PS4′s Share button was Sony Santa Monica’s idea

DualShock 4’s Share button was pitched to SCE bosses by Sony Santa Monica creative director Nathan Gary, Shuhei Yoshida has revealed.

As part of a far reaching interview on PS4’s creation – in which he also explained why Knack was revealed first at PlayStation Meeting – Sony’s president of Worldwide Studios recalled that the new pad’s headline social feature was pitched after months of discussion about PS4′s social features and implemented into the new DualShock design almost immediately.

“After the core hardware, the CPU and GPU, had been decided the project shifted to designing and discussing what should be the user experience of people who be playing games on PS4,” Yoshida told us. “So we formed the cross-functional groups of people from SCEI hardware group and Worldwide Studios and Sony network services teams to meet every month, almost. And Mark [Cerny] was heavily involved and leading some discussions. And the idea of sharing and seamless integration with social networks, that was heavily discussed.”

Thank you Santa Monica... That is pretty much the most exciting feature revealed about the PS4 for me personally.

Well then I guess a great developer makes great ideas. The SHARE button in my opinion is a smart idea. It would help gamers create a Youtube career and a smart idea for developers since other gamers can check out games before they buy so they can have an overall idea of what to buy.

I will be gladly being using this buton so I can finally start my Youtube channel. I think that this and the new DS4 features are the game changer. CANNOT WAIT TILL LAUNCH

HammadTheBeast2031d ago

Although Sony Santa Monica did pitch the idea, I'd say it was more gamers in general, if you look at forums and PS Blog and stuff, Playstation fans have been asking for this for a while now.

Great to see they're listening and bringing it in.

DragonKnight2031d ago

"It would help gamers create a Youtube career."

What I'm interested in is how the copyright claims would work now. I mean, with the share button and a direct Youtube link, it would be pretty counterproductive for any of the publishers to make copyright claims on game videos now with the Share button being so critical.

NeoTribe2031d ago

Nobodys making a youtube career with the share button lol. Plus theres enough garbage on youtube as it is, we dont need anymore.

RedSoakedSponge2031d ago

have they confirmed its connected with youtube? because when they revealed the share button, they didnt use youtube but some other video streaming service.

_QQ_2031d ago

oh god no, noone wants more shitty youtubers ranting about crap while showing COD gameplay.

Yup, by far the most brilliant feature of the ps4 and one that has been on my wishlist for quite some time.

I never thought anyone would go so far as incorporating it into the controller though. That goes to show how seriously Sony is taking this. It is also a very clever move.

I'm just hoping that it records the voices of other players too. Then I can probably sell my HD PVR (which will no doubt go down I'm value as a result of the feature :( )

Snookies122031d ago

That would be awesome if it recorded microphone audio when a headset is on, and it's saved to a separate track. That way you could include it or get rid of it.

nosferatuzodd2031d ago

I guarantee you that come June Microsoft is going to have and called it a different name peek maybe just watch

Septic2031d ago

Well, you never know, they could have been working on a similar feature before Sony. It's similar to how you could remotely turn on your console with your wireless controller this gen; who came up with that feature first? Difficult to say really.

But if MS dont have this feature, I'll be telling a lot of my close mates to buy the PS4 over the Xbox. Simply put, this feature is that important to us. It's why I spent a lot of money on a hd pvr.

BitbyDeath2031d ago

Brilliant thinking by Santa Monica. Hoping we get more options from it like the ability to save straight to your HDD (maybe it already does?)and sending to friends or even creating GIFs.

Bathyj2031d ago

One of the first things I thought of when I heard this is making instant gifs. If its not already in I'm sure they will add it.

I then want gif or short video clip support for animated wallpapers and theme creation, built straight into the PS4. People would spend hours customizing the look of the interface to make it their own.

shutUpAndTakeMyMoney2031d ago (Edited 2031d ago )

For me it was watching people play.

KaBaW2031d ago

Can someone explain to me what the button actually does?
Like, how do you use it and what's all the features?

Septic2031d ago (Edited 2031d ago )

You should watch the PS4 reveal if you have time. It goes into some detail as to how the feature works.

The share feature allows you to record any gameplay from any game. It's my understanding that the PS4 will always be recording the last 3 minutes of gameplay. So imagine if you pulled off an amazing shot, or some crazy one off event happened in a sandbox (or whatever you want to share really), this way, you can be sure that your moment I'd captured by the PS4.

Also, the feature takes sharing to another level. Like OnLive, you can actually watch your mates play. It's supposed to be very intuitive. You go to your friends list, check out your mate and watch him play any game.

Even better, the game also allows you to take control of someone else's game. So if you're stuck in a particular level for instance, not only can your mate give you advice as he watched your gameplay, he can assume control if you're struggling. What this means for competitive multiplayer games is that, if, for instance you're playing Mortal Kombat and someone is kicking your backside, if you're one of the few humans blessed with my presence on your friends list, you can let me assume direct control (Mass Effect reference intended) and obliterate the opponent. J/k lol but you get the idea.

