What will be the go to console of next generation?

By now everyone has seen the news out of E3 about Sony’s PS4, the price, and their policy on used games. Gamers have also seen what Microsoft has to show. Exclusives were shown, media options were displayed, and prices were flashed. But which system will be gamers go to console for the next generation? Will it be the Xbox One, Wii U, the PC, or PS4? Does price and being DRM free matter for the next generation?

PS4/Wii U. Duh.

I mean I have spoken praise for the Xbox One games that they showed, but I'm not paying $500 for a console with those kinds of restrictions. I'll wait for several price drops and a Microsoft paid hooker first.

2pacalypsenow4388d ago

And who knows if MS will continue focusing on TV and kinect after They release , they just summed up a bunch of games too look like they care about the core gamers. Thats my guess

LackTrue4K4388d ago

yep!!! its like Microsoft was on N4G last week, taking notes on list of games?!

I mean, Killer Instinct, OUT OF NO WHERE?!?! that video looks cheap....i saw no depth in it?!

Qrphe4388d ago

PS4/Wii U/PC. All that work AAA devs have done on next-gen titles is going to look really awesome on PC games.

Belking4388d ago

Xbox-one easily. Cloud powered games for the future, dedicated servers, latest 3d camera technology, new and improved xbox live, MGS5, Titan Fall, Killer Instinct, Halo5, Forza 5, Quantum Break, Ryse, crimson Dragon,Dead rising 3, COD Ghosts,Minecraft, project spark, Sunset overdrive, The Witcher 3, Battlefield 4 and even more announcements coming later this year.

Xbox-one is looking strong.

keabrown794388d ago

The cloud will not power anything.. it doesn't work that way. MGS5, COD, The Witcher 3 and Battlefield 4 will all be on PS4. I've been a 360 fanboy all this gen and I have consistent internet connection. However with Microsoft becoming so anti-consumer I have to vote with my wallet.

Krosis4388d ago

You seem to know very little about cloud tech--an unsurprisingly neglected topic on this site. If it were a Sony-feature N4G would be all up high on how cool it is. *sigh*

yesmynameissumo4388d ago

@Krosis

You seem to know less. Cloud is a PR buzzword for distributed computing (something that has been around since 85). Why all this faith in the cloud and they've yet to SHOW you a single benefit?

spaceg0st4388d ago

@keabrown 100% agree and in the same position

denawayne4388d ago

@yesmynameissumo
You must not have heard what Forza is doing. It looked like Spark was utilizing the cloud too.

Krosis4388d ago

Think about it: MS has stated they will use Cloud to assist in graphical capability on consoles (several times). DO you realize if this was a lie or "PR buzz" that anyone who bought an Xbox One could successfully sue for false advertisement?

yesmynameissumo4388d ago (Edited 4388d ago )

Yeah, I heard about a "Drivatar". Show it, don't say it. Spark also spoke of this all powerful cloud and again...showed nothing. They are selling you on promises and potential. Remember Kinect scanning items in? Lie. Point being: It happens.

keabrown794388d ago

@Krosis cept for the fact that all this gen I've been a hard core 360 fan and only buying exclusives on PS3.

MysticStrummer4388d ago (Edited 4388d ago )

lol The "Drivatar" thing made me laugh. The "cloud" is not needed to do something like that.

But yeah Krosis, MS is using PR voodoo on you. Sony has talked about the same thing before, with the PS3. The internet infrastructure just doesn't exist yet to make the cloud work like MS is implying, and 300000 servers, real or virtual, are not going to change that.

http://www.eurogamer.net/ar...

If I buy any next-gen console it will be PS4, but my enthusiasm was greatly dampened by having to pay for online play. I know PS+ is a great value, but I'll have to give the matter a lot of thought between now and launch because it doesn't seem right to me. I would have been perfectly fine with Sony allowing basic online play for free but restricting all those PS4 social features to PS+ members. In my view that's what they should have done.

djsandman4388d ago

haha. Did you watch the microsoft presentation. About 50% of the developers said the online would use cloud to offload computations.. Everything is on dedicated servers. Denial that technology like that can exist is futile.

DigitalRaptor4388d ago (Edited 4388d ago )

Oh i get it now... the cloud... /s

If Microsoft would have built themselves a dedicated gaming machine, there'd be no need to "offload computations to the cloud".

But what does any of this mean, when you don't even own your games?

Belking4388d ago

"MGS5, COD, The Witcher 3 and Battlefield 4 will all be on PS4."

Who said they weren't on ps4? I just stated reasons why I think xbox-one will be the g to console of next gen. Ms is bringing the games. Fisrt party and third party this time. They'e aren't being anti consumer...lol Is sony being anti-consumer now that they are charging for online? Remember the saying that it should be free right?...lol

Nintendo Switch 2 sales shatters records, most-sold console in 24-hour period

The Nintendo Switch 2 has set a new record by selling over 3 million units within 24 hours, tripling the PlayStation 4’s previous launch day sales.

