Microsoft says Xbox SmartGlass app downloaded over 17 million times – we’re not so sure
No it's just smoke and mirror.
So as stated in the article they are the only site that is uncovering this plot by MSFT LMAO It is downloaded a lot based app store tracking.
It was likely deleted just as many times.
No it's actually a very popular and useful app/tech and highly rated. It's on almost all mobile device marketplaces most likely on every device a person owns. The tech is actually blowing up and developers and partners in other industries are rushing in to take advantage of a very useful addition to gaming and other content from other industries merging them together. Trolls will be trolls. It's MED time EDIT @Godmars290 Smartglass is free... I use it most to gather info about artist on XBOX MUSIC service and to remotely control my Xbox 360 and type. This list is not updated with all the compatible devices and companies/services http://www.xbox.com/en-US/s... It's now on Amazon/Kindle
its shit. i downloaded it because i thought hey what a great feature, but after signing into my email account every time i want to use it and then realising that its easier and quicker to just use the controller, it soon got disregarded. i only use it (with frustration) when my batteries in my 360 pad dies. no other use for it.
If its a free app, its likely. Still, what company doesn't fudge the numbers of their products? Especially when to sell them. More so when its MS...
"More so when its MS..." I dont know about that. I agree with you, every company does it. I just dont see any evidence that they do it more than any other company. That just sounds like a small jab at Microsoft just because.
Smartglass is used for more then just games too. So I wouldn't put to much stake is this article.
Microsoft can say they're giving out 1 milion xbox one's for free and the majority will not believe it. They've lost their credibility with the DRM issue so bad that people finds it hard to invest their trust in them.
It wouldn't surprise me if 17 millions people downloaded the app, it is free right? If I still had my Xbox 360 I'd download it to try it out. I'm not going to make fun of Microsoft for this. It seems like SmartGlass hasn't caught on, and the idea that I'm going to be watching a movie and want an app that tells me about it at the same time sounds kind of, useless. However, for all I know there is potential I haven't thought about. That being said, it also wouldn't surprise me if these numbers were - fudged.
I have the app on my Android phone, ipad. I use it to browse Netflix and type in codes. It is not of great use ATM but will be an essential part of MS implementation with Xbox1. Dead Rising 3 and Project Spark will take great advantage of it. Can't wait for project spark.
Sure since it's free, but how many people deleted it after using it on never touched it again?
Unfortunately that cant truthfully be answered. Same can be said for basically every app on a phone, tablet, PC or otherwise. Since it cant be measured, the only statistics a company or individual can go on is number of downloads and just hope that reasonably measures up to the number of users. The one thing that can be measured and is probably used to pad statistics like this from all companies and developers is the number of secondhand downloads. I admit, I myself am part of the problem. I install ROMs on my phone all the time and Im always re-downloading a lot of the same apps. Although I dont use smartglass.
i know with windows 8 it automatically downloaded it on my pc with a windows update
Google uses it with google fiber tv Microsoft is using it for the 360 & XB1 Sony has plans to use it with the Vita, PS4 & Gaikai. When did we first see the concept take form?!?
I don't see why they have to lie about it: 1. I don't see why there wouldn't be 17 millions smart glass user out there considering there are 30-40 million xlive members. 2. Smart Glass can be on any mobile devices, not tied to MS mobile devices. There are practically billions of people with all sort of mobile devices out there. 17 million 3. It sure doesn't work as smoothly when it is used as an alternate controller, but other than that, it works pretty well (forza horizon come to mind). The tech is still improving (hopefully this will be the portal to all digital distribution from MS where you can access your contents anywhere at any time).
I say 4,250,000 people have downloaded it from that 17 million downloads number. Take into account people have more than one device. That cuts the number by half. Then take into account people that delete the app and redownload it again. I have done this when i first downloaded it. I didnt see the point in it all at first but then being able to control my xbox with my phone was cool so i downloaded it again.
I downloaded it, used it once as a remote control, though Meh!
right? what the hell is it even used for.. at least with ps4/wiiu, the second screen can be used for 1) actually streaming the game to the screen 2) display separate game screen (inventory/map )the 2nd screen 3)playing the game independently [( not needing a main viewing source (your tv.. for the less trained minds)] I used it twice, well tried to use it.. why the hell would I want to look on one side of the room, read some shit about the game im playing for about 2 minutes, then resume my game play on the other side of the room?
It's free, it makes sense to at least download it to try it out. Now how many people actually care to use it, especially for their gaming, is the question...