To be honest you should go into YouTube and search for a video snippet about the feature. I would get it for you but my phone is about to run out of battery.

Studio-YaMi2031d ago

You can find what you want in this video. :)

Bathyj2031d ago

You typed all that on your phone?

Freedomland2031d ago

A new Share button on the controller will, when pressed, launch a new feature that will allow screenshots and video to be distributed online. The PS4 hardware will continually record the most recent 15 minutes of onscreen action (with no processing penalty, claims our source), which users will then be able to edit and broadcast via the Internet.

Septic2031d ago

Ha yes I did. I mostly always post from my phone. My battery doesn't last long though as you can imagine. And here's proof lol:

Stupid HTC ONE X. Never going with HTC again!

KaBaW2030d ago (Edited 2030d ago )

I watched it, but I did miss that part! D: I'll have to look into it.
When I asked though, I didn't have time to look, so I asked. ;)
But, thanks so much for all the information. It does sound exciting.

Also, thanks to everyone else who replied and not bein a jerk. ^_^

I wonder how Sony are going to combat the whole accidental spoiler thing?

I'm assuming this goes to both youtube and facebook, right?

fermcr2031d ago (Edited 2031d ago )

Agree with ijust2good.

For me this button is pointless. People are going to use it and abuse it at the beginning. It's just going to fill the crap out of YouTube with stupid videos... lot of spam... then after some time most people are going to get fed up with it, and stop using it.

If i get a PS4, it wont be because of the Share button.

garos822031d ago

Since when has you tube not been filled with stupid videos?

If it makes the average Joe able to record stuff his playing at the time then I see that as a good thing.I feel I can me more productive in betas reporting bugs for instance.
It's not a game changer but it certainly is a welcome addition

Qrphe2031d ago

Let's Play videos are fairly popular and are becoming even bigger. Although I dislike most of those people, I cannot argue it's a genius idea to appeal to that audience.

DivineAssault 2031d ago

Why are people disagreeing with you? All u said was "its my PERSONAL favorite feature." But anyway, yes.. I think its the most exciting built in feature along side the new vita functionality.. Remote play will be mirrored this time with no lag or separate apps running.. GREATNESS!!!

princejb1342031d ago

as much as i want the ps4
i dont really care about the sharing at this point
im very anti social so i see no reason for it

maybe ones i buy the ps4 and actually play around with it ill enjoy it

isarai2031d ago

For me it was the new more open market philosophy for indie devs. That is going to be huge for them

manjizz19952031d ago (Edited 2031d ago )

Snookies12 then you haven't researched the ps4 much have you.

miDnIghtEr20C_SfF2031d ago

Good to see people think that's the most exciting feature shown so far on the PS4. Been sharing on my 360 for a while now.

Snookies122030d ago

Oh really? The 360 can capture video of gameplay? I've had two 360's in the past, never knew...

jaymart2k2030d ago

Wii U has this feature too, only with pictures.

Hopefully in a future update it has video too.

Snookies122030d ago

The Vita and to a lesser extent the 3DS can take pictures as well in games. Video however is an entirely different matter.

Blackdeath_6632030d ago (Edited 2030d ago )

well i can sort of relate, what i found exciting is not so much the share button itself but the automatic video compression and decompression going on in the background and the dedicated chip for that. also the streaming possibilities as a result of that. the share button is just a neat feature which brings all these features together. personally my favourite feature is being able to switch off my ps4 at any time then continue exactly from where i left off next time i turn it on thanks to the low power state and the amount of ram

Snookies122030d ago

I'm honestly not really interested in it for "Let's Play" videos. However, being able to capture those (once in a lifetime) moments that can happen in games is very exciting for me. I've had so many amazing stories to tell my gaming friends in the past, but didn't have any recording device. Now I don't have to worry about it. Something crazy happens in a game, all I have to do is hit the button and it's saved. No more stories, now I can just show them.

Smartest addition...

Conzul2031d ago

Actually the "instant-on" power function is the smartest, since it attacks the immediacy of mobile-gaming rather head on.

k2d2030d ago (Edited 2030d ago )

+1 int. :D

Majin-vegeta2031d ago

They just wanna see our pix when we're gutting enemies in the next GOW :p.Hey i'm not complaining.

majiebeast2031d ago (Edited 2031d ago )

Yeah i think games like Journey and Unfinished swan wouldve been great shared experiences. So it isnt surprising this idea came from someone heavily involved with those 2 games. Kudo's to him though for coming up with it, its easily 1 of the best looking features of the PS4 so far.

So glad Sony has stopped using the SCEJ ivory tower approach of console development and has embraced a global approach.

Mark Cerny as PS4 lead is just pure genius he knows about all aspects of game development.

NastyLeftHook02031d ago

i can see it being used in the next god of war game, touchpad...