Crazy. Switch 2 is going to do very well.

darthv728d ago (Edited 8d ago )

No doubt, but.... the current price is out of the realm of the average parent / kid to buy like the SW1 was. So this launch achievement is from those of us with more disposable income.

The number of SW2 specific titles pales in comparison to the variety of SW1 games that get a performance boost right out of the box on this. And like the SX and PS5 before it, you can bet the majority are going to be using it as a means to better enjoy their existing titles that can benefit.

This may have been quick out of the gate... so was the WiiU. I quite enjoy it for what it is, but am keeping my expectations in check.

GenoPurpel8d ago (Edited 8d ago )

The Switch 2’s price point is great and fine and it’s still cheaper than the current gen of consoles aside from the Series S.

The only place I think they will fall short is their software sales, which also in turn may affect the hardware sales but not significantly. Parents will be fine paying for the system for their kids, but one look at an $80-$90 price tag for a single video game, that is where a lot of people will draw the line. Maybe not so much the people who are in the “willing to pay because I buy deluxe editions anyway” crowd, but for parents specifically, more sacrifices are gonna need to be made in their choices of gifts for their kids.

OtterX8d ago

As a parent of 3 with a very modest income, it was very affordable bc I already had an immense library of games, and the Mario Kart bundle came out to only about €50 more than a standard bundle. Both Zeldas were upgraded w Family Expansion Pass that I already had. Many games were upgraded for free. The only additional game I bought was Fast Fusion for 14.99 which was a great purchase!

Killer2020UK8d ago

People seem to forget that the Switch was $299 at launch which in today's money is roughly $400. That makes the Switch 2 a $50 increase when inflation is taken into account compared to the original.

Yes, people have less spending power on average compared to 2017 (Switch launch year) but this is not the MASSIVE price hike that people are making out Nintendo to be doing.

raWfodog8d ago

“No doubt, but.... the current price is out of the realm of the average parent / kid to buy like the SW1 was. So this launch achievement is from those of us with more disposable income.”

It could also be many people rushing to buy to avoid any possible tariff hikes in the future, but I think it’s still a good sign that many people still want physical consoles. Congrats to Nintendo! I’m not getting one at this time though (unless I get it for a Xmas present for one of my kids).

Congratulations Nintendo on finding the happy medium between their weak console and their invincible handheld plus learning from Sony and clearly defining the new console from the old unlike their Wii and Wii U just add a higher number simple yet effective 👍👍

victorMaje9d ago

Are people that keen on $90 games?
Is it true some remasters will also be $90?

DankSinatra8d ago

Tell me you don't research without telling me you don't research.

victorMaje8d ago

Nope. I didn’t research, I don’t own any Nintendo consoles and I had read on here something about $90 games on switch 2, so I guess it’s good now, people can calm down. Have a nice day :)

1nsomniac8d ago

I bought the Switch 2 I won’t be buying games at MK prices. I don’t ever pay over £45 for my games. Even my Nintendo switch exclusives I never paid more than £33 for.

franwex8d ago

I think the typo you put was meant to be $80.
Anyway, the answer to those questions seem to be yes.

victorMaje8d ago

Looks like I’ve been enlightened about the amount. Happy to see it’s not $90.

Sgt_Slaughter7d ago

Don't get your news from clickbait TikTokers/YouTubers, only go to the source (Nintendo) or reliable new outlets like IGN.

No game is $90 on the Switch 2, and they will never go there. Most games will be under $80, too.

cool
wasnt expecting it not to sell well

Profchaos9d ago

Its crazy that it's both the highest selling console on day 1 and people can walk into a store and buy it with no pre order

Ashunderfire868d ago

Yup while I was waiting in line from Best Buy for Switch 2, like I did for Switch 1 back in 2017, every waiting 12am was going to get a Switch 2! I was in the no preorder line too!

My friend manage to get 4 Switch 2s at his GameStop store, that was lowkey not busy at all. Got them all for himself and his family. Super easy to get a Switch 2 over PS5.

Profchaos8d ago

The struggle to get a ps5 was real had mates wait over 2 years for stock i got lucky and got it day 1 but still

Ashunderfire868d ago

I know and I also struggled getting a preorder for the PS5, when Walmart, Best Buy among other retailers open their preorders a day early before most of us realize it. I got my PS5 launch day thanks to YouTube Live Streamer Jake Randell. He helps people get preorders and launch consoles.

Neonridr7d ago

the PS5 also released during a global pandemic.

