E3 2013: What we know and what to expect from the big three

Engadget: The annual game industry trade show that's spawned thousands of memes is just around the corner: E3 2013 kicks off on Monday morning with a quartet of press briefings. In another 72 hours, we'll have a full day of liveblogs for you that'll no doubt reveal much more about Microsoft's and Sony's intentions with the Xbox One and PlayStation 4, respectively, along with Nintendo's press not-so-much-a-conference event the following day addressing the Wii U.

Here, let me help everyone out.

What to expect: not much.

E3 has not been, is not, and never will be a "game changer" for any platform, and big killer app style game releases are seldom announced at trade shows.

Trade shows hold an immense, dangerous amount of power. I was losing faith in Vita last year. It had a weak showing at E3 and there was literally nothing to look forward to on the horizon. Then, in late summer, came Gamescom in Germany. I really had very little expectations for this conference, since Gamescom is about the size of E3's pinkie toe and there wasn't much hype for Vita going in.

But sneaky Sony blindsided me with a slew of Vita surprises. 'Tearaway', a game being developed by one of Sony's absolute best devs, Media Molecule, was announced. We were surprised to get a first look & details about 'Killzone: Mercenaries'. Also, it was announced that Insomniac's PS3 game 'Ratchet & Clank: Full Frontal Assault' would be coming to Vita. We even got a couple of major new programs that were chock full of games, with the PS Mobile and PS Plus coming to Vita.

Oh, the power of a trade show. With multiple major gaming sites teasing me that they've seen big things coming for Vita at this year's E3, how can I sleep?
