Sony still has a lot to prove at E3 2013

Despite Microsoft's messaging missteps of late, E3 won't be an easy win for Sony. Here's what it needs to communicate next week.

Sony has been in the console business for some time now. No company is perfect but what they provided past generations was amazing. Looking at this generation with all the AAA games released and the just released game The Last of Us and with Beyond Two Souls and GT6 fast approaching, along side of the release of the PS4 with games like Killzone Shadow Fall etc,..... The only time Sony ever fucked up on the video game side was the launch of the ps3 and the quickly turned that around. When you compare the playstation brand to other console brands, they have almost a flawless track record.

And really, was the PS3 launch screwed up? If you look at the numbers, even at it's high initial price point the PS3 was pretty much on par with the PS2 launch numbers for nearly two years, until the recession hit and that's where the two charts diverge. And at the same time, the PS2 was still selling. A lot of people tend to ignore that fact. When you consider Sony was moving two home consoles instead of one, even against both the Wii and 360, Sony moved the most home consoles with the the PS2/PS3 double whammy. People like to say that Nintendo came out on top in consoles sold, but who really sold the most home consoles in total when you factor in the PS2?

Sony already proved what they need to. Their focus on is squarely on the gamer. They just need to stick to that message as that's what gamers want, and they're the ones watching E3.

what is funny is how much of a reverse the beginning of last gen was.

MS started off being the hardcore gamers console. Sony was accused of having a system that was more of a media device(bluray, web browser, etc) and lacking in games.

Over time those roles swapped and this new gen is starting where they left off.

in my opinion sony only needs to do two things.

a. They need to make sure they don't run with any of the same sort of policies as MS with the xbone.

b. They need to come in at the right price point. If they come in cheaper and don't have all the restrictions on content and just continue to focus on games

Ok so lets use reality to see who needs to prove something. The last two year MS havent been pushing exclusive games and new ips just like the end of last gen. You still have to pay to play online. They show no gameplay during the reveal of xbone. Ever since its been bad decisions after bad decisions. Now we have this itunes wananabe that everyone hates and still no word on games. Negative rumor after negative rumor and most have been on point.

Sony has been on a roll. A new console coming out soon and still dropping exclusives left and right just like the end of the last gen and the previous. Not to mention seemingly everyday there is news of more games coming to all THREE platforms. Not to mention PS+ which is causing huge backlogs for gamers everywhere. The reveal show way better specs and gameplay from sequels and new ips plus already there are 5 f2p at launch! There is nothing but love from developers both big and dmall and the hardware is better.

I don't have an issue with the xbox 360 as I used to have one but its clear as day and the writing is on the wall.

Even if the ps4 implements some of the same things as the xbone it would still be the better console because of Sony.

When it comes to games by bet is on Sony.

Back to the topic, Sony does have a lot to prove. Them saying they will leave the used games and DRM up to publishers means the same issues are likely to be played out. On top of that Sony has already adopted their own form of DRM on the PS3, it's called online passes. Who's to say they don't expand that to the single player component as well?

They also have to prove what Gaikai means and if it will even be ready at launch. They also have to announce a price at some point. Will they continue to support Vita or will it just become a peripheral for the PS4? Will they show a bunch of games only to have a lot of them years away from ever coming out?

Just because they proved themselves already to you doesn't mean they have to the average consumer. We already seen all the excitement here on N4G about the Playstation Vita and look at how that transpired into real sales. We also keep seeing people salivate over PS3 exclusives and snub Call of Duty only to have PS3 owners actually do the opposite.

Yeah Sony has allot to prove and answer for. At least MS is making an effort to detail its policies I just don't like the 24 hour log in checks that right there is a huge deal breaker for anyone.

But at the same time I do commend MS for coming out with it unlike Sony that's simply allowing MS to twist in the wind and ducking and dogging the question its used game policies and some specific DRM features (if any).

I'm not worried about Sony in the offline department but in the used games department. They already issue a fee for its used games for first party so I'm worried if Sony will go into further stages of its policy.

I'm keeping a close eye on both but naturally, more so on MS.

Really did MS mention any of this during the reveal? It wasn't until rumors hit AFTER the reveal, and some MS employee opened his loud mouth on twitter about always online that they were forced to clarify, and yet still it is convoluted as all hell. Also it was timed before E3 so they can avoid it during the presentation. That is why they canceled the post E3 round table.

But lets be frank here. Even if Sony comes out and adopt some or more of these limitations, PS4 is still a more powerful well though out gaming machine and with Sony's track record, it will have the better games.

I think Sony will block used games if the publisher wants it, (EA) so you'll have to always be online. But if a publisher doesn't require their games to be blocked, then Sony won't require you to be online or block used games. But Microsoft would require it no matter what.

As far as we've seen so far Sony wouldn't even have to turn up & they'll still win.

Nintendo failed the moment they thought their beliefs were better than everybody else's & all they wanted to do was prove their own point that you don't need high spec hardware to enjoy your console. When in real life more so these days, that's actually not the case! So their not even turning up.

Now Microsoft has completely failed as they've proved their own agenda is the only thing that matters to them anymore & there consumers mean absolutely nothing what-so-ever to them. So their consumers are going to bite back hard, Xbone is going to be the biggest failure of this generation I predict as it has received nothing but hate since it was publicised. This is Sony's 4th console PS1 and PS2 both sold over a 100m. What other company has did this. The PS3 will certainly hit a 100m despite what the media thought.
