I really think they should focus on the Vita. Since the PS4 is so easy to develop for why should they continue to focus company assets on making games for it? Hopefully 3rd party support will be enough to allow them to invest more resources in the Vita.
@flankhim I've never played a first person shooter shooter (or possibly a frames per second shooter), but a good first person shooter would be killzone mercenary.
@bullymangLer - The Vita feels great in the hands. I'm sure some people's hands won't quite mesh with it, but that's true for any handheld... Loved the DS, hated the feeling of the DS Lite for example.
I've been wanting to get a Vita, but the only games that I am really interested in are Uncharted: Golden Abyss and Killzone: Mercenary. They're going to have to show more support for AAA portable games before I take the plunge.
I have been really unimpressed with the psv. I got mine on day one but there has been a reel lack of games I want for the psv and also some of the games I was really interested in were a let down like mnr with no mp.
Due to life changes I've no longer got time to play games like I have done in the past and I've had to pick between the psv and 3ds and decided to keep my 3ds as looking at what a coming out over the next few months the 3ds has a better line up. It is a real shame the psv is not getting the love it should by Sony as the hardware is amazing but at this moment in time it is really lacking in software. I hope Sony can get there act together with the psv as it could go down as one of the classic gaming Systems.
I think the part that was missed in this article was remote play and the functions that Sony is planning to apply such as mandatory that devs develop PS4 and Vita in tandem. What Sony is trying to apply is if you purchase a game on Vita you can play it on both consoles and vice-a-versa. This in my opinion will take vita a little further, because of this I am thinking of purchasing a vita.
Of course it is. VITA is the only companion device for the PS4. They are essentially cramming it down your throat if you want the full experience.
Some people don't like to admit it, but having that companion touch/remote screen is practically an essential feature. Already I use Smartglass about as much as I use my controller.
People give MS crap for a lack of options, but Smartglass has struck the perfect balance. I wonder if Sony will come up with an app for android/iOS devices? I don't see why not (except to spur Vita sales... which is perfectly understandable, considering it has struggled to sell)
In case you haven't noticed, the turnaround for Vita titles from inception to release is about one year max; and that's for the AAA stuff. Middle tier games take about 6-8 months from announcement to localization and release. The smaller stuff gets released at times without warning. I wouldn't be worried about Vita software. I'm a JRPG nut, so the release slate looks excellent as far as I'm concerned.
"Sony said at E3 they would have 80 something games coming out before the end of the year." Well it's 5 months to go so chill the hell down and wait for Gamescom, TGS and daily news man, more will come, it's not like they have to show us immedially after they annouce the games.
your right I just hope 70 of those 80 games arent indies, tgs is for japanese games cause last they announce a bunch of vita games but they were japan only so far so dont get your hopes up
"Current" (These Games I mentioned Were all Decent games, All are pretty much Great games). If You Don't Agree, I Don't Care.

Ultimate Marvel Vs Capcom 3
Street Fighter X Tekken
Little Big Planet

WTF! These People are talking about that Vita Has no games? LOL! No game Your Asses. You just need to Work to earn Money for you to purchase these games.
As What Sony Have said, "We will talk about Vita later these Year"
Persona 4: Golden Mortal Kombat Disgaea 3 Ninja Gaiden Sigma Plus Ultimate Marvel Vs Capcom 3 Street Fighter X Tekken Little Big Planet Dead Or Alive 5 + Oboro Muramasa Need For Speed: MW Metal Gear Solid Hd Collection
Dang look at all dem ports and remakes, too bad the only original games worth playing are Uncharted, Gravity Rush, and Soul Sacrifice.
Talk about needing to reassure yourself of your purchase. That is freaking pathetic. Why don't you go outside and reevalutate your life if you have to defend a *insert expletive here* electronic device like it was your mother?
You can list games and they are good games, but none of these games have mass appeal and the Vita lacks heavy sellers. There is a reason the Vita isn't selling and that is not the consumer's fault.
Alot of those games are great but the problem with your list is that alot of those games, or variations there of, are also available on/has been played to death, on the Vita's big brother PS3.