Ashunderfire867d ago

It’s funny how I got disagrees for speaking the truth for what I experienced getting the Switch 2. Nintendo had more copies of Switch 2 than Sony for the PS5.

Don’t be butthurt about this very fact. People on here disagreeing with crazy reasons lol

hiawa238d ago

Doesn't that mean Nintendo made sure they had plenty of stock available at retail.

Profchaos8d ago

Yeah it's nice to see they prepped for it

adamwparker8d ago

Yeah, I remember reading an article over two years ago with Nintendo stating that they were going to do all that they could to make sure their next console didn't have the PS5/XBox reseller swiping /no stock fiasco happen to them.

Looks like they made sure production met demand. Refreshing to see that the reseller thing didn't trend and I hope a lot of people who bought multiple units for the sole reason to resell then at $1000 are now stuck with them.

jznrpg8d ago

It also means there isn’t a chip shortage when PS5/Xbox came out during pandemic

gold_drake8d ago

to be where fair, we had a current gen come out during covid ha

repsahj8d ago (Edited 8d ago )

I remembered I tried 7 pre-order events during the PS5 launch. I gave up and ended up buying 1 from a scalper. But now, I already secured 1 pre-order Switch 2 unit in my country very easy and without problems.

Neonridr7d ago

kudos to Nintendo for ensuring a healthy amount of stock.

Activision Forces Adverts into Call of Duty Black Ops 6 and Warzone Loadouts

With the launch of Call of Duty Season 4, Activision quietly put adverts inside loadouts for Black Ops 6 and Warzone, sparking a backlash in the process.

lukasmain16d ago

Putting Ads in a pay-to-play Premium title? Well done Microsoft. Well done /s This is really scummy.

jjb198115d ago

This game will never change because these sweatlords love buying up all the skins and bundles that become obsolete the following year. They're the ones perpetuating Activision's greed.

VenomUK14d ago

If Microsoft introduces adverts into its other games I hope it can do them without disrupting the immersion of the game world. So for example in the new Fable game it would look out of place if there was a billboard advertising Cadillacs.

A far better way to do it would be to have a wizard conjure a 'dream cloud' in front of your character and then in the cloud you can see the Cadillac car and see the text with price and availability and hear a booming sales voice promoting the car. That would work so well as it wouldn't be a billboard and completely, 100%, fit in with your character's adventuring in Albion. Doesn't that sound so much better?!

crazyCoconuts14d ago

@venom, or how about our of 100 farts in Albion, 1 of them has a Cadillac pop out

VenomUK14d ago

@crazyCoconuts That’s undeniably off-beat - but it could really work!

Xbox's first-party handheld has been sidelined

Xbox's handheld ambitions continue unabated, but the focus is shifting towards improving Windows 11 for third-party handhelds — for now. The Xbox Series X 'Melrose' successor is safe, with development continuing at full pace.

Is there really a market for handhelds next to mobile?

Vits17d ago

If they run the same games as the main home console, then yeah, sure.
But if they need specially tailored games just for them? Probably not, unless there isn't a home console for comparison (see Switch).

RaidenBlack17d ago (Edited 17d ago )

I am kinda low-key happy this happened.
Dont want another Series S situation (games to be designed from 4 to 12TF scale and not 10 to 12TF).
Hope PS follows suit as well. Tablet SKU sharing with console for 10th gen, will just continue the cross gen -esque development/design phase/nature.
Want a proper 20+ only TF rasterized next-gen plz (+ frame-gen and the lot).
If anybody wants to continue the cross-gen, the Series S|X, PS5 will remain for that. And Switch 2, if you gotta go even lower in the TF range.

ABizzel117d ago

Yes and No. All of the PC handhelds combined have struggled to sell 7 million units, which would be a flop for any “console”. So the market is extremely niche because of price and target market (the informed hardcore gamer / casuals aren’t picking these up).

These handheld PCs are $500 or more, and offer at best Xbox Series S performance levels, so it’s best for MS specifically to just partner with ASUS, instead of investing millions if not billions.

Sony can make their own with custom AMD hardware due to their partnership, and stronger global brand for hardware. But even then it brings the question, of being a lower resolution PS5, and what does that mean for PS6 cross-gen (likely another generation where the first 3 - 4 years are just upgraded last-gen games).

Kosic17d ago

Imagine a Wii U style console, where the tablet doesn't rely on the console it's self, you download the game on the console under the TV and play in 4k glory, then you can remote play, get some unique game features if using both console and handheld in tandem. Then you can download the games in 720-1080p to play on the go, continue your progress, and continue on the TV when you get back.

Sony could get away with this due to exclusives, and that would be a reason for sales. Look at the portal.

I can picture seeing new hardware having some sort of GPU dock, where the handheld runs 1080p, and the dock has additional hardware to bring in 4k/60 specs.

