Did The PS3 2.2 Firmware Update Break MP4 Streaming?

Gizmodo writes: "Just days after Sony released its new PlayStation 3 firmware update, people are already pointing out new problems it's caused rather than fixed. Users on the U.S. PlayStation board are reporting that 2.2 is making all of their streaming MP4s st-st-stutter, rendering them almost completely unplayable.

Forum members have already ruled out the possibility of it being a connection issue (higher bitrate DivX/XviDs stream just fine), and folks over at Tversity are saying it isn't a media server issue either - one guy apparently tested Tversity, Twonky Media and Nero Home Media. All are stuttering like crazy after the firmware update.

Other problems forum members have come across:
•10x, 30x and 120x speeds for MPEG2s stream at only 1/10 or so the usual frame rate (regular MPEG2 streaming works fine though)
•Skipping over unwanted content "became very hard to do"

What gives Sony? Don't you test this stuff out before releasing it to the public?"

I just noticed that yesterday, surprised there hasnt been a mention of it. But yeah, mine does seem a touch slower when skipping through videos than before the update.

is fine on mine nothing is skipping maybe it's just there ps3 like they are messing with it i doubt its hack like the picture saids but idk anything all i know is that mine is working perfectly fine it works way better than before

Hah Giz still has lost credibility with me from the last time they put a news story on a PS3 firmware update and started lying without fully testing anything. However since this has been reported on the official forums, I'm sure a fix is in order. Like always "my sh*t works".

Sheesh guy, you're always one of the first people to jump in and start crap on things you know nothing about, have fun with that. I don't know, maybe a PS3 killed your family or something, if so I'm sorry, if not then stop being creepy.

If you used more of your brain instead of going into instant flame mode (like you ALWAYS do), you'd realize what I said had merit. Sony screws up I know this and I've never once said that they didn't, but Gizmodo posted an article after 2.10 went live with their fake ass comparison that they didn't really do.

They were shot down by everyone in their comments section for spreading false info and half baked testing. They then had to go actually TEST what they said then the results came back differently and they had to retract their previous statements.

So yes, when it comes to this I don't trust Gizmodo, from past experiences alone.

I'm still playing mp4's without a stuttering or skipping problem.

I use Tversity and I'm NOT having a problem.
I wonder if the users having problems just have crappy computers, not capable of streaming content to the PS3...

used happen to me before the 2.17 and after updating to the 2.20 it stopped. well it stopped but now some of my mp4 files dont play it says unsupported.now i use something else to do my streaming

my pc is an intel core 2 duo processor with 4 gb memory and a whopping 750gb hard drive im sure my pc aint crap. but nah i dont use tversity i use the normal wm11 to do my streaming. i might try tversity tonight

Unfortunately im not as fortunate as most of you, mine has been stuttering badly. I stream all my movies and i have never had a problem with it stuttering before the update. i thought i needed a new router or something, i even installed and un-installed tversity several times. this clears up what the prob is nicely. I convert all my movies to HD-AVC btw, most come out better than the dvd source

Not only do my MP4's play just swell, but ALL of my Divx & Xvid files finally play flawlessly, whereas prior to the update, I was required to re-encode several otherwise-fine Divx files, or convert them to AVC.

Thank you Sony, and keep it coming.

When I view folders in my music the list are empty now. unless I select view all. The music being sorted by author has nothing in the directories yet the folder has the data and MP3s in there if I click view all.

These folders where created by the PS3 yet suddenly only show up if you select special options.

This isn't normal because I can open the folders through PS3 but they're empty until you tell the software "hay that's right mp3s are in there. Before the update it'd display all music in the music folder so something changed in the firmware.

I haven't been able to install a single mod on UT3. I have no idea if it has anything to do with the update, but I can't imagine it being anything else considering I use the same flash drive and same website for mods.

I even tried to install some of the mods I already had and I couldn't even reinstall them. Anyone else having this problem?

And before anyone asks, the file setup on my flash drive is set up perfectly to install mods. I know because it was working until this week.

I think this new update changed to way the PS3 searches for files. Like I said in my last topic suddenly MP3s sorted by authors suddenly require me to tell the PS3 view all. If this is the case with mods it's not properly searching files.

I also head codebreaker PS2 no longer works since 2.17 but I've never run that on a PS3 so I haven't a clue if it's fact or fiction.

Hey EZCheez, As far as unrealtournament 3 goes, your just have to put your mod in the root of your memory device; it doesn't go any folders anymore. This and may other things were fixed in the last update.

Im using Nero 7. Ive tried everything in the book to try and fix it. Have 2 ps3s: one wired and one wireless, and both of them freezes for one or two seconds when streaming movies form my computer. And it is mp4 files. All other files work fine.

I have also noticed your issue QuietStorm. With your router the WRT54g, if you suddenly disconnected from the psn network or are having connection issues you need to get the latest firmware update for the router, I had a friend do that and hasn't had problems since.
Update: Also for anyone that is having issues and are behind a router, try to setup static ip addresses for your ps3, and other devices.