As a personal example I Do not have an appetite for the following game series right now, on any platform:
Assassins Creed Uncharted Mortal Kombat Ninja Gaiden Ultimate Marvel Vs _____ Street Fighter OR Tekken Dead Or Alive Need For Speed Metal Gear Solid Hd Collection
All those titles by themselves are good games, im just in the mood for something else.
just before I saw the draft which was of $8646, I didnt believe that...my... friends brother woz like they say actually erning money part-time from there pretty old laptop.. there moms best frend started doing this 4 only 8 months and recently took care of the loans on there appartment and bourt a top of the range Maserati. I went here...... http://Pro76.com
I could careless about the Vita. Handhelds for a much maturer audience have proven to be a failure time and time again. And it's not only that, the cost of Vita and memory cards are ridiculous, and little to no support for games. Sony should devote their focus on the PS4, and slowly end this Vita stuff. The more they focus on the Vita-failure, the less focus the PS4 will be getting.
Vita owner here. I'm going to be playing mine all day today over my ps3 games.
i had your opinion until I started playing the games.
soul sacrifice, wipeout 2048, uncharted, lumines, escape plan, hotline miami, and ps1/ps2/psp classics on a hanheld. its a fantastic device that complements the ps4 since you have crossplay for a ton of games.
i highly highly recommend picking up the hori screen protector and then the 5$ grip off new egg. Pretty key accessories. Also either a 16gb or 32 gb memory card.
'the Killzone and Call of Duty games were a bit rubbish really' CoD I get that, but KZ? Its not even out yet :L
Anyways, I agree, the future for vita is getting brighter. Tons of games i cant wait to get my hands, from indies games like Lone Survivor and Terraria to AAA games like Dragons Crown and Tearaway :D
I believe xxPillsxx is right, though it's not like it makes a difference. Two awful games, from one lackluster developer. Maybe if someone good screwed it up, but that is not the case here.
This article pretty much says Vita is getting ports of well known games. Hopefully gamescom is where Vita gets its time to shine cause Im not impressed with this list.
Well, i gues you're right but most of these ports are really nice, and I don't consider The Walking Dead a port, because it's very recent, its just coming out late for the vita..
It needs games of its own, ports are great when they play well, but Jak Collection is a poor example of a port worth buying. Games designed for the Vita from the ground up is what this system needs.
It's a poor example to you, you see, there will always be people that end up buying this games, like me. Allright, it may not be enough to push the system sales up, but at least it keeps me distracted with my vita. At least that's something.
And of course that I agree with you on the ground up games!! Killzone it's gonna be a hell of a title on the vita!! And I hope more companies can see the good oportunity to create new games, just like taking the momentum of this game to announce new ones.
Who doesn't like good ports like GTA? Even if Vita only gets good or bad exclusives I will still be sad if there's no GTA, GOOD resistance, GOOD COD, GOOD Battlefield, clearly the Vita can take open world as Need for Speed Most Wanted is a good example and Gravity Rush and more so GTA and the rest shouldn't be hard and I'm fine with a bit downgraded graphics too. So in the end we need half exclusives and half GOOD ports, and we're all happy! Gamescom.
God eater 2, freedom wars, killzone, tear away, dragon's crown, that rpg that was in the article ( just heard about it), and phantasy star online 2. Oh....... but vita has no games. My bad.
Then hide with your Mommy Ninty's skirt.Vita Fans ain't benefit from the likes of You.If You live in Ninty's World I Beg You,Don't step into the Holy land of Sony. >_<
Demon gaze, dragons crown, killzone, arkham origins black gate, ff10, rayman legends, tearaway along with games already out like p4g, uncharted, gravity rush, soul sacrifice, and muramasa. People say the vita has no game, yeah right!
exactly. i loved the vita so much that I got the soul sacrifice edition from japan and I gave my day 1 vita to a friend and he and I have been owning the tag team section in PSAS. He has already bought 20 games for the device and uses it wayy more than his 360 now. i also have tons of games on my 32 gig memory stick.
I just absolutely love rpgs on handhelds. There are a lot being localized now, hopefully more to come! All i know is owning a 3ds and vita is awesome! Im gonna have a steady stream of games for years to come :D
Bright? LMAO WOW Still cant believe ppl are are really making these type of articles for PS Vita? and NOT ONE doom article!? PS vita has NOTHING, ZERO, NO GMAES for almost two years now...MF WOW
Calm down, jeez. It's not like this is affecting you in any way personally. I love my Vita, and have quite a few games on it. It's a matter of personal tastes. There are quite a few games for the system, just because you don't like many of them doesn't mean others don't.
Yeah we have three really nice pieces of software coming to the Vita. However, look beyond October, what is there after that? Practically nothing. P.S. Really fucking excited for Tearaway
