Top 10 Greatest Damn Video Games of All-Time

Since Mario hit our screens in 1985, there have been video games that bleed beauty and technical sophistication. This here is a list of the greatest damn games of all-time, one made up of games that have pushed the threshold of what can be considered art; and entertained us for hours, even years after release.

Now, this isn’t a list of your favorite games. Don’t get upset, just because your favorite isn’t on here. I already know you’re going to be upset, and I’m not going to apologize. Also, this is a celebration of games, so expect spoilers.

Alas, behold the greatest video games of all-time!

Um... games have been around before Super Mario Bros.

What pre-SMB game would you consider Top 10 all time?

There are plenty of games from the golden age of arcade gaming (1980-1985) that definitely should be in contention for a list such as this (all pre-Super Mario Bros). However, it also depends on what criteria you are using to make the decision. There are also computer and console games that could have been considered. The main thing for me is that while I could agree with certain decisions, a lot of the examples used for a series aren't probably the best representation of that series. Best Metal Gear being MGS3? Yes, I can agree with that. The best GTA is IV? I liked it a lot, but it isn't the best GTA. The best shooter of all time being RE4 *and* rated as the best game ever? No, I will not agree with that.

personally i like most of those games but hey its his opinion and while i do disagree with him by saying the best of all time, most of those are great games.

Obviously this list is an opinion, so there's no right or wrong...though let's be honest, TP doesn't deserve to be on there ^_^

The toughest part about trying to come up with a list like this is how do you judge it? Does a game's influence play a significant part? How much does nostalgia play into it? Are we trying to judge games based on how well they were received at the time and if they held up, because some classic films were considered mediocre at the time (Citizen Kane, Psycho, etc). Also, how can we compare a game from, let's say the NES era, to a game from this generation when today's games are infinitely more complex. Try to compare a Mario game to a Metal Gear Solid game, there's no possible way to do this.

I'd like to see a "semi-scientific" approach to try and come up with a list...of course that's still probably not possible and people would still be upset.

To me, I'd say Super Mario Bros. because without that game who knows when or if the video game industry would have recovered from the crash in '83 or what the industry would look like today.

Now, my favorite game is Baldur's Gate II: Shadows of Amn.

This is what I was saying with my first two comments, but I should have elaborated more.
