XBox Evolved: Gears of War 2 First Look

XBox Evolved writes: What is probably no surprise to most gamers; Epic Games and Microsoft have announced that Gears of War 2 will be coming exclusively to Xbox 360 November of this year. After the short trailer that is all over the net, Xbox Live, and now Xbox Evolved's YouTube, lead designer for the GoW series, Cliff Bleszinski stepped up to the stage at Game Developers Conference 2008 to make it completely official. Something else that was shown off besides GoW2 was an updated version of the Unreal Engine 3, the technology behind many games on Xbox 360 including Gears of War.

In the demo improvements to the water, lighting, flesh, and more were shown. Specifically what seems to be the entire buzz was a demo of a Locust horde with literally hundreds of Locust running around in game was demonstrated. This not only means that GoW2 will look good, but it will probably be one of the best, if not the best looking title on Xbox 360 when it hits.

That's not the Gears 1 tech demo.

It's a tech demo on the upgraded engine 'Unreal 3.5' labelled. Thus, effects not shown in Gears 1, which are used in Gears 2 in one form or another.

But I must say, the title is misleading. We've seen the tech demo already, so actually this is nothing new.

lol i was going to report the title but didnt bother because i knew it would get approved anyway. But they do make to good points. Highlights for the demo were not graphics because to be quite frank i didnt see any improvements. Any graphical enhancements require side by side view to tell differences simply were not enhanced enough imo. However the increased enemies on screen as well as the destructible environments were nice. Not too impressed with water this is next gen thats what is expected

GeoW2 will clearly do better sales than R2 due to its large dominant FPS fanbase on the xbox 360. And of course, you knew - NOT! - that the Ps3 ownership base is more broad with a variety of taste in genres or reason for having the console....reflected in sales.

But which game is the better shooter....have to see.

BTW. Since getting my xbox 360 I've spent more time completing R6LV and replaying Killzone than playing GeoW(which I still haven't finished yet). It's a good game but highly overrated.

But I am looking forward to GeoW2 as Epic will likely improve alot of things.

So for me Spring Rainbow 6 Vegas 2 & Frontlines (Which is actually one of the best Multiplayer experiences out there.

Summer: GTA IV (Need I say more?) Halo Wars ( I like RTS and Ensemble are good) And Ninja Gaiden 2 is scheduled for summer I think) Battlefield: Bad Company & Too Human. Oh and the Force Unleashed if the reviews are good.

Autumn : Fable 2 ( Officially the biggest time consuming game out there. Well other then WoW)

Winter: Gears 2 (Awwwww Yeah!) Call of Duty 5 and Bioware have said Mass Effect trilogy will coem out over the life of the 360 so a release thsi year would go with their time frame.

Yeah I've really got nothing to play! Oh I'm off to go play more Frontlines, Any games have 50 player multiplayer on the PS3? didn't think so and don't quote Resistance 2 as we havn't even seen a trailer for it yet.

My logic is also as skewed as yours... if we haven't seen a trailer we can't use a game as an example. Well my logic is slightly different, if we haven't seen any in-game, I say you can't quote the game, so the 360 list suddenly stumbles to about 2.

By the way Fable 2... a little bald English birdie with a monotonous voice told me it was only 10 hours long. That makes WoW virtually infinite. Then what are you going to do? Create a Ye Olde sitcom with your family in Fable 2, or become an interior designer on it? Hmmm, sounds time consuming, but not in a good way.

And I think we can all effectively laugh some of those exclusives off.. Halo Wars you won't actually buy that, Ninja Gaiden i don't advise buying it, but you might be feeling a bit left out by Summer.

but condemed was an awsome game. played it along time ago and was really surprised at how much I loved it. The finishing moves were great and hitting people with clubs is fun. Condemed 2 is the type of game for me where yo usay "woa its out already" but ill defiantly pick it up. The damage was nothing I haven't seen in Stranglehold, and it's good that they've caught up with Warhawk (use of Ambient Occlusion), but the Locust horde was a pretty weak showcase of animation and navigational AI. Sony already showcased sophisticated animation blending and navigational AI at E3 2006 for The Getaway, showing 570 high-poly characters with their own unique AI and unique animation. The Unreal Engine 3 presentation at GDC showed about 300 AI characters mindlessly walking into objects and then 'bouncing' off of them (and each other), as well as sharing the exact same animation cycle offset by a few frames.

Unreal Engine 3 just seems outdated at the moment, even with the improvements.

Traditional animation involves keyframing every single possible action, which is a lot of work, especially if an in-game character needs to, (for example) emote a specific expression while aiming at an object/enemy and jumping over obstacles.

Animation blending involves keyframing specific movements by body part/region: simply animate different facial expressions, different finger movements, leg movements, etc, and then allow the CPU to blend these together during gameplay. Blending takes a lot of CPU power though, depending on how specific the animators want to get.

The advantage is that you not only get in-game characters with far more realistic animation, but also less memory required to store animation data.

I applaud the Gears Team for the work they did on their first title and I will for the next title as well. Epic does good work and Cliffy has made them a horde of cash with Gears 1.

That said until we actually touch the game or at least see it - it will be hard to evaluate. Epic has made bombs in the past (though not in recent history) and like all developers they will make bombs in the future.

