Gran Turismo 6 - Is It Just GT 5.5?

A few weeks ago, Polyphony Digital celebrated the 15th anniversary of Gran Turismo with the announcement of the next game in the series - Gran Turismo 6. My initial reaction was one of confusion - "why so soon?". When I realised that it was being made for the PS3 and not the PS4, I was even more baffled. After going hands-on with the demo that hit the PSN Store in the EU a couple of days ago under the flashy title of "GT Academy 2013", I proved myself right. This is no next-gen racing game or advancement for the series; it might as well be an expansion pack to GT5.

if you think this is a small improvement then you don't know anything.

mattritchiegspresso3942d ago

Let me know why you think it's a huge improvement!

IRetrouk3941d ago

Well we could start with the physics and go from there, the new tyre and suspention system really does show in the shift of the cars, body roll and weight transfer are improved too. Then we could go on and talk about how the tracks look great as do the cars and other effects like dirt clouds and tyre smoke, also how the shadows are now a lot more defined and smooth.

nix3941d ago (Edited 3941d ago )

@steve: well... you clearly don't know anything.

"why so soon?"

Forza came out with so many editions within one generation... meanwhile GT is only coming out with two.

abzdine3941d ago

with the DS3 it could feel like a GT5.5 cause the gameplay with a controller doesn't add much immersion to the game, but with a GT wheel it's definitely GT6.
Aerodynamics improved and car behaviour is different from before. Also, the graphics are better and the cockpit view is much more detailed.

LaChance3941d ago (Edited 3941d ago )

FORZA 5 here I come.

PD have dropped the ball this gen. First a very dissapointing GT5 after waiting 6 years now GT 5.5.

What happened after the PS2 era ?

BTW lucky theres almost no Xbox fanboys on this site, I mean just imagine this was Forza 5 we were talking about, it would have been so overcrowded with Sony fantrolls coming in from absoluteley everywhere.

jimbobwahey3941d ago

Oh dear Steve, your article reads like one very bitter Forza fanboy. Maybe you should try dropping the "My toy is better than your toy!" childish insecurities, and perhaps people would take your no-name website a little more seriously.

I mean really, aren't you embarrassed of yourself?

Gamingcapacity3941d ago

I would say lets wait till we get our hands on the game. ATM with what we know it deserves to be a sequel. Hundreds of news cars, new track, updated and better UI, better physics, all the standard cars have been improved.
This is before we know the changes to tuning your cars and the improved weather system.

To me it's GT6 but let's get our hands on the game before we can even quaetions it.

yami9303941d ago

It has been tradition to release 2 GT games every generation and GT 6 is following that. All the changes are not apparent as of now seeing how the game is not complete yet (graphics especially) but GT6 is no GT5.5 and that will be obvious when the game is released (not obvious when you're ready to review a game by its demo). As with every 2nd GT game on the same generation (GT 2, GT 4) the game gets bigger, more tracks, more cars, more features, better graphics and a lot of little details which add up to a pretty hefty change. For GT6, there are brand new cars being added, more cars going premium, whatever standard cars are left are getting upgrades graphically as well as customizable options, there are brand new tracks, better graphics (new rendering engine, shadows, effects, new lighting system, new blur etc.), new UI, more rock less jazz, new physics (new suspension model and aerodynamics model), new tire model, better engine sounds, better AI, improved online multiplayer options and functionality, shorter load times all around and more, and those are only the things we know about being that Kazunori Yamauchi is saving some news and announcments for Gamescom and TGS. The graphics and other aspects will be even more impressive and stand out when the game is completed and released. Also, something the GT series always has is fan feedback being heard and massive support, such as how GT 5 was shaped by what fans wanted, what they asked for (the inital release of GT 5 was nothing on what it has become, a good game turned great).

Like many others have said, to really feel the difference and get the full experience you need a racing wheel. We all have to wait and see, if you dont like the game after it releases than your completely entitled to your opinion, but I do feel regardless it will be an improvement over GT 5 and should be given a try when done.

I hated everything about GT5, but GT6 demo is absolutely a different experience.

slivery3941d ago

Someone already did and you didn't have anything to say back. They elaborated pretty well on many aspects of the games changes.

So as they say if you don't have anything important to say then don't say anything at all. Cause you sure as hell aren't elaborating on anything yourself.

Android3941d ago

Thats why I didn't download it. Grand Turismo 5 is so damn perfect I absolutely can not imagine a major improvement this gen. Still, its to early for me to judge as I haven't tried it yet. Looks like I have to draw for the ol logitech wheel again.

