The company revealed that its upcoming Xbox One gaming console will be "always on," a startling feature in the wake of revelations about the National Security Agency's efforts to collect American citizens' phone and e-mail records.
Privacy indeed. A bit like having to allow microsoft.com in the firefox plugin noscript before being able to post comments on n4g Why is that?
BS...scare tactics. "Xbox One Privacy Concerns Debunked" "You can pause Kinect if you don’t want it on while playing games or enjoying entertainment. (Just say “Xbox Off.”) When the Xbox One is off, it’s only listening for the single voice command “Xbox On,” that’s it. And you can even turn that feature off too. Obviously, you’d need to enable Kinect for those apps or games that require Kinect functionality to operate." http://winsupersite.com/xbo... http://kotaku.com/xbox-one-... http://www.eurogamer.net/ar...
And yet while Kinect isn't required it must always be connected. Has to be "looking" at you while you use the console. They've also been talking about using it a marketing tool since they've been talking about it.
Wait, the Xbox One won't work if it isn't connected to the Kinect? If that's the case then I don't know what to say.
so basically even if we take what MS says at face value, then you still have the issue of the kinect collecting data from from while your system is on. If consumers allow this type of infringement into our homes, then there will be a day when all your appliances will collect data from you. Can you imagine? Forget the possibilities here in the US, think about what kind of horror is achievable by unrepresentative governments in population control if this reality comes true.
you did all that work getting links for nothing.. jokes on....YOU. SERVED.
If the Kinect is only used to turn on the console via voice commands why can't they allow you to turn it on with the controller or a physical power button on the device? That way Kinect becomes unnecessary for turning it on allowing you to unplug the device which is a lot more secure than Just turning it off. Motorola RAZR i
Ya know...Before all this stuff got confirmed, I was one of those people who said blocking used games and requiring a internet connection was a terrible idea, and then said I don't believe MS would do it because it would be really stupid of them to try. I defended MS when the rumors were there and said that they are rumors, that we should wait for confirmation, that people were making a big deal out of nothing. Well, lo and behold...They were really that stupid and are not only considering these restrictions, but actually implemented them in their system. Now with this required Kinect thing, I really want to say, "Yeah, I doubt MS will use it for anything nefarious, it probably is exactly what they say", but realistically nothing MS does would surprise me right now. MS could easily come out and say, "Yeah it will listen and document everything you say/do to upload to our servers for 'research' data", all in the guise that it's beneficial to the consumer...like targeted advertising...OH wait, they already said they were going to do that at the freakin reveal. They made a big deal about it even. What more proof do you need? Sure it's not "evil" like spying, but MS obviously has other intentions for this device to be used besides enhancing the user experience. One probably hundreds of times more profitable than the game segment...and that's consumer data collection. The only thing that could truly surprise me right now is if MS came out and said that they designed their console to kill kittens...or came out and say they reversed their current polices. Personally I would bet that their machine would kill kittens before they reverse their policies.

Sponsored by the US government. Perfect inhome surveillance device. It would explain MS 'get-it-in-as-many-homes policy no matter what. Any financial hit to be compensated by the government. Ah, I miss the X files lol