I hope Alan Wake comes out this year as for me thats the only game on the x360 that i`m looking forward to. Gears wasn`t that good for me, i never even finished the game. Gears, halo and resistance were a waste for me and i doubt Gears2 or Resistance2 will chanhge my mind. But COD4 does moer than enough to feel my time untill next real shooter comes out.

Killzone 1 was rated quite low. But the graphics looked really neat.

About Killzone 2. You talk about the graphics. Why not talk about the innovative first person cover system. Why not talk about the truly amazing looking hit detection system/animations?

And in my comment I said those titles had the potencial to do it, I didn't say they will do it.

I'm just stating that some 360 owners seem to like to focus their attention in just one game. Its either because they know the other games on the system aren't up to par with that game or because they feel a need to elect a game to make ppl believe all other games have to be compared to that specific game. Either ways, its a dumb thing to do.

In the end it will be just a matter of opinion. IMO, in 2007 the 360 had the best lineup of all consoles; in 2008, that 'title' will no doubt belong to the PS3. Again, its an opinion.

Fable 2 - and you talk about KZ2 having to look out because KZ1 was just 'average'? What about Fable 1?

Too Human - doesn't really impress me, but its a new IP, I'll give it the benefit of the doubt; maybe it can get to be as good as Mass Effect, although I doubt it

Ninja Gaiden 2 - looks good, but so did Sigma on the PS3; what is this one bringing to the table expect improved graphics and more blood?

Splinter Cell: Conviction - you get this, we get MGS4; I'll take MGS...but hey, thats probably just me (lol)

Left 4 Dead - hmmm, a zombie killing game...in first person...yay! btw, isn't it eventually coming out on the PS3?

GTAIV the most complete edition - now this one is funny: 360 fanboys seem to list this as its like a whole new game; honestly, I'm curious to see if this will really affect the games sales on the PS3 and how many ppl will pay to get the exclusive DLC that is coming to the 360 version

UT3 with the latest updates on the engine - and no mods, which is what keeps every UT game going on for so long....haha

Anyway, I never said that 360 has the best lineup of 2008. I personally think that PS3 has the best lineup. And I am so looking forward to MGS4 (since I have a PS3 too). Its just I don't see R2 or KZ2 beating Gears2. I also understand that I may be wrong but I was just talking based on facts (or majority of reviews).

Anyway, I am not a fanboy and I have all three nextgen consoles.

Also, hit detection system isn't areally new. Resident Evil 4 was the first to actually show off its hit detection system. MGS4 has really good animations as well. I doubt they would forget to include some nice hit detection in Gears 2.

And you shouldn't be too heated about people's comments. I mean, gaming shouldn't be your life, right? =D

Edit: Oh and Banjoo Kazooie was one of the best platformers on the N64. The first and second got really high ratings. It was made by Rare who is now owned by MS I think.

Gears and Resistance came out around the same time and was unfairly compared to each other since they're completely different. Gears of War shook the gaming world and was rewared with the majority of GOTY awards while Resistance was just another good shooter.

Splinter Cell is the best stealth game, PERIOD! MGS is a kids stealth game with laughable AI. Hi guys,

new to the site but been looking at comments and articles for months now.

I have recently ordered a ps3 and have a Wii and 360 already. I have mainly got the ps3 to use as a blue ray player/multimedia hub and to play some of the upcoming 1st party games starting with Gt prologue/unchartered.

Gears 1 was one of the games that has defined next generation so far and that is shown by how many awards it has won. I personally have spent a large amount of time playing it online/offline and still play it today even though i have COD4 and Halo.

Anyone that says that they don't want to play this game either does not like fps or our fanboy's that can't see past there console of choice. Face it all the consoles have reasons for purchasing. Right now for me 360 is the best gaming console but both the wii and ps3 have got some great games out or coming out.

I beleive Ps3 will eventually win the numbers war due to its multi purpose function and future proof disc format.But all consoles currently have a lot to offer as far as gaming is concerned and either way you will miss out by not owning one.

P.S i agree with First Knight and The Mart on the fact that Ps3 fans over hype resistance and killzone 2. Resistance is a good game but no genre definer like gears and as for kilzone i hope no 2 is a great game but the 1st was an average 1player game with a poor multiplayer tacked on.

Gears 2 sounds like it could be pretty darn good. I'm worried as to what they think was wrong with the multiplayer in the first and what they'll change. I really loved the multiplayer in the first and hope they don't change much, just give us some new maps & weapons and I'll be happy. New game types would be welcome, but I hope they keep the same game types from the original in the mix as well.

I'm glad they're making chainsaw battles. That was the most annoying thing about the original. Both of you have chainsaws revving at once, and it seems kind of random who actually gets the kill.

I just hope that the hype dies down a bit until we see some real footage. We haven't seen anything to get me excited yet, it's just the descriptions and the concept that are exciting. I hope we get to see the game in action soon, that'll throw this thing into the stratosphere for me.

GeoW2 will be an indication on whether or not the 360 has peaked yet. GeoW2 has a lot on its shoulders from fans, haters and the media. it's in good hands with Epic obviously, but we'll have to wait and see if it does what it does better than other games that will also have those features, which aren't necessarily new features and can be found in many games that are already out. but it will be a great game and will sell well. can't wait to see more on it.