MajorLazer3941d ago

GT6 is, IMHO, a more complete GT5. GT5 felt very incomplete, with features being half hearted and the whole game just being lacking as they went with Quantity > Quality. GT6 however rectifies those issues, though not completely because 700 cars are still standard, with 500 being premium

look at time comments were posted. SteveDW in fact didn't receive an answer yet...just sayin

On the subject of menus, why do the guys at PD insist on that mouse clicker looking pointer to navigate the menu?
Is this 1998? As technologically advanced as Japan is, it seems they're stuck in the past when it comes to their UI in most cases.

mattritchiegspresso3941d ago

Couldn't agree more. I appreciate that the developers may not understand the western kind of UI as much, but for a pad with analogue sticks, it just seems so wrong.

SoapShoes3941d ago

What the heck.... Really? The other type of UI used in western AND eastern games have been used since forever. I guess if they did away with the pointer they'd be just as stuck in the 90's but no try to find something to complain about....

HarryMasonHerpderp3941d ago

Wow complaining about a pointer in a menu?

You serious?

WitWolfy3941d ago

I'll wait for GT 7 on PS4.. Wake me up when it releases...

Hellsvacancy3941d ago

Im kinda the same, I wasnt all that impressed with the demo, I mean it was alright

The thing is though with the PS4 on the horizon bundled with DriveClub I think its a little late in the year to release GT6, personally, I dont intend on buying it

ethomaz3941d ago

DriveClub will be a couplet different experience... instead a simulatior racing it is a more arcade style.

And I think GT6 is the best choice for driving maniacs.

WitWolfy3938d ago

@ethomaz

We didnt say GT 6 isnt worth our time, we're saying that we'd rather wait and see what new features a NEXT gen console brings to the franchise instead of a version that should've been everything 5 is as it stands at the moment.

ethomaz3941d ago

I loved GT5 but GT6 is in another league... all the improvements makes the driving fantastic... no other sim can give you that feeling over the wheel.

I can't stop to try to beat my own times in the Demo... vicious.

Between Sophy and PSVR 2, Polyphony is REALLY pushing videogames forward into a whole new era.

crazyCoconuts168d ago

"Gran Turismo has to run on the PlayStation 5, and that means Sophy cannot consume all the computing resources of the machine."
Interesting - I thought at first Sophy was controlled from their server farms. Seems like they've got it running locally.

Yamauchi on Why Gran Turismo Works in VR Without Making You Sick

Remon: "I didn't expect Gran Turismo 7 to be the most relaxing and soothing game on Playstation VR2 . Yes, it's a high speed racing game with extremely realistic physics. But for me, next to Tetris Effect Connected, it's become the most meditative PSVR 2 experience. What's even more surprising is that Gran Turismo 7 in PSVR 2 doesn't make me sick despite its high speeds.

Gran Turismo series producer Kazunori Yamauchi spoke to me via video chat to discuss why the GT7 feels so enjoyable to drive and what inspired his design choices."

I was very careful not to push myself when i first popped GT7 in VR, by limiting myself to 30 min sessions. I got sick from Drive Club VR. Surprisingly, even after hours of playing on a Gr 3 race, I don’t get sick now.

SullysCigar361d ago

Yamauchi has suggested in the past that choosing a slower car that's a convertible is a good choice for your first drive, because it makes you feel less enclosed, but you still have the frame of reference of the car itself.

When I put friends or family into GT7 on PSVR2, I sit them in front of my wheel, put them in a Mazda MX-5 / Miata, roof off and tuned to remove body roll, improved brakes, slick soft racing tyres and a turbo. This seems perfect, as they spin out less and can get started again more easily if they do. It's not too fast, but fast enough for a first timer. Set up a fan facing them too - that certainly helps.

But people quickly adjust and you just want more variation, speed and handling as you get better at the game. It's the most hooked I've been for years.

XiNatsuDragnel361d ago (Edited 361d ago )

Congratulations Yamauchi

Viljong361d ago

Is vr sickness even a thing. 30 fps games are worse

mandf361d ago

Nothing to do with frames although that has a part. Walking and then saddening stopping messes with your brain for some people. Me included

Viljong361d ago

Switchback is the only game which give me slight nausea same as irl rollercoaster. When it go highspeed and steep downhill comes it feel like my stomach is moving up and im falling off my stool. Interesting that i get the same effect than irl coaster without movement. But i dont call it vr sickness its just very immersive. Other games i play with freemovement and all vignette effects off.

