Is Uncharted 2 The Most Influential Game Of The Generation?

Total Revue: For nearly every third person game that has been released post-Uncharted 2 and even third person games on the horizon, it seems they have all been influenced by Naughty Dog’s masterpiece in some ways. It’s made me question whether Uncharted 2 has been the generation’s most influential game.

Uncharted 2 might be one of the best of this gen, but I don't see other games being influenced by it. Maybe Tomb Raider. I dunno, I play many action games anyway so don't go by my judgement.

Thatguy-3104464d ago

In a way I think it has. It was one of the first few titles that brought the cinematic feel to video games that now most games have. However I believe that the most influential game of this Gen was CoD4. It basically set the standard for multiplayer which was the "it" factor this Gen.

TheFinalEpisode4464d ago

Completely agree. For better or for worse most games(even beyond the shooter genre) took cues from CoD4.

FATAL1TY4464d ago

★ Uncharted 2 is the best game this generation ★

silverbeld4464d ago (Edited 4464d ago )

Agreed, I do love Uncharted 2 a lot but the most influenced? Thats hard to say.

But COD 4 has the best moments and cinematic feel of all this gen.

When you crawling in the grass as a sniper and soldiers walking by with huge Tanks.

That moment alone is EPIC.

Best game this gen is COD4.

Not to mention the standard how the control scheme is being made for all shooters.

MysticStrummer4464d ago

Yeah when you see how many games have been ruined by being CoDified, CoD4 has to be the most influential game. It sucks but it's true.

omi25p4463d ago (Edited 4463d ago )

In no disrespect to Uncharted 2 its a brilliant game. Buts its not even close to being influential because it takes so much from other gamers i,e

Tomb raider
Gears of War

Id say Gears of War is the most influential game this generation.

It was the first game to really show off the graphics this generation. It showed you could do a gory dark shooter. Showed everyone how to do a cover system properly. (Just look how many games copy that)

Helped launch the current Xbox that had the smallest fanbase last gen right up to being one of the most bought entertainment items every year.

It was also the first game to really show off online gaming this generation and how good it could be. Well Gears and COD 2

We started seeing allot of explosions, games have become more cinematic after its release + allot of "OH shit!" moments. They are everywhere!

wait for the e3 demos to see what I mean. some recent example .. BF4.

Donnieboi4464d ago

Well, COD 4 could be to blame for all of these set piece moments too.

Twignberries4464d ago

If you look at the game from a blatant genre standpoint then no, it probably hasn't influenced that many games. But try to think of its core elements, and what made it so great and stand out above all other games. It's cinematic quality, fluidity and seemlessness between set piece moments and gameplay is something that was never done at that time, and probably still hasn't QUITE been matched today. Ever since it's release basically every AAA action game to come out has tried to emulate uncharted 2's mojo. How can you not see this?

showtimefolks4464d ago

people always say UC series is like indiana jones or tomb raider but none of those games ever got to the high quality of Uncharted series IMO. As good as old TR games were they were still not perfect in every sense

UC series is the reason why we got a TR reboot, and i know people will hate my comment. ND have set a standard for what story telling in cinematic action adventure game should be

MGS peace walker
Uncharted 2
MGS4
Yakuza 3
Infamous series
fallout 3

these are my top games of this gen

MysticStrummer4464d ago

That's a good list of games and everything, but the topic is "most influential".

Root4464d ago (Edited 4464d ago )

Tomb Raider....REALLY

Come on, it says "this generation". Tomb Raider Ledgends and Underworld were crap and Tomb Raider was basicaly Uncharted with a female lead without good voice acting and character development, good game however it was not Tomb Raider at heart

Nocturne1474463d ago

''Tomb Raider was basicaly Uncharted with a female lead without good voice acting and character development'' Seriously, what drugs you use ?

Don't think so, but I freaking love Uncharted. Not just Uncharted 2 either. 1,2,and 3 I love them all.

There my favorite games this gen. Just because I love the characters and the experience of Uncharted overall.

Only fitting I guess considering Crash Bandicoot 1,2, and 3 were my favorite PSX games. Unfortunately Jak was not my favorite on PS2 while I loved it that honor goes to Kingdom Hearts 1 an 2.

The Last of Us... just DAMN!

ape0074464d ago (Edited 4464d ago )

Call Of Duty 4, the time when CoD was GOLD

Double_Oh_Snap4464d ago

This for better or worse depending on which side you fall. For me Call of Duty 4 was amazing but I wish it never existed.

