NVIDIA is continuing to be a partner for physics middleware on PlayStation 4

An opinions began to emerge, that NVIDIA PhysX SDK engine and PhysX Technology as a whole won’t find its place in the world of next-generation consoles and, thus, will be abandoned quickly.

Good to hear.

And it is possible to run PhysX off of the CPU. That is how you run it on AMD platforms.

forcefullpower4070d ago

I remember the demos for Physix before nvidia bought then. Made a huge difference but it was cpu intensive. Hopefully they may start licensing it out as it stop PC developers bothering to use it as ATI cards dont have it.

T9004070d ago (Edited 4070d ago )

@BrianG

"And it is possible to run PhysX off of the CPU."

Yes it is, but even a 6 core Intel Desktop CPU struggles at it. The CPU within the PS4 is a low end mobile CPU, there is no way it can handle the Physx effects the way GPU hardware can. Its simply because GPUs have hundreds of cores which just are more efficient at these sort of calculations.

@knight_crawler

Not being in the console industry by no means makes Nvidia Irrelevant. Infact its AMD whos near bankruptcy. Nvidia has been doing very well.

LocutusEstBorg4070d ago

There is nothing stopping them from implementing it via OpenCL or DirectX 11 Compute. Keeping it CUDA specific is a marketing gimmick.

Knight_Crawler4070d ago (Edited 4070d ago )

NVIDIA is slowly becoming irrelverent and they only thing that is saving them is that they have a huge contract with the USA army.

Edit: LOL dam spell check - whats the opposite word for relevant? I always thought it was irrelevant...does this word not exist in the english dictionary, I tried to Google it but get nothing.

Edit2: Ok now I am freaking out - I cannot find relevant in google as well :(

AKS4070d ago

Irreverent means disrespectful. I know what you meant, though. Just messing with you.

the_hitman30004070d ago

Yeah I'm kinda wondering if upgrade my pc gpu if I should go with AMD because I'm sure every console would be using them and more then likely be better ports or is that false?

mistertwoturbo4070d ago

Irrelevant is what you were looking for. You just had a typo. Irrelverent

ginsunuva4070d ago

Look up Tegra and Tesla. Then come back and talk.

Raider694070d ago (Edited 4070d ago )

You really dont know shit about nvidia !Do a search on the web and see how much they have invested in the new complex research centers that are in bond to open.

http://blogs.nvidia.com/201...

irrelevant that must be you m8!

Sircolby454070d ago

Nvidia irrelevant? I think you are confused. They are killing AMD in the GPU market. The only reason you keep seeing AMD in consoles is because they are cheap. AMD literally dropped the ball so bad that Nvidia was able to bump their midrange card up to the high end slot and charge the same price as the AMD high end card. Also their Tegra GPU is in a ton of mobile devices. AMD is the one that is QUICKLY becoming irrelevant. They are getting slaughtered in both the GPU and CPU market. Don't let the console wins fool you. Consoles alone can not keep AMD afloat if they don't get their act together. Personally I am pulling for AMD to get their act together because Nvidia and Intel are killing us in price because they have no competition. It is not even a close race anymore.

Grap4069d ago

AMD doing more than great in GPU they are no way near to be killed. i can't say that about their CPU. Intel doing better in gaming in general.

porkChop4070d ago

Except the CPU version of PhysX is horribly unoptimized and gimped.

But anyway, developers do not need Nvidia PhysX. There's this great thing called OpenCL. It does the exact same things as PhysX, except it's open source, free to use, and can be used on both AMD AND Nvidia GPUs.

Especially for multiplatform games, there is literally no reason for developers to choose PhysX over OpenCL when PhysX forces them to alienate half their fanbase on PC.

Nvidia PhysX is going to become completely irrelevant next gen. Anyone developing multiplatform engines will be supporting OpenCL, so they're not going to go out of their way to spend more money and resources to make their engines support PhysX when it offers virtually no difference or advantage.