Why have an article to try and attempt to refute how many times a FREE APP is downloaded... Talk about pointless... Lots of people use it...Lots of people don't lets move on and write an article people can actually take something from. And MS has access to all the numbers you don't...and it's a free APP so who really cares how many times it's actually downloaded. Also...The writer doesn't take into account it's more then just for games. So maybe the writer should do a little more research before writing an article.
I have it on 2 devices, my fiancé on 2 and our son on 1. So I can see it being downloaded a hell of a lot considering its also free
I have downloaded it 3 times in recent months, It is free on stores too so this is hardly that unbelievable but also not all that impressive a feat.
Checked google play store, says its been installed between 1-5 million times in the last 30 days. That's just on android. So yeah that sounds very believable. Sounds like a decent app. I assume you can use it to purchase content when away from your console like the web store? And then the xbox downloads it ready for you to play if I remember correctly. Great feature. If I used my xbox more I would definitely use it.
Just by browsing here I see a bunch of individuals that download it on multiple devices. I have it on my tablet and phone so 17 mil is true.
I don't understand why we have to nit-pick apart everything microsoft claims and it isn't even something worth getting a fit over. SmartGlass was launched quite a while ago for all mobile platforms and windows. So, that's a total of 4 platforms, right? As SpecialK mentioned, it's been downloaded on the android platform ~1-5 million times on android devices in the past month. Then you still have windows phone devices, ios devices, and windows devices to take into account for. Considering that there are ~77-80 million xbox users, 17 million downloads doesn't seem like a stretch, imo.
I've downloaded it 3 times, don't own an Xbox any more and never will again.
I have it on my MSI Windpad 110us Windows 8 Pro Tablet with 8 GB DDR3-1333 Dual Core and Radeon Graphics. I have it on my Nokia Lumia 822 Phone and I have it on my Windows 8 Pro Desktop Hexacore Unlocked 3.33 16 GB superclocked gtx570 240 gb SATA3 SSD 640 GB SATA3 Caviar Black 2 TB Green 1.5 TB Green Touch controls. My gf will have it on her HTC Sprint Phone and Windows 8 Desktop. That doesn't include the dozen tablets and smartphones that I have just lying around. 17 mil is really low imo.
@Sky i said that also. But someone is deleting all the good stuff I say about M$. I have a iPad 3 Asus Transformer Prime Galaxy Note 2 , My girl has a iPad 2 and a Note. . And before the note I had a HTC 4GLTE and a Galaxy S3. All had smartglass
Microsoft releases official numbers. Blogger claims they are wrong. The internet believes the blog post. I downloaded it twice btw.
Just curious though, why all the hate? I know this is n4g but really after all this time and still all this hate? I guess it is easy to hate on the big dog, talking company wise with billions in cash reserve and triple a credit rating. I thought that would be a good thing as a company is less likely to axe features and will support their products better and longer. We all know why the original Xbox was dropped as it was too costly to make the NVidia graphics and the Xbox 360 is being supported for a long time as they own all the internals. I for one liked the idea of having my catalog of games always with me as I never sell my games. I also like the fact that Microsoft was trying to make a step in and save the developers. What's going to eventually happen is that all that is left are the big triple a devs. We will not see a diversity in games and then the console days will really be over as tablets and smartphones will have no competition. Is it that hard to take one for the team and save the smaller devs? Goes for all console companies. I would much rather have drm and have a diverse library like the ps2 had than none at all. Just sayin... All companies lie or their vision is not met...take a look at the original ps3 with dual hdmi, gigabit router capabilities, etc.
Wow I was saying then same thing before some Douche deleted it
Microsoft says something, they are full of crap, nothing but PR spin. Sony says something, you can bank on it. it is the absolute truth, they never spin anything.....ever. Sigh......
After the XBox One reveal fiasco, E3 trainwreck, bad PR, backtracking, lies, lies and more lies... I dont believe a damn thing Microsoft says, anymore. Theyre gonna spin hype as much as they can and over embelish the facts for as long as they can. OVER 17 Million?! ...Not likely.
I've only maybe used it a handful of times, usually to type out a message while I'm playing or something. I've used the controller portion on the phone maybe once or twice though, prefer an actual controller to navigate through the menus.
When did they lie? E3 trainwreck? M$ won E3 hands down when it come to games. And Sony has been lying to us for years with that Killzone footage they showed some yaers back talking about it was gameplay lol
How is it hard 2 believe the got 17 million dl. I actually thought it would have been more. Most gamers have iphone or android phone.
And actually used how many times?
