Preview: Mario Kart 8 will finally make gamers buy a Wii U - Canada

You wouldn’t think 60 frames per second and high-definition graphics would make a big difference in a series like Mario Kart, but it really does.

I'm really looking forward to Mario Kart 8. It looks so fast.

dedicatedtogamers4117d ago (Edited 4117d ago )

Double Dash and Smash Bros Melee didn't make gamers buy a Gamecube...

I don't understand why people think Nintendo's annual releases will suddenly make their console sell like hotcakes. It was new, non-rehashed games like Wii Sports and Wii Fit that caused the Wii sales to skyrocket.

@ below

But am I wrong? I want the Wii-U to succeed, but Nintendo insists on betting the farm on vanity projects (Wind Waker HD, Mario 3D World) and annual releases (Mario Kart, Donkey Kong) instead of going all out and really trying to set the market on fire like they did with the Wii and the DS (two of my favorite systems of all time).

diepdiep4117d ago (Edited 4117d ago )

You're such a buzz kill. This game WILL make the console increase sales (along with other future titles).

Edit: Also, "annual releases"? I doubt you even know what that means.

Theyellowflash304117d ago

Since when was Mario Kart a annual release? More like once per a console or handheld generation. Mario Kart 8, the series stared in 1992.

And Mario Kart Wii sold 32 million units. So yes, Mario Kart 8 will make people buy a Wii U.

Not to mention Mario Kart 7 on the 3DS is topping 8 million units sold. And that made people buy a 3DS.

Oh and one more thing, people didn't buy a GameCube because the PS2 was so dominate with exclusives like DMC, Monster Hunter, Dragon Quest and Final Fantasy

Sony doesn't have those exclusives anymore, and Nintendo has exclusives deals with Monster Hunter and Dragon Quest. Things are different from the PS2 days.

Plus Nintendo has X, Bayonetta 2, Donkey Kong, and Zelda, ect.

The Wii U is going to be just fine this holiday. And it's for sure going to outsell the $499.99 Xbox One.

N4g_null4117d ago (Edited 4117d ago )

Nope those Mario karts sucked. Mariokart sold like crack on the wii. It sold like a cold pile of bullcrap on Ngc. Doubledash sucked so much it was not even funny. It was like Sony made it.

khowat4117d ago (Edited 4117d ago )

IMO this game looks great and though it may be one of nintendo's "annual"(lol, seriously) releases, I think it's still welcomed by consumers

also who kinda wants Game and Wario to become popular, looks like a fun quirky game

jcnba284117d ago

"Annual releases"

8 Mario Kart games in 21 years.

4 Super Smash Bros. games in 14 years.

Yes, annual releases.......

PopRocks3594117d ago

@dedicatedtogamers

"Annual releases?" Er, Mario Kart 7 will have been out for over two years by the time Mario Kart 8 has been released.

Besides, the GCN had very little appeal outside of fans of Nintendo. The Wii was primarily casual and the Wii U seems to be going for a mix of the two (games like Wii Fit U verses Bayonetta 2). Being that Mario Kart Wii did pretty well and Mario Kart 7 is part of the 3DS' comeback, I can see that platform moving units.

Maybe not in the tens of millions, but I can imagine there being a positive push for the console.

Dj7FairyTail4117d ago

Mario Kart and Smash Bros. only comes out oncer per gen per platform.

Stop trolling

Gameplay has always been great with Nintendo titles. This fresh HD paint is looking sweet.

Well, they are right when it comes to me personally, i will indeed buy a WiiU for MK8.
They kind of brought in the gameplay from the Triforce arcade Mario Kart GP series, and nailed it with great polish on the WIIU

MooseWI4117d ago

I played the Wii U at GameStop recently and it was a joy to see Mario and other titles in HD finally, it was nice looking. I will get one when they price drop though, $350 is too much for that in my opinion.

