Games have become similar to most modern movies. Whether its Call of Duty or Crysis, most games now are more like a ride. Ten hours of entertainment without much thinking behind it. But every once in awhile, there is a game like Bioshock Infinite that completely reminds gamers on why we play games in the first place. Warning: some spoilers are contained in this piece.

Did you read the article? Bioshock Infinite is a game we should all play and support. Critics have been saying gaming is not a true art form. If you play and beat this game, all arguments of game not being "art" can be squashed.

Not a big fan of FPS.

Actually, not a fan of realtime or "realism" in a game either. Gritty and emotional drama. And that's all modern gaming has become. That and shooting things.

To call this game an FPS is truly a disservice to what this game actually is. This game is nothing like what "modern gaming" has become. It is a breath of fresh air in an industry full of corridor shooters and linear and simple story. This game is complex, it assumes its audience in intelligent and respects the player. I'm going to go ahead and assume you haven't played the game, because the way you're describing it couldn't be any further from the truth.

Any gamer who complains about stagnation in the games industry should buy this game. If you don't, I'm not sure what your argument is, because this is one of the only AAA games that actually took a creative risk and succeeded.

From Elizabeth, to the complexity in the story, to areas it touches on such as religion and race. This is art. There is no other way I can explain it.

I can understand not liking fps, but its still something every gamer should at least rent to play the first fifteen minutes. I'm not a big fan of museum art but I have definitely checked out the Mona Lisa. It may sound weird to compare Bioshock Infinite in a similar fashion, but it really is that important. The way it incorporates gameplay, storytelling, and morality has not been done in videogames before. Hopefully, this sets a new trend for next generation.

Hum I'm pretty sure gamers know about that from last year. Remember when indie games completely smashed triple A titles? Journey? TWD? Fez? Unfinished Swan? Hotline Miami? FTL?

As good as Bioshock is, you cant name it the masterpiece of this gen nor when/how videogames became art. Thats too subjective and besides that, there are so many good games out there for every kind of gamer nowadays. We are not in those times where there was 2-3 great, unmissable games a year. We know have 2-3 great, unmissable games a month!

But I value games that are meaningful to play, in which the experience goes beyond the act of play. Journey made me think about what I've played for weeks, and even now I discover new things from thinking about it.

Those are some good points made. You are right about there being a good game for every type of gamer nowadays. I have no doubt there are other masterpieces and I have no doubt that there are other games that could be define what art is. Art is subjective, it is what makes humans different. As far as we know, we are the only ones that can turn inanimate objects and look at it subjectively. Bioshock Infinite is special because it goes against what most critics have said about games. Robert Ebert for example said, "one obvious difference between art and games is that you can win a game. It has rules, points, objectives, and an outcome. Santiago might cite a immersive game without points or rules, but I would say then it ceases to be a game and becomes a representation of a story, a novel, a play, dance, a film." Those are things you cannot win; you can only experience them. In Bioshock Infinite, it may have a point/objective, but when you combine the ideas of quantum physics, the ending has an outcome but the variables are different . Next, Ebert says if there is not a point then its not a game. Wrong. The scene where you have a choice to throw a baseball is "art" because your own personal subjective thoughts on the matter affect your decision to throw, but the fact that you have the choice to throw it cannot be done in a book, movie, or painting. It could only be done in a game.

I preferred the first game because it was creepy and truly scary in parts. Infinite feels lacking in the horror department.
