San Francisco Rush Retrospective by Gaming on Sony

Modern Zorker writes, "Today in retro gaming, we celebrate the release of San Francisco Rush: Extreme Racing on Playstation. Come to think of it, “celebration” might be the wrong word here. So instead, today in retro gaming, we wish Climax Group had never ported this awesome arcade racer to home systems back in 1998. Proceed with caution."

I didn't even know this was on the PS1 back then, I played it on the N64 many years back and enjoyed it very much.

triverse4070d ago

It was easy to overlook on the PSOne where the racing/arcade genre was much more competitive than on the game starved N64 crowd.

Godchild10204070d ago (Edited 4070d ago )

I just looked it up and seen that it was released a year later on the PS1 (1998) after the release of the N64 (1997) version.

ambientFLIER4068d ago

That's because it was awful on the PS1.

I remember playing the sequel to this game on my dreamcast, which was San Francisco rush: 2049.
Wish someone would bring this franchise back for a modern console.

If you were playing San Francisco Rush on N64/PSX with the purpose of racing I think that you were doing it wrong. If you were just trying to launch yourself off of stationary objects and weird ditches you were having a ton of fun with it.

Hell, the Dreamcast sequel even had a stunt mode because of how many people were doing that stuff with the older game.

dumahim4069d ago

The original one had a stunt room.
It was a bit flawed though. It was hidden on a part of a track so you had to start a race to get to it. Doing loops and crazy jumps and stuff is all well and good until you mess up and crash. Then it'd warp you back to the race so you had to drive all the way back over to the hidden entrance. Kind of annoying.

So plenty of people were doing that sort of thing with the original.

ambientFLIER4068d ago

If you used the hidden cheat menu, you could respawn in place and turn the timer off. So you could mess around all you wanted...

Who owns the rights to this franchise these days? I would love to see an XBLA/PSN HD remake of Rush 2049 based on the arcade version. I dumped a lot of coins on that machine back in 1999/2000. Fantastic track design!

Shadow Man4069d ago

i remember playing the game in nintendo64 and always hated to have to replay from the beginning the same tacks to unlock the newer tracks bcs i didn't have a memory card. then i bout the ps1 version notice how bad it look compared to the n64 version. i was more amazed when i played the arcade at wal-mart, the graphic were truly amazing.

I would kill to have a Way of the Samurai game with a huge budget and modern tech... The first game was one of my greatest joys on PS2 back in the day. And I really hope From Software will do something with Tenchu... I hate that they're just sitting on the IP like it doesn't even exist.

Relientk7712d ago

Don't play with my feelings like that.

Also, new Tenchu please!

TheColbertinator12d ago

Tenchu would be superb in this day and age. Ninja and samurai games are hot right now and more is better.

Nope. Going back to the 32X as the reason Sega lost that generation doesn't go back far enough before the Saturn.

Sega executives need to blame themselves as to why Sega lost that generation. Not Saturn. Not 32X. Not Sega CD. Nope. Executives were the reason why. It wasn't the hardware. Those devices were either dropped early or released to soon resulting in a developer backlash the hurt the game catalog. They really shouldn't have been made at all because they should have planned their next move more carefully. It has nothing to do with the devices. Poor leadership decisions and lack of unity within the company are what happened.

Love how blame is always shifted away from what is the truth. Writing a book placing the blame on the 32X isn't the truth.

I am pretty sure there are documentaries (Youtube) around it which highlights these points. I had Sega Mega drive and NES growing up but that's about it. I didn't even know there was a war going on between these companies but I do remember thinking why I can't play Sonic cartridge on Nintendo or Mario on Sega :D

FinalFantasyFanatic13d ago

I had the Genesis and the Saturn, also had the SNES and 64, I never got a Dreamcast for some reason, but I never saw one in the stores either.