Have GT7 too and playing it without nausea. Its superb in vr mode. Wish i could get the logitech g923 for it. But dualsense is very good aswell and feel right at home after playing forza on series x. Ofc with better haptics that dual sense offer. Only bad thing about gt7 is the unskipable movie when you play it first time. I was getting frustrated after all the motor history it start showing ingame racing i think the whole thingh lasted like 20-30min. Then you get the coffeeshop things and tutorials going on and finally when you get to race you have 120hp hybrid family car.

lucian229361d ago

Any artificial movement can cause motion sickness. Certain games I can't play in vr be cause of it. That's why I prefer games like superhot thst move only when your body moves

kneon361d ago

It's the discrepancy between what you are seeing and feeling and what your brain expects to be seeing and feeling that causes issues in VR. That's why latency is a killer. if you turn your head and the image lags behind it messes you up.

mandf361d ago

Kneon
You're right about that. Gt7 gave me motion sickness in the beginning but went away. I play for 12 hours a day on the weekend with no problems now. Pavlov still gets me. Resident evil is awesome but when I walk it gets me. It gets less over time.

RPGer361d ago

Because the nature of GT games. The game and the camera is static as ever, and it very usable and a prefect way to play racing game with long sessions in VR.

Einhander1971361d ago

I must say I'm still feeling sick when playing Turismo.

Babadook7361d ago (Edited 361d ago )

That’s too bad. Take it slow. Don’t push through uncomfortable feelings. Just play within your limit and build your VR legs over the course of a month or two. Eventually you’ll be able to play much more and with faster cars. It’s worth it, trust me.

Wow, crazy isn't it? The draw distance is vastly improved, the background textures too and there's ZERO shimmer now. And the replays are night and day!

EIDT: @below, Haha I didn't notice that!

IRetrouk423d ago

Yeah, theres a massive improvment all round, Looks amazing with the time of day transitions too, me and a couple online buddies jumped on earlier to try it out lol, did you notice the beach full of seals?

closed_account423d ago

That coastline looks amazing and I can only imagine it in VR! Looks like an entirely new course as far as scenery goes.

IRetrouk423d ago

Yeah, those views are going to be crazy when we are "there" can't wait!

PureBlood423d ago

Just got confirmation my PSVR2 is shipping by 24 hour courier, so I should have it tomorrow! I know nobody else cares, but I had to tell someone lol

GT7 will be my first game, as I want to test out my wheel - so excited - it's going to be awesome!

Deathdeliverer423d ago

I got my confirmation and date (22nd) showing for the charging station. The headset itself has been in “shipped-processing” status since last Friday. I’m like dang can I see the date? I was in the first round of preorders. Whenever it does get here, I’m ready. Going to go update everything and try to get over this cold.

PureBlood423d ago

Wish you better, bud, fingers crossed for your order too.

@S2Killinit - Thank you!

IRetrouk423d ago

I care👊🏻, mine is still saying prep for shipping😔

PureBlood423d ago

Thanks man 👊

Word of advice: be ready for the impromptu jig that happens when that email drops, it can be embarrassing..

DaReapa423d ago

Just got my second shipping confirmation email as well.

Man i caant wait. One day left!

Flawlessmic422d ago

I know you and a lot of people are excited for VR but dont sleep on sophy, sophy is the real game changer here!

After giving sophy a run last night, i can safely say the actual racing in future GT's is going to be Fu***** amazing!!!

even on intermediate on some tracks the AI was coming back at me on my waiting for me to slip, attacking the space if i left the door open for them, honestly felt like i was racing against people and not some very limited AI that once i passed them they may as well have been eliminated from the race like GT ai normally is.

pump it up to expert and its a real challenge to stay ahead, the next level up from expert man the AI kicked my ass, like badly.

i remember when sophy was first annouced all the nay sayers said its a pipe dream and we will never see it implemented and here we are a yr later and sophy is being tested in game for us to try out and is every good as whats been promised.

VR plus racing against sophy and wowww your not gonna feal like your actually racing for real anywhere else outside of gt.

sophy will change the game in gt8

S2Killinit422d ago

Hm I didnt realize it was like that. I didnt even know why there was so much hype about it. But thanknyou for explaining that. I mean I get it now.

But I’ll be seeing it in action tomorrow! Woot woot.

Flawlessmic422d ago

It's only for a limited time and only has 4 races but I encourage you and everyone else try it and see the difference compared to the normal Ai.

Sophy has slipped completely under the radar in this latest uodate
