Xcom: Enemy Unknown Review - Eskimo Press

Xcom: Enemy Unknown is a turn based sci-fi strategy game from Firaxis games, the studio that brought us Civilization. Utilizing a style of game play that may be seen as outdated in the modern video game scene, is Xcom relevant, and more importantly, is it any good?

9.5 is a worthy score for this game because Xcom EU is a fantastic reboot for the series.

Good review, I agree with most of what you said about the game.

yes, it's a fantastic game, I really hope they make another one. It's one of those games that when you think of a sequel you instantly have dozens of ideas of what can be done.

My sentiments exactly. I also think it's awesome that a game like this stands its ground and catches people's attention in an age where shooters seem to be the only thing many people play

Maybe i will try this on steams next sale.

I really liked the demo for this game even though my time with it was cut short. I need to play it once more when I get the time.

I really enjoyed the demo for Xcom and just got done beating Fire Emblem: Awakening for 3DS, which played really similar. They're just different genres (sci-fi vs fantasy). Hah. Great review too! I'll have to pick this one up the next time I want great sic-fi. Crysis 3 just isn't doing it for me.

Good game, core gameplay of original X-COM with lot of improvements and nice graphics. I'm also glad that devs kept turn based combat. However I thought that it lacked a bit in variety of weapons and craft types. They will possibly fill holes with DLC later...

XCOM: Enemy Unknown - A Welcome Rebirth

XCOM: Enemy Unknown rebooted the series back in 2012, and has since inspired numerous new strategy game series to be born.

If someone gets into this I'd recommend getting the enemy within version. It's got all the dlc included so it's the better version. Wish the author would've atleast mentioned it. I didn't see it.

Fantastic game though. Xcom 2 is top notch also. I've spent countless hours in these games.

Excellent game.
Played to death on PS3 years ago.

What other games were inspired by this game?

Gears Of War Tactics, Phoenix Point. Many others.

shinoff2183598d ago

Phoenix point if I remember was created by the original xcom developer or something to that affect. I did try gears tactics some months ago and I just couldn't get into it. It's probably just me

It was, but it was really closer to the newer XCOM than the older ones. Gears Tactics was okay but was hard to get into knowing there probably wont be a sequel.

Ten Best Tactical Mobile Games

There are few things more gratifying in gaming than skillfully turning the tide of a conflict. And few genres provide as many opportunities to abruptly reverse the odds via skill and forethought as tactical strategy. To be sure, we are more often than not talking about turn-based tactical mobile games, specifically titles in line with the iconic landmark series (XCOM and Jagged Alliance) that made the genre a genre.
