RPGs Old and New - Iwata Asks Atlus about Etrian Odyssey IV

Yesterday, Etrian Odyssey IV was released in North America on the Nintendo 3DS. Greatly anticipating the game the night prior to release, I began translating an old (Iwata Asks) interview between Nintendo CEO Iwata Satoru, and Etrian Odyssey series' directors Komori Shigeo and Kanada Daisuke, about Etrian Odyssey IV, the series in its entirety, and RPGs in general. There's a lot of very interesting stuff here, so I'd recommend giving it a read if you're at all interested in game design or roleplaying games in particular.

I wish Iwata asked them why their so sluggish with their EU releases...

Canary4163d ago

I believe EU releases take longer in general because games A) have to make their way through the bureaucracies of more nations, and because the games themselves have to be translated in more languages.

In North America, for example, games, there's only the United States and Canada; English is the only language that games need to be translated in. Whearas in Europe, you've got a much more complicated landscape.

Neckbear4163d ago (Edited 4163d ago )

But let us not forget the most important of all reasons: Atlus doesn't have an european branch to handle distribution over there, so that's usually up to whichever european company wants to do it instead.

They have no offices there, it's a small company.

Great game, loving it so far.

Hydralysk4163d ago

This is the game that really makes me wish I had a 3DS, Etrian Odyssey is just infuriatingly entertaining.

Canary4163d ago

You should start working on getting one.

Especially if you're a fan of the prior games. I picked up a used copy of EO3 last weekend, and blasted through the first two stratums before EO4 came out... but ended up putting just as much time into the EO4 demo.

IV is just so much more polished and streamlined.

I really can't wait to see what they do with EO5.

This game is going to be awesome, but i'm not jelly. Its hard to be when you got Persona 4 Golden. When i get my 3DS definitely picking it up.

They should release it on NSO's GBA lineup. The Switch has a light sensor afterall! (Switch Lite owners would be out of luck though)

Chocoburger5d ago (Edited 5d ago )

I don't think games would be able to 'hook into' the light sensor for automatic screen brightness.
The best way to play the game is with the fan patch that lets you adjust the amount of light the game is receiving at will. Make sure not to play at max sunlight for too long, or the game will punish you, keep the sunlight meter lowered in order to keep playing longer.

A game starring a young Ganondorf... That would be kinda interesting

OtterX4d ago

Yea, maybe a story arc about how he becomes evil, but make him start out good/morally ambiguous.

Michiel19894d ago

nintendo and morally ambiguous is a dumpsterfire I'd like to watch.

DefaultComment5d ago

He already was playable in original Hyrule Warriors ... just saying.

Inverno4d ago

WW's Ganon would probably be the most interesting of the bunch. It'd be a good way to not only return to WW but also Ocarina. We could see more of his upbringing, his motivations for trying to find the sacred realm, the fallen timeline, the flood, and how he survived. Tho I don't think he'd work well game wise unless they're willing to let us kill Link. Otherwise it'd be a really good concept for an animated film.

SubtilizZer4d ago (Edited 4d ago )

Omg if they could literally make him follow Links path similarly like maybe he had to deliver the items Link had to recover in the legend of Zelda in hopes to save a loved one or maybe for some political gain or maybe his father is betrayed by Hyrule omg my brain so many ways to do this very thing and it would work so well.

Like his family is left in possession of powerful artifacts that can shape or deal with issues plaguing different parts of their world. Through politics they agree to part with these but then when they part with them they are betrayed or setup. I don’t know but this shit would slap.

It could star a relative and Ganon could be a child that he stops to visit on his journey who looks up to his like a Shanks and Luffy kind of deal. Seeing Ganon as a young kid with no hate wow. Nintendo sleeping on this for real

Kneetos4d ago

He was my MVP in the hyrule warriors game
Probably the most fun character to play as