Ju4070d ago (Edited 4070d ago )

PhysX = Physics simulation API
OpenCL = Open compute API

Not the same thing. Just FYI
(API = Application Programming Interface)

porkChop4070d ago

My point was that with OpenCL you can do everything that you can do with PhysX, and more. All PhysX does is allow you to run an extra set of physics simulations on the GPU instead of the CPU. With OpenCL you can use popular physics engines like Havok to do that exact same thing, on any modern GPU. Havok is already used in a vast amount of games anyway, and if developers don't want to use Havok they can use their own physics engines to do it. It's just a better solution all around compared to PhysX.

ATi_Elite4070d ago

Havok Physics runs off the CPU and is used differently than Nvidia's GPU Physics!

Havok is mostly large scale Physics, cars, walls, people, collisions, etc..

Nvidia is the Physics of every tiny little thing like curtains, particles, hair, clothes, etc..

If you think your gonna be playing a game and then bam have 1 million Havok Physics enable balls bouncing around your CRAZY, Your system is gonna jump up and give you the "International Choking Sign".

GPU Physics is the way to go for eye popping Physics Special effects on the fly as the GPU can pump that code out like it's nothing.

having the CPU do A.I., world Physics, blah blah blah and Particle Physics begins to be a Problem so Devs have come up with ways to offload Special Effects Physics to the GPU mostly through Nvidia Physx.

Aren't they also responsible for some of the technology that powers Gaikai's fast streaming service?

edit: found a link - http://www.nvidia.co.uk/obj...

It's a lot of support for a company that doesn't have any hardware in either of the new boxes, or do they, I could be wrong about this :S

N0S3LFESTEEM4070d ago

Only way I see this being relevant is if the 720 utilizes a dedicated physx processor... that would be one way of standing out.

The Pathless Console Exclusive to PlayStation 4

A brand new game from Annapurna has been announced at The Game Awards. It is from the creators of Abzu. The Pathless is a console exclusive to PlayStation 4

lxeasy1958d ago

Can't wait to play it on my PC, it looks really good

P_Bomb1958d ago

I could see it being a timed exclusive ala Edith Finch which Annapurna published for Giant Sparrow last year. Either way, they seem to have a good relationship with Sony if they’re doing it again. Giant Squid’s working on it too and Abzu was free on Plus last year.

HOLY SH!TBALLS!!

i want it so hard

Playstation 4 E3 Leaked Titles, Fallout 76 Skewedcast

This week Gareth, Michael, and Justin at Skewed and Reviewed look at the reveal of Fallout 76. They also discuss the leaked PS4 titles from the pending E3 showcase and discuss Dark Souls: Remastered and PAX West tickets going on sale as well as no theatrical presentation at E3 for Black Ops IIII.

Dark souls remastered 3:25
Fallout 76 6:30
Sony E3 leaks –
Additional game rumors 19:47

john4162144d ago

I’m so torn on fallout 76 I would love another game similar to new Vegas but it doesn’t sound like it. At the same time it’s fallout and I’ll wanna play it either way but I may skip it if it is going the way of what the “leaks” are saying.I’m just hoping it ends up being more new Vegas style than what these “leaks” are saying.

Garethvk2144d ago

I think it is safe to say it will likely not be like the others. Free to play has been kicked around but likely an online aspect.

--bienio--2144d ago

If it’s online I will skip this:( sadly

Garethvk2144d ago

I think it will be key in what they do with it. Free to play online only is one thing but a game that allows co-op and team play has potential.

kneon2144d ago

@Garethvk

I see lots of opportunity for some kind of co-op game. You could have a team build a settlement, scavenge the wasteland for resources and then defend against waves of attackers.

showtimefolks2143d ago

It's not online because Bethesda current engine won't allow deep online modes

It might have some online aspects but I don't see a online only fallout game

Lighter92144d ago

Let's just wait until E3 until we make a judgement call. It's a week from now. One of the leaks I heard was ghoul-elephants that escaped from a zoo. They can't all be real.

Bobafret2144d ago

Dang, and I was interested in ghoul elephants.

CurbStompin2144d ago

This is a fallout survival game.

-Foxtrot2144d ago

Bethesda - "SavePlayer1"

***6 Months Later***

Bethesda - "Online Fallout"

Whut???

joab7772144d ago

It’s a service game. Look at the money ESO is making. Why make another ES right now? It will be some type of survival mmo of sorts is my guess.