I do think handheld gaming is going to be a strong future, imagine Nintendo release a new upgraded GPU dock for the Switch 3, every 2 years. More frames, sharper graphics on the same game for an extra £150 for a dock with a built in GPU chip. Console cycles doesn't have to be renewed, just the hardware can be improved by them reselling docks to us again and again with small/yearly upgrades like mobile phones.

GamerRN17d ago

Did you just imply that Sony can make a better stronger handheld than Microsoft? You do realize we are talking about Microsoft, the tech giant, right? If Microsoft can't make one that's cost effective, Sony definitely can't...

Brand and market share means nothing when you are a trillion dollar company

ABizzel116d ago

@GamerRN

It has nothing to do with what company can do it, or what company can spend.

For anyone taking a basic business class there is a term called ROI, and Xbox home consoles are selling at an all time low, meaning their ROI on a handheld is a risk that doesn’t make sense, even if they can afford it. Businesses are there to make money and it doesn’t make sene for MS to invest in a handheld that’s a companion device when their current home consoles they’ve spent 20 years working on are at an all time-low, when they can invest with little risk with what ASUS already has to offer.

This is why Sony can build a better device, because they have less risk involved, meaning they can invest more in their own product, and they already have an exclusive partnership with AMD on creating features and hardware. So in this specific case, YES Sony can built a better handheld, due to custom hardware, customer tools, low level APIs, compared to an off the shelf product running Windows or a Window Xbox kernel =.

Funny to see the alt already damage controlling and having a meltdown with multiple accounts in the comments already.

Sad for MS if true, a dedicated handheld would go down a lot better than a rog ally 2 with an Xbox sticker on it I think.

crazyCoconuts17d ago

It couldn't have succeeded for a number of reasons. Now they've retreated to the Windows front and trying to keep that relevant for gaming. How long before Windows Central realizes there won't be a real console successor to Series X either?

Lightning7717d ago

Except there is. That project is reportedly full speed ahead.

Outside_ofthe_Box17d ago

@Lighting77

So was the handheld until today...

Lightning7717d ago

@outside obviously not since they sidelined it and they wanna see how the Asus does. Are you saying they're gonna cancel the next console?

crazyCoconuts17d ago

@lightning - I'm admittedly trying to box you in here - Do you think the next Xbox console will have Steam on it?

Outside_ofthe_Box17d ago (Edited 17d ago )

@Lightning

Here we go with having to spell everything out.

If I told you yesterday that Xbox was going to sideline the handheld console what would your response have been? Probably something along the lines of "I doubt that since Phil has been talking about it for some time now"

My point is just because they are "full speed" ahead now does not mean that will not change in future. As we have seen with the handheld. Do you understand what I'm trying to say now?

Lightning7717d ago (Edited 17d ago )

Box me in? No you said the same thing you've always been saying for years now. Those are the rumors to have Steam integration.

What about it

If you told me they were gonna cancel it tomorrow it would nothing more than fanboy talking points. I only wait for credible sources not what someone else says.

Also this is the handheld not a full blown new console. The Asus is yet to release and they're waiting to see how that thing does. Critical thinking is my strong suit you should try it some time if you can. But Ok cool well you hang your hat on that I guess. Main New console is gonna get cancelled even though the handheld is a different marketing device than the main the console itself.

__y2jb17d ago

I think there is a 75% chance there will not be another Xbox. There is zero reason to buy one now. No way it can possibly sell more than 10m units after Xbox went third party.

BLow17d ago

That's what they do. Goalposts shift like the wind.

I'm really confused on why they are making a "first party" device and also have a Rog Ally with their sticker on it. Make this make sense. How is their own device going to be any different?

Your console doesn't sell and they expect a handheld to?

RaidenBlack17d ago (Edited 17d ago )

The Rog Ally one is gen agnostic ... as you deciphered, it was to be the updated Rog Ally but just with Xbox branding. PC handheld with some Xbox features.
The handheld Xbox is/was supposed to be sharing the same gen/ecosystem with the next-gen (10th gen) Xbox. Think Series S but handheld ... it'll run the Xbox OS or whatever the next Xbox will run.
...
As for anybody wondering/confused why MS is doing another Xbox console ... coz mainly its the 10th gen of home consoles next, which started wayy back in 1972 for the 1st gen. And MS wanna be part in it, in the 10th anniversary gen of consoles. If they gotta bow out, they can't do that at 9th i.e just before 10th. They wanna stick around till the 10th or the X-th gen and check what the fuss happens.

Outside_ofthe_Box17d ago

Curious as to what excuses the spam was saying. Because prior to this news, the Xbox handheld was used as proof that Xbox is still committed to the hardware space. This handheld being scraped is not a good sign...
