Is Xbox One the last console you'll ever buy?

OXM - The death of videogame consoles has been predicted multiple times during the past decade, cue scornful hilarity, but it may genuinely come to pass with the next generation of videogame hardware. Xbox One, after all, is a machine that's capable of downloading all of its games from, uploading all player data to and even offloading a portion of its processing power to the cloud. Doesn't that do away with the need for a new console, 10 years from now?

The story is too old to be commented.

At this point, it's the only console I "wont" buy.

This ^

just think about it, if the Xbox One succeeds it's only gonna get worse

we are gonna see MORE and WORSE restrictions than the Xbox One already has.

This is why you cannot support their anti-consumerism. By not supporting Microsoft, you are making the future better for the gamers and consumers.

LMFAOOOOOOOOO

yeh Xbox magazine and the xbone transforms into the new leader of the autobots to protect us from any potential alien threats..

Gaming will be over the day I buy one of those ugly things

What I think is hilarious is that Microsoft are so arrogant in their belief that they are the forerunners of the future for gaming that they'll sit there and say that they're right and people just don't like change. I'm sorry but who can predict the future? No one. If they can say "this is the future of the industry, and we're the first ones to capitalize on it" then I say give me winning lottery numbers.

Something is only the future if it's allowed to be the future. If people vote with their wallets, which history indicates isn't likely, and a great deal of money is lost on this "future" then it won't be the future of anything and will instead be a mistake of the Past.

i have a feeling that MS is going to go with the current xbox one in the state it is and then in 2/3 years time come out with a new one. they're capable of doing that.

These systems will last for years, so of course they need to hedge their bets. When Xbox Live came out in 2002 they bet on broadband speeds while most of the world was on dial-up. Fast forward and online gaming on consoles ballooned and Xbox Live became a huge success and pushed online for consoles to a whole new level. Sony bet on bluray and used the popularity of the Playstation to push the format. Now it's the new standard. Same with HDMI. You need a company like Microsoft to push things like the cloud so that it becomes successful. Who else can afford to have 300,000 servers and take that type of demand? Time after time we saw games on the PS3 have issues at launch. Activision said before that on the PS3 they have to set up their own servers and the demand was higher than expected for Call of Duty on the PS3. So they added servers. This did not happen on Xbox Live, Ever since that holiday season years ago when Live was a mess they made sure that would not happen again.

When Xbox Live started they had 5,000 servers, now they have 15,000 and when the Xbox One launches they will have 300,000. That will make things smoother and faster to access and update content. Who else has put this much commitment?

More fear-mongering. Sony already said they are not forcing people to be online, that DRM will not be applied to discs. So what's the problem?

Garbanjo0011952d ago

@ MikeMyers

Things are changing rapidly. The past week has shown what a large investment has done. I want to see physical proof of these servers, show me a grid where everything is connected, there has to be some form of proof.

On the other hand, this nextgen is just getting started, people will be satisfied with XBox once they get in there, and maybe people will be the same way with PS. Although things change man, a month into buying a console things change drastically.

The point is that we have to make the best informed decisions at this time right now, and my money tells me to sell sell sell, so I can buy a PS4. I disagree with the way XBox is running their company, does that mean that I disagree with my friends when they bring up the hate topics lately? I hope it goes away soon cause I kinda want my friends back. They support MS, I support Sony. Pick whichever one suits your wallet and heart the best man (it sounds corny) but at the end of the day it's our gut that does all the talking. Truth is I don't think that MS is that evil of a company, I am opinionated about the damn XBox, but who isn't? It launches in 21 countries only, under a strict and egotistical guideline of Internet only, and DRM, who wouldn't be pissed? I am and I don't even have a PS3 right now. I'm an Xbox fan that chose not to support MS this go round. It's not the end of MS, it's not the end of gaming. It's the end of freedom in my book, and until MS changes these hopeless rules I won't support them.

So much hate for the xbox one, even on OXM most of the comments are '' I wont be buying one'' Nice to see gamers sticking up for their rights

aaron58291953d ago

Haha... Xbox One will be the console to make history. It's the first console in a long long time to unite gamers from either side !

Garbanjo0011953d ago

My god, what have we done. I feel the apocalypse is upon us. We are a united world. Sweet mother of god, get the god damn guns.

JoGam1953d ago

Who said I was buying the Xbox One?

Mounce1953d ago

Yup.

It's the last console I'd ever consider purchasing. I'd rather buy a 3DO than an Xbox One. I'd rather buy an HD-DVD player than an Xbox One.

Hell, I'd rather buy an Apple Laptop than an Xbox One, and I fucking hate Apple.

This title implies that I'm getting one in the first place.

Chupa-Chupa1954d ago

The Dreamcast was the last console I bought. It's still next-gen quality...and you can play used games on it while having the telephone cord disconnected.

coolmast3r1953d ago (Edited 1953d ago )

I feel really sorry for you, dude. You've missed SO MUCH! (of course if you're telling truth).

savaroth1953d ago

The dreamcast was a great console, as was the saturn. Than again so was the Atari 2600. Time moves on. I enjoyed my PS3, and my family enjoyed my xbox360.
:)

As the dreamcast has no blueray and it graphical output is limited it cannot be considered anywhere near " next gen" as good as its games may be ~~

Pintheshadows1953d ago

Yay for the Saturn. I really liked mine.

DxTrixterz1954d ago (Edited 1954d ago )

Well no, I definately WILL NOT buy X1 and give up on my customer rights but Xbox 360 will not be the last console I'll ever brought. Since I turned 100% Sony fanboy I definately WILL buy PS4 and support them as much as I can. Hell I'm even planning to buy a PS3 and PS Vita to get my hands on all those great exclusives that I missed. Seeing how bright the future will be for Sony and if they don't follow Microsoft draconian DRM policy I'll be more than happy to buy PS5 in 10 years and god I hope X1 will be the last console that Microsoft will ever make.

Eyesoffiction1953d ago

I will not purchase the xbox one, it strips you of all consumer rights.