Sandmano4464d ago

I agreed with you but my best memories and best online experience this gen was with COD 2 such food times with that's games MP , COD 4 was Amazing but there's nothing like COD 2...

BlmThug4464d ago

Completely agree. Love it or hate it, CoD 4 did change gaming as we know it

BlaqMagiq244464d ago

I 1000% agree. If it made companies like Capcom have to switch up their priorities from RE fanbase to CoD fanbase and even Naughty Dog with UC3's multiplayer, you know it's had a big influence.

Morpheuzpr4464d ago

Yup it turned people who where looked down on for choosing videogames as their hobby into "Gamers" (hate that word). It made the industry believe that all a game needs to be successful is being noob friendly. Now every developer make their games thinking of the noobs instead of the real videogames aficionados that made this industry what it is.

ND took gameplay cinematics and dialogue to a whole new level. The dynamic levels such as the train level in U2 are amazing. Character interaction, development and dialogue really stand out in this game. It's obvious many devs took notes after U2 nabbed so many awards.

Irishguy954464d ago (Edited 4464d ago )

Yep, perfected Tps first. I dont' see how how Uncharted 2 is the most influential...who did it influence? It also came out mid way through the generation. Gears brought about the whole tps thing and online focus. Cod 2 also gets mention for the online kick off.

stage884464d ago

Gears was quite frankly boring and has a very clunky control scheme and physics.

Uncharted 2 deserves all the praise it gets. Eg most awards for a video game ever (over 200).

andibandit4464d ago

Gears actually has a good story altho it was told in a confusing way

MysticStrummer4464d ago

No to UC2, and no to Gears. Look how many games were ruined by an attempt to make them as popular as CoD and you have to admit CoD4 was the most influential game.

Uncharted 2 Is the Most Important PlayStation Exclusive of All Time

In a list of games that defined the PlayStation 3, Uncharted 2: Among Thieves would certainly be one of the top contenders. The blockbuster sequel to 2007’s Uncharted: Drake’s Fortune not only received critical acclaim and became a massive hit for Sony’s third console when it was released 15 years ago on October 13th, 2009, but it also cemented Naughty Dog’s future as a developer of cinematic, story-driven action-adventure games as opposed to its history of colorful platformers like Crash Bandicoot and Jak and Daxter from previous PlayStation generations. To this day, Uncharted 2 stands as one of the PS3’s best exclusives and one of the most important PlayStation games of all time.

gold_drake235d ago

it was pretty good. especially the multiplayer

KyRo235d ago

I loved this era on multiplayer games from Sony. People used to call the modes tacked on multiplayer but they were enjoyable. I loved Factions even more. I'm Still gutted that the second one isn't coming out.

-Foxtrot235d ago

Yeah, that one game where it not only has an amazing single player but the multiplayer was also just as good.

A fresh a breath air with it's more "skill focused, less is more" multiplayer in a time during COD fever where every other game with online was trying to be like it.

Shame NaughtyDog eventually did do COD like things with Uncharted 3 and 4, they ruined what made the original so good. It become an over the top arcade fest in the end.

Inverno235d ago

Ironic cause the MP was basically Halo, and Bungie helped on the technical side of things too. MP was more simple back then, I've said this before but I played U2 MP religiously. I sucked at it like you have no idea, but mah gawd did I have so much fun. Can't find an MP game that hooked me like U2s these days. Then Factions came along and while it had its problem I found new religion with it. Agh damn it why did they cancel Factions 2 bruhh.

gold_drake234d ago

i had so much fun too, played almost every night with mates or cousins baha

Relientk77235d ago

It is for sure my favorite game in the series. It's such a blast to play. The train levels still hold up and are fun as hell as well as the entire game.

RaidenBlack235d ago (Edited 235d ago )

Still remember the first gameplay video ... shooting the chasing truck and then the beautiful visuals & details whilst traversing the dilapidated Nepal streets ... perfection
Too bad Sony never ported the trilogy to PC ...

RaiderNation235d ago

I would argue it's God of War.

darthv72235d ago

I'll say, the PS3 really did sequels better than people give it credit for. Resistance 2, Uncharted 2, Motorstorm Pacific Rift, Infamous 2... all were better than their initial offerings and still hold up to this day.
