Super Mario 3D World won't have online multiplayer

Super Mario 3D World is the first 3D Mario game to offer four-player multiplayer. Gamers will be able to play as one of four characters, each with their own unique traits: Mario, Luigi, Peach, and Toad.

Unfortunately, Super Mario 3D World’s multiplayer will be limited to local play only. Nintendo has confirmed that you won’t be able to go online and continue the experience with others.

LOL...isn't that the whole point of adding co-op like this, to play with your friends online.

If thats the bloody case I would of rather had a solo adventure like 64, Sunshine and Galaxy. I still can't believe this is the 3D Mario game we are getting, basically Super Mario 3D Land Wii U

Point made well. Sunshine 2 with couch co-op would have made sense. I'm not understanding this decision. It is the biggest name for N and no online?

Most likely, Nintendo has to make up for the lack of 3rd party support all because the system isn't selling well something could be fixed with a price cut. ;)

it's like they are not even trying! I can understand if this is the Wii but this is Wii U that is supposed to be more powerful than the PS3 and 360...yet no online? this is just sad!

Nintendo is designing these game purposely to play with friends and family together just like the old days! It's a decision I'm actually against.To me games like this would be perfect for online. Four people chatting away online a world away is just what a game like Super Mario 3d World needs to make it go from a great game to a magical one.

Why are people disagreeing with you? This is 2013, we've had online multiplayer for almost a decade now and Nintendo still can't get their act together? I realize Mario games are usually great games but come on, let's at least let people play online if you add coop. I can count on one hand the number of times I've played actual couch coop in the past few months, schedule conflicts happen, I live far from most of my friends, and it just is easier to play online. If I want to coop a game, I guarantee that 90% of my time doing so will be online.

I can kind of understand Random Co-Op (people would just be dicks), But this could have used a Friend List Co-op or whatever.

Nintendo needs to STOP being behind the times. Hell, they don't even have an account system yet. All of your games are tied to said console. Maybe next Gen Nintendo will catch up with the year 2005.

In all honesty...this game was probably originally meant as a sequel to the 3DS game..for the 3DS.

They needed more games on the Wii U so they switched it over and are trying to slightly rush it out for the holidays.

It most likely would have been added had they had more time and released it maybe in may 2014.

And the actual game goes in no direction. It's the most stale iteration of a home-console mario game i have ever seen. It's basically a 3DS game upscaled and with 4 players. So dissapointing, and i'm not touching it.

not sure if you own a Wii U, but their online is way better than the wii's and innovates in a lot of ways beyond the other consoles. Now they're gonna get attacked for not attaching multiplayer to every game?

Not to mention its free, something neither of the other consoles can say anymore.

I have one, it may be free but it's very limited. In Black Ops 2 on WiiU, I have trouble finding a single game of Zombies or Multiplayer because there's nobody playing it.

Same story with Madden, same with Assassin's Creed 3, same with Sonic Racing Transformed.

I remember years ago, there was a ton of people playing online on the Wii. Like 40 000 people online at the same time. The community was active, but Nintendo said no to DLC. Because of that, people began to leave to get their games on other consoles. The number of players dropped from 40000 to 8000 and finally to 2500 today.

yeah i have some trouble filling a game on sonic racing transformed, but thats not due to the wii u online services, its to do with the low sales that the console has so far.

I bought my 3Ds thinking, hey it's next gen ready with all the online features they were boasting...it's online isn't a massive leap over the regular Ds...

Well, for me multiplayer is still that group of kids in a friends house just to play SSB and Mario Kart 64. lol I still do it with Mario Kart Wii and SSBB even with these games having online features.

i really don't like multiplayer with mario. The option would be nice, but this isn't a game breaker by any means. There seems to be a huge contradiction on here about multiplayer. People say don't shove it in and waste resources if its not needed, then they complain when games don't have it.

people were mad when single player oriented games like Dead Space, Resident Evil etc. got shoved with MP component when they are not needed but none complaint when game like Bioshock Infinite doesn't have it, right? it's about the nature of the games which some games need online while some others don't and dumb decisions from the devs are what gamers are mad at!

so, this new Mario game is designed from the ground up to be a MULTIPLAYER game, yet offline only?? that's what this is all about as this is freaking 2013 already and Nintendo still refuses to give their fans an OPTINONAL online multiplayer mode!

Humm I got to experience people play this at best buy yesterday and the local multiplayer looks like a blast still. No online sucks but its not the end of the world. I wish e.a would put local in games like need for speed and battlefield

It's really pissing me off how stubborn Nintendo can be. They always focus on local multiplayer. Which is great, but you know there are moments where I would like to play with others when my friends are too busy with their OWN life.

Though i know this game will be fun to play, im not paying $60 for it.. I dont see myself playing this alone all the way to the end.. If it had online coop i wouldnt mind getting just to get a few good laughs.. I beat mario 3d land on 3DS alone but it was a pick up n play, on the go thing.. This is made for multiplayer yet they omit one of the key factors in multiplayer gaming in 2013.. Damnit Nintendo, GET WITH IT!