3-4-52143d ago

I've never played a fallout game but I've known of them since the 90's. Always kind of interested me but never enough to play.

I actually am interested in this one.

Cmv382144d ago

Not sure why people are so opposed to multiplayer fallout, I think it's a great universe to co op in . Now if it's PvP functionality, not so much. plus it doesn't sound like this replaces the existence of a fallout 5 down the road, and I wouldn't doubt if another developer is working on a new Vegas line spin off. Let's just breathe, and see how this turns out.

Garethvk2144d ago

I would like a multiplayer version.

getbacktogaming2144d ago

A traditionally single player franchise is releasing a new game this time with a multiplayer focus... It doesn't matter what Bethesda does in the future; right now a bunch of people are naturally feeling disappointed.

Cmv382144d ago

I hate change as Much as the next person, and yes single player games matter, but if this industry doesn't have diversity and franchises door change things up every now and then things become stagnant and die off.

getbacktogaming2144d ago

Fallout has plenty of room to evolve as a single player... Bethesda just wants a piece of the multiplayer pie.

OneLove2144d ago

People need to get over it. It seems like a spin off and it's just the Sony fans mad that multiplayer is the real money maker.

IndieFolk2144d ago

Yeah, because "people" were totally expecting a sequel that soon. /s

They just made something "people" were not waiting for, then if "people" aren't interested in it, they should just skip it and wait for Fallout 5 within 5 years as they were doing before Bethesda announced 76. SMH.

IamTylerDurden12144d ago (Edited 2144d ago )

I'd rather a New Vegas style game than an ESO "Fallout" edition. If they want a mp Fallout why not do New Vegas 2 but with drop in/out co op? Make a Fallout side story like New Vegas, but with co op similar to Borderlands.

Fallout does indeed have an interesting world, but so did Elder Scrolls. Do we really want Fallout turned into a f2p, MT ridden style game?

Cmv382144d ago (Edited 2144d ago )

And that idea sounds great, that could be similar to what's going on here. My point is people are panicking at the very thought of multiplayer. Let's condemn if bad not based solely pin multiplayer.

KwietStorm_BLM2144d ago

People are opposed to multiplayer anything. There are some gamers who strangely despise anything online related, and there are some gamers who say single player games aren't worth the money. For some reason it seems more and more rare to find people who just enjoy both, on the internet anyway.

DerekTweed2143d ago

No friends to play online with?

(Not you. The people who hate multiplayer)

Garethvk2144d ago

That is what so much is focused on now. You have game that are designed as eSports first in their design priority.

Gwiz2144d ago

That and streaming,it's the ultimate advertising.Just look at sports and advertising in general.

Garethvk2144d ago

So true. You have all sorts of talking head celebs popping up who do not even play the games just talk about them.

FinalFantasyFanatic2144d ago

But how many of these games are competitive enough to be eSports? If I remember right, Dissidia NT wanted a piece of that pie and it kinda flopped. Even newer games like Street Fighter aren't as balanced as they should be for competitive play. People can stream for the sheer spectacle which I'm fine with (especially single-player games), but it's hard work and alot of time to get a game down pat for the purpose of making it an esport.

cfc832144d ago

I though a fallout MP would be impossible ?

Garethvk2144d ago

We will see in a week but it will be interesting.

FinalFantasyFanatic2144d ago

I can see it working best as a co-op like Monster Hunter, not sure how PvP would work without frustrating players though.

Tobse2144d ago

Make Fallout like rust and see how they climb in the Top 10 steam Charts

No it doesn't! It's still a technical marvel and it's narrative and themes are great! Most are having a blast with it and really there's just a very small minority that is upset with it!

terstomp2150d ago

Enjoyed the game, the story, the attention to detail and the music. Very immersive indeed.
(Reminder, slavery/exploitation knows no colour.)

TheOttomatic912150d ago

Uh there wasn’t really any thematic concern at all.

Lightning Mr Bubbles2150d ago

79% on metacritic is a travesty. I know the type of game it is not for everyone and some crazy reviews gave it 4/10. But anyone who enjoys story in games knows this is one of best games of the year so far, if not the best.

I beat the game and I already miss the characters, I know it's an open ended game but I wish they would find a way to make a sequel.
