Games Don't Have To Be Fun

"In an effort to catch up in time for its sequel, I’ve been playing a healthy amount of Metro 2033 recently. For those reading who aren’t familiar with the series, it’s set in post-apocalyptic Russia, where the few survivors have flocked to the subway tunnels to escape the destruction and radiation. Most of the game takes place in these tunnels, with some infrequent and ill-advised trips to the surface."

Spec Ops: The Line, Bioshock, Journey, Nier, The Walking Dead... list goes on.

Not every game has to be "fun." In fact, sometimes it would be straight up weird. To say that those games are fun would be grossly inaccurate. Looking forward to the experience of playing a game and enjoying your time with it do not equal "fun" inherently. Not even close. Not every movie that you enjoy is "fun" and not every game that you enjoy is "fun."

Excellent viewing, very informative:

But those games are fun.

Tdmd4411d ago (Edited 4411d ago )

"Looking forward to the experience of playing a game and enjoying your time with it do not equal 'fun'."

"fun (fn)
n.
1. A source of enjoyment, amusement, or pleasure.
2. Enjoyment; amusement: have fun at the beach.
3. Playful, often noisy, activity."

The dictionary begs to differ.

Those games are engaging, which is much more important than being simply fun.

To use an example, imagine if someone had looked at Schindler's List and thought "This movie needs more fun in it!". We'd call them nucking futz, the movie was no less engaging because it wasn't a 'fun' movie.

knifefight4411d ago (Edited 4411d ago )

Dmd , dictionaries talk about one word with no context.

Context is an important part of understanding a language and the usage of words.

A sad movie where the main character has a hard life and dies at the end can often be "a source of enjoyment," but is noooooowhere near being fun. ;)

It takes a little bit more than one word with no context to get the concept here. Think bigger and you'll get it. Actually reading the article and watching the video would help too, but I don't expect you to do either of those, since this is N4G :/

Did you read the article? It's actually interesting. When I saw the title I thought the same thing as you, but after reading it, I quite agree with him.

Calm Down Sunshine4411d ago

Isn't particularly fun, but I was still compelled to play it.

pr0t0typeknuckles4411d ago

oh i see what hes saying, hes basically sying that gameplay doesnt have to be the best to make a game fun but a good story and cast can make up for it,and i have to agree,PoP08,walking dead, heck most point n clicks like phoenix wright,etc...

Jek_Porkins4411d ago

I think it's a mix of things, but the mechanics and game itself have to be fun and entertaining enough to keep peoples interest. If you look at The Walking Dead by Telltale Games, those game told excellent stories, but the actual gameplay elements were clunky at times, but most people just remember the great story.

GABRIEL10304411d ago

Dead Space 2 this game isn't fun it's very scary, a torment, but a great experience.

Tdmd4411d ago

If you play it because you want to - and actually enjoy your time with it, than it is fun, no matter how tense, scary, dark themed or slow paced it is. You are having fun with it on your own way, or else you'd be doing something else. Don't you think people have fun at scary movies? Adrenaline is fun. Be imersed in someone else's story is fun. I've always had a soft spot for horror games and movies - and I usually have a lot of fun with them.

Oh_Yeah4411d ago

For me, the gameplay has to be at least a little fun. That's why I was so glad to see a lot of wrpgs make their way onto consoles this gen...don't get me wrong I loved the concept of the older turn based rpgs, just not the gameplay..found it a bore/not challenging with the mindless combat watching battles play out for me..winning every one because I was bored enough to grind through countless enemy's to level up. When I first played Oblivion I was like omg I can actually play RPGS now instead of watching them! I was so excited.

The Netflix show was trash though…

That's not even a good template 😞 ugh this is gonna suck

Killer2020UK242d ago

What's gonna suck?

This is an opinion piece that has zero bearing on production of the hypothetical 12th installment of Tomb Raider.

Sciurus_vulgaris244d ago

The animated Netflix series is a sequel to Shadow of the Tomb Raider. Also, Netflix distributed this show, the company uses external production companies for most of its content. The show doesn’t provide a template for Crystal Dynamics [who was credited in production of the show], the Lara in the show is the one from the 2013 reboot series, and wasn’t reimagined for the show.

mastershredder243d ago (Edited 243d ago )

A perfect buleprint to be considered for awards you mean. Yeah, this will pander perfectly.

SimpleDad243d ago

If they want to lose money... sure, the blueprint is perfect.

Hayley Atwell says it would be a "dream" to play Lara Croft again

"To continue to be involved or to be involved in another way with [Lara Croft] would be an absolute dream and also a responsibility I would take seriously given how beloved and known she is…" the Marvel star tells GamesRadar+.

live-action Atwell? ... during early 2010s she would've nailed it ... but now ... dunno man

Nacho_Z243d ago

I know what you mean, but I wouldn't be opposed to seeing her play a slightly more mature version of the character. She's only 42 so still fine for all the action scenes.

Elantregaless243d ago

Get Brie Larsen to play new 'Lara Croft'

Elantregaless242d ago (Edited 242d ago )

Shh. Play along. Trust the plan.

aaronaton243d ago

The series is an abomination, and if she had anything about her, having read the script..... she should of declined.

cloganart243d ago

It sounds like you are just mad the show Lara's bosom is not as big as your triangle titty delusions.

Michiel1989243d ago

Lara is a fullblown lesbian crybaby in the anime, another character that was completely a ladies man has been made gay and is now her bff moral support, surely we only care about her tits instead of character development.

cloganart243d ago (Edited 243d ago )

@Michiel1989

All you chuds care about is sexuality and gender, it's hilarious. You've turned into the SJWs you've targeted and hated, getting triggered by anything and everything 🤣 https://i.imgur.com/dMBfwtF...

Michiel1989243d ago (Edited 243d ago )

Okay I didn't know that but what about the rest I said?....Lara was one of the strongest most badass protagonist in gaming and now she just cries half of the show. If that's a version of Lara that you want, more power to you, it's not for me.

and you care only about others caring about boobies. The only one who is talking about her tits is you my man. He said something about script and you started talking about her boobs.

The classical "you're just triggered" argument so you don't have to reply anything substantial and just say that, that's the sign of someone losing a discussion and not knowing what to say.

mastershredder243d ago

The most sickening part of all of this is not even that the IP is getting gutted not to be inclusive, it’s ONLY done so to be considered for awards and a funding for the next project. That’s it. It’s as pointless as a fortune 500 company virtue signaling during pride month. The bottom line is they will do the compliance dance and shell out anything to continue the cash flow, Just like the willing this VO actress people are fanning up to ^.

Also, who give a 7uck what the voice actress thinks or what she’s doing? This site is about games., not voice actors day dreams.