CaptainYesterday4117d ago

I feel the same way I've wanted a Wii U since it came out Nintendo makes really great games. As soon as the price drops I will run out and finally go get a Wii U hopefully it will drop soon.

Dj7FairyTail4117d ago

If 350 is too much for you then 400 for PS4 is too much for u as well.

And don't say it not.

MooseWI4117d ago

For $400 I am getting something different.

Triforce0794117d ago

Get a life MK8 with MarioTV app looks amazing i would pay $500 plus on a console to play MK8.

Looking Ahead: The Lingering Questions About the Next Mario Kart

VGChartz's Mark Nielsen: "10 years. It’s been almost 10 years since the last mainline release in the Mario Kart series. Mario Kart 8 came out for the Wii U in 2014 and became the best-selling game for the system by a sizeable margin, and later pulled the same magic trick on the Nintendo Switch under the stage name Deluxe. All in all, it's sold nearly 70 million copies over the last decade and is still selling like hot cakes to this day, so it’s no wonder Nintendo has been in no rush to replace it. However, with rumors of a new system being just around the corner, and reports a few years back that a new Mario Kart is indeed under way, it seems the era of 8 might very well be drawing to a close. It’s an exciting prospect to be sure, but after two Nintendo systems with Mario Kart 8 at their heart, a lot of questions remain about how Nintendo will choose to follow it up."

I hope they just keep building on Mario Kart 8; Add a track-creation tool, and probably open it up to more Nintendo IPs with new tracks and characters, so Metroid, Punch Out, Starfox, Animal Crossing, etc etc.

there wont be a new one until the switch 2 comes out.

nintendo needs their bangers early on

The Next Mario Kart Desperately Needs A Good Gimmick

Mario Kart 8 has been out for nine years now if you include the Wii U version. Despite the Switch port continuing to sell insane numbers since it came out in 2017, many people believed that a new installment was way past due. When the Booster Course Pass was announced instead, it was a bit controversial, with one side of people stating that it was time for a new game, and the other side believing that this was the best course of action and that there's nothing else Nintendo can do to innovate the franchise.

There's nothing wrong with the games, but after most of them being very samey, I got a bit bored. I liked MKDS because it added a mission mode, yeah it didn't have maybe as many as I'd like but it was decent for variety.

I really prefer the new Mario Party for the different types of games in it.

Mario Kart doesn't really feel fresh because you know what to expect for every new game pretty much. The single player mode of DKR was far more in depth a game vs Mario Kart IMO, MK is probably better for multiplayer though.

-Foxtrot464d ago

It needs a campaign mode like Crash Team Racing with open hubs, driving around the Mushroom Kingdom, selecting your races and the like. Have a system like the CTR tokens within the races that then unlock secret racing cups later on or the time relics to unlock other things.

There's nothing wrong with the games but when you've had the same set up for so many games it just gets a bit samey after a while.

They could even have something like a track creator like Modnation Racers or something.

Neonridr464d ago

I always enjoyed the single player aspect of Diddy Kong Racing myself.

Knushwood Butt464d ago

After starting with the first game on SNES, I think the last one I bought was on the DS.

Phlacky463d ago (Edited 463d ago )

I think the next gimmick should be interactive tracks with obstacles and traps such as maybe throwing a shell ahead to make something fall on another player Also have water and mud parts that effect handling more also fire parts that can cause you to over heat if you stay in it to long etc...

Yi-Long463d ago (Edited 463d ago )

I don’t think it needs ‘a gimmick’ so much, because gameplay is pretty much perfect right now, but I would like the next Mario Kart to do either a ‘track-builder’ thing, so you just get access to the tools and make your own tracks (think Modnation Racers or LBP Karting), and/or expand upon ‘Mario’ Kart and open it up to the rest of Nintendo IPs, and just do a ‘Nintendo Kart’, so we’d see more of Zelda, but also Starfox, Kirby, Metroid, Valkyria Chronicles*, etc.

* I know, technically not ‘Nintendo’.
